Dekhi Sabho Ne Farwa Ke

Keeping screen awake…

aye joh lainey ijaazat sheh say qasim jang kee

Qasim (as) came to take permission from Husayn (as) to fight in battle.

haath may shabir kay shabbar ki woh tehreer dee

In Husayn's (as) hand, he placed the letter from Hassan (as) [Qasim's father].

jis may likha tha kay aye bhai wasiyat hai mere

In it, Hassan (as) had written, "Oh brother, this is my will for you."

ayega woh rooz thi jiski khabar nana nay dee

"The day will come that our grandfather, [Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)], foretold."

hum nahi hongay magar dil may tamana hai meray

"We may not be there, but it is my heartfelt wish…"

mere janib say mera qasim hasan ban kar laray

"That my Qasim (as) fights as Hassan (as) in my place."

deekhi sabhoo nay farwa kay gul pehrahan ki jang

Everyone watched Farwa's [Qasim's (as) mother] flower-clad son fight.

qasim ki jang may thi imam e hasan ki jang

Qasim's (as) battle was the battle of Imam Hassan (as).

hairan hain loog deekh kay tashna dahan ki jang

People were astonished watching the fight of this parched young man.

kya khoob rang lae hai ek suf shikan ki jang

What a vivid display of battle by this line-breaking warrior!

faujon ko bhagtay hi bani karzaar say

The enemy armies could only flee from the battlefield.

bachta nahi tha koi bhi qasim kay waar say

No one escaped Qasim's (as) blows.

karbobala ki jang may johar deekha diye

In the battle of Karbala, he displayed his true essence.

iss teen din ki pyaas pay mehshar utha diye

Despite three days of thirst, he wreaked havoc like the Day of Judgment.

tunha tha par hazaron kay lashkar bhaga diye

He was alone, yet he made thousands of soldiers flee.

nami girami loog thikanay laga diye

He brought down even the most renowned warriors.

fauj e uddo nay bheja hai ek bud shiyaar ko

The enemy army sent a shrewd warrior.

shayad yehi fatha say badal dayway haar ko

Perhaps he could turn their defeat into victory.

arzaq kay charon beton ko mara larai may

Qasim (as) killed Arzaq's four sons in battle.

arzaq ka sir bhi tan say uttara larai may

He also separated Arzaq's head from his body in battle.

abb thak gaya hasan ka dulara larai may

Now Hassan's (as) beloved son grew tired in battle.

pyasay ko mil saka na sahara larai may

The thirsty one could find no support in the fight.

charon taraf say zulm shiyaron may ghir gaya

He was surrounded on all sides by oppressors.

tanha hasan ka laal hazaron may ghir gaya

Hassan's (as) lone son was engulfed by thousands.

talwar o teer o naiza o khnajar chalatay hain

Swords, arrows, spears, and daggers were wielded.

joh thori door hai woohi pathar uthatay hain

Those a little further away picked up stones.

bhagay hoey thay dour joh abb pass atay hain

Those who had fled from afar now drew near.

zakhmi ko ghair ghair kay taighain lagatay hain

They encircled the wounded one, striking him with swords.

qasim nay dee sada mere ammo

Qasim (as) cried out, "Oh my uncle!"

main dushmano may ghir gaya mola

"I am surrounded by enemies, oh Master!"

maqtal may itni taizi say poochay shah e umam

Husayn (as) rushed into the battlefield with such speed…

bhagi joh fouj e shaam tou yeh hogay situm

When the army of Shaam fled, these atrocities occurred.

ghoron ki tapain parti raheen sir say ta qadam

The horses' hooves relentlessly trampled him from head to toe.

nikla hai mushkilon say bohat nojawan ka dum

The young man's breath left him with great difficulty.

qasim ki lash ghoro say pamaal ho gayi

Qasim's (as) body was trampled by horses.

itna lahoo baha kay zamee lal ho gayi

So much blood flowed that the earth turned crimson.

ghatri may mola lay chalay tukroo ko dall kay

Husayn (as) carried the pieces [of Qasim's body] in a bundle.

qasim ki laash khaimay may lae sambhal kay

He carefully brought Qasim's (as) body to the tent.

dou lafz ma say keh na sakay yeh mallal kay

[Qasim (as)] could not say two words of sorrow to his mother.

shabir sooch may rahay uss khush jamal kay

Husayn (as) remained lost in thought of that handsome youth.

jan day kay jis wada e baba wafa kiya

Who, by giving his life, fulfilled his father's promise.

khaimay may maa nay shukr ka sajda adda kiya

In the tent, his mother performed a prostration of gratitude.

kohraam mach gaya bara matam hoa waha

A great uproar erupted, and much mourning took place there.

dard o aalam say madar e qasim hai neem jaa

With pain and grief, Qasim's (as) mother was half-alive.

kitni hai dard naak yeh maqtal ki dasta

How agonizing is this story of the battlefield!

himat hai itni kis may joh yeh kar sakay baya

Who has the courage to narrate it fully?

nohay ko yon farough diyey ja rahay hain hum

This is how we are propagating this elegy.

parcham ghum ka khoob kiyey ja rahay hain hum

We are raising the banner of grief with great fervor.
