Baba joon dardet be joonam (farsi)
Added 2026-07-04 by Abbas P.
Ze sharāre-ye gham misoozam be tamāmiy-e vojood
Dobāreh bāyad bekhoonam: yeki bood, yeki nabood
Bolboli goosheh-ye viroone mikhoone barāye yār
Ba'd-e moddat-hā kenār-e bābā gerefte gharār
Tamām-e ranj-e safar ro barāye yār dāre mige
Az gham-e bacheh-hā vo amme dāre harf mizane
I am burning, consumed by the sparks of grief, my whole being is aflame!
Once again, I have to sing: "Once there was, and once there wasn't…"
A nightingale in a desolate ruin sings for her beloved.
After so long, she has finally found peace beside her Father.
All the hardships of the journey, she recounts them to her beloved.
She speaks of the grief of the children and of her aunt Zaynab (as).
Bābājoon, dardet be joonam
Oh dear Father, may my soul bear your pain!
Bābājoon khosh oomadi, be manzel-e faghiroone
Biyā beshin, beshno dard-e del-e yatimoone
Bābājoon khosh oomadi, ghorboon-e khāk-e ghadamet
Be Khodā delam misookht, rafti safar, nadidamet
Vaghti rafti, doshmanā ātish zadan be kheyme-hā
Barā-ye khāter-e chi zadan kotak be bacheh-hā?
Oh dear Father, welcome to this humble dwelling [of ours]!
Come, sit down, and hear the heartache of your orphaned child!
Oh dear Father, welcome! I sacrifice myself for the dust of your feet!
By God, my heart ached so much when you left on your journey and I didn't see you!
After you left, the enemies set fire to our tents!
Why did they beat the children? For what reason?
Bābājoon beyn-e hame, amma-mo oonā kheyli zadan
Bābājoon mano bebin, be sooratam sili zadan
Oh dear Father, among everyone, they beat my aunt (Zaynab (as)) so much!
Oh dear Father, look at me! They slapped my face!
Bābājoon, dardet be joonam
Oh dear Father, may my soul bear your pain!
Har ki sooratam ro dide, mige chon Zahrā shode
Soorat-e mādar-e to ākhe mage chetor shode
Bābājoon, dādāsh Ali ro be kojā bordi, bābā?
Bacheh-hā migan oono pish-e Khodā bordi, bābā
Bābājoon, behem begoo bar sar-e to chi oomade
Dādāsham Ali-ye Akbar barā-ye chi nayoomade
Whoever sees my face says I've become like Zahra (as)!
But Father, what happened to your mother's (Fatima (as)'s) face [to make them say that]?
Oh dear Father, where did you take my brother Ali (Asghar (as))?
The children say you took him to be with God, oh Father.
Oh dear Father, tell me what happened to you!
Why hasn't my brother Ali Akbar (as) returned?
Man nemifahmam bābā, ba'ziyā be ham chi migan
Hame behem migan yatim — bābā, yatim be ki migan?
Mage har ki ke bābāsh rafte safar, yatim mishe?
Yā yatim ooni ke too kharābe-hā moghim mishe?
Injā bā zakhm-e zaboon ātish be del-hā mizanan
Injā rasm-e-shoon bade: bacheh-ye yatim-o mizanan
I don't understand, Father, what some people are saying to each other.
Everyone calls me an orphan. Father, who do they call an orphan?
Is everyone an orphan whose father has gone on a journey?
Or is an orphan someone who lives in ruins?
Here, with wounds of the tongue, they set hearts on fire!
Here, their custom is cruel: they beat the orphaned child!
Ze sharāre-ye gham misoozam be tamāmiy-e vojood
Dobāreh bāyad bekhoonam: yeki bood, yeki nabood
Bābājoon, dardet be joonam
Bolboli goosheh-ye viroone mikhoone barāye yār
Ba'd-e moddat-hā kenār-e bābā gerefte gharār
Tamām-e ranj-e safar ro barāye yār dāre mige
Az gham-e bacheh-hā vo amme dāre harf mizane
