بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
40:1
حمٓ ١
Ha-meem
QaraiHa, Meem.
Saheeh InternationalḤā, Meem.
-
40:2
تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ ٢
Tanzeelu alkitabi mina AllahialAAazeezi alAAaleem
QaraiThe [gradual] sending down of the Book is from Allah, the All-mighty, the All-knowing,
Saheeh InternationalThe revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,
-
40:3
غَافِرِ ٱلذَّنۢبِ وَقَابِلِ ٱلتَّوْبِ شَدِيدِ ٱلْعِقَابِ ذِى ٱلطَّوْلِ ۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ إِلَيْهِ ٱلْمَصِيرُ ٣
Ghafiri aththanbi waqabiliattawbi shadeedi alAAiqabi thee attawlila ilaha illa huwa ilayhi almaseer
Qaraiforgiver of sins and acceptor of repentance, severe in retribution, [yet] all-bountiful; there is no god except Him, [and] toward Him is the destination.
Saheeh InternationalThe forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.

40:4
مَا يُجَٰدِلُ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَلَا يَغْرُرْكَ تَقَلُّبُهُمْ فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ ٤
Ma yujadilu fee ayatiAllahi illa allatheena kafaroo falayaghrurka taqallubuhum fee albilad
QaraiNo one disputes the signs of Allah except the faithless. So do not be misled by their bustle in the towns.
Saheeh InternationalNo one disputes concerning the signs of Allāh except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land.

40:5
كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَٱلْأَحْزَابُ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ ۖ وَهَمَّتْ كُلُّ أُمَّةٍۭ بِرَسُولِهِمْ لِيَأْخُذُوهُ ۖ وَجَٰدَلُوا۟ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا۟ بِهِ ٱلْحَقَّ فَأَخَذْتُهُمْ ۖ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ ٥
Kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohinwal-ahzabu min baAAdihim wahammat kulluommatin birasoolihim liya/khuthoohu wajadaloo bilbatililiyudhidoo bihi alhaqqa faakhathtuhumfakayfa kana AAiqab
QaraiThe people of Noah denied before them and the [heathen] factions [who came] after them. Every nation attempted to lay hands on their apostle, and disputed erroneously to refute the truth. Then I seized them; so how was My retribution?!
Saheeh InternationalThe people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
-
40:6
وَكَذَٰلِكَ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ٦
Wakathalika haqqat kalimaturabbika AAala allatheena kafaroo annahum as-habuannar
QaraiThat is how the word of your Lord became due concerning the faithless, that they shall be inmates of the Fire.
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire.

40:7
ٱلَّذِينَ يَحْمِلُونَ ٱلْعَرْشَ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُۥ يُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَيُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ رَبَّنَا وَسِعْتَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ رَّحْمَةً وَعِلْمًا فَٱغْفِرْ لِلَّذِينَ تَابُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ سَبِيلَكَ وَقِهِمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ٧
Allatheena yahmiloona alAAarshawaman hawlahu yusabbihoona bihamdi rabbihimwayu/minoona bihi wayastaghfiroona lillatheena amanoorabbana wasiAAta kulla shay-in rahmatan waAAilmanfaghfir lillatheena taboo wattabaAAoosabeelaka waqihim AAathaba aljaheem
QaraiThose who bear the Throne, and those who are around it, celebrate the praise of their Lord and have faith in Him, and they plead for forgiveness for the faithful: ‘Our Lord! You embrace all things in mercy and knowledge. So forgive those who repent and follow Your way and save them from the punishment of hell.
Saheeh InternationalThose [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], "Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.

40:8
رَبَّنَا وَأَدْخِلْهُمْ جَنَّٰتِ عَدْنٍ ٱلَّتِى وَعَدتَّهُمْ وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنْ ءَابَآئِهِمْ وَأَزْوَٰجِهِمْ وَذُرِّيَّٰتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٨
Rabbana waadkhilhum jannatiAAadnin allatee waAAadtahum waman salaha min aba-ihimwaazwajihim wathurriyyatihim innaka antaalAAazeezu alhakeem
QaraiOur Lord! Admit them into the Gardens of Eden, which You have promised them, along with whoever is righteous among their forebears, their spouses and their descendants. Indeed You are the All-mighty, the All-wise.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

40:9
وَقِهِمُ ٱلسَّئَِّاتِ ۚ وَمَن تَقِ ٱلسَّئَِّاتِ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَقَدْ رَحِمْتَهُۥ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ٩
Waqihimu assayyi-ati wamantaqi assayyi-ati yawma-ithin faqad rahimtahuwathalika huwa alfawzu alAAatheem
QaraiSave them from the ills [of the Day of Retribution]; and whomever You save from the ills that day, You will have had mercy upon him, and that is the great triumph.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day - You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment."

40:10
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُنَادَوْنَ لَمَقْتُ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ مِن مَّقْتِكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ إِذْ تُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلْإِيمَٰنِ فَتَكْفُرُونَ ١٠
Inna allatheena kafaroo yunadawnalamaqtu Allahi akbaru min maqtikum anfusakum ithtudAAawna ila al-eemani fatakfuroon
QaraiIt will be proclaimed to the faithless: ‘Surely, Allah’s outrage [towards you] is greater than your outrage towards yourselves, as you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allāh for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]."

40:11
قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ أَمَتَّنَا ٱثْنَتَيْنِ وَأَحْيَيْتَنَا ٱثْنَتَيْنِ فَٱعْتَرَفْنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا فَهَلْ إِلَىٰ خُرُوجٍ مِّن سَبِيلٍ ١١
Qaloo rabbana amattanaithnatayni waahyaytana ithnatayni faAAtarafnabithunoobina fahal ila khuroojin min sabeel
QaraiThey will say, ‘Our Lord! Twice did You make us die, and twice did You give us life. We admit our sins. Is there any way out [from this plight]?’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"

40:12
ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّهُۥٓ إِذَا دُعِىَ ٱللَّهُ وَحْدَهُۥ كَفَرْتُمْ ۖ وَإِن يُشْرَكْ بِهِۦ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ ۚ فَٱلْحُكْمُ لِلَّهِ ٱلْعَلِىِّ ٱلْكَبِيرِ ١٢
Thalikum bi-annahu ithaduAAiya Allahu wahdahu kafartum wa-in yushrak bihitu/minoo falhukmu lillahi alAAaliyyialkabeer
Qarai[They will be told,] ‘This [plight of yours] is because, when Allah was invoked alone, you would disbelieve, but if partners were ascribed to Him you would believe. So the judgment belongs to Allah, the All-exalted, the All-great.’
Saheeh International[They will be told], "That is because, when Allāh was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allāh, the Most High, the Grand."

40:13
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُرِيكُمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَيُنَزِّلُ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقًا ۚ وَمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ إِلَّا مَن يُنِيبُ ١٣
Huwa allathee yureekum ayatihiwayunazzilu lakum mina assama-i rizqan wamayatathakkaru illa man yuneeb
QaraiIt is He who shows you His signs and sends down provision for you from the sky. Yet no one takes admonition except those who return penitently [to Allah].
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].
-
40:14
فَٱدْعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ ١٤
FadAAoo Allaha mukhliseenalahu addeena walaw kariha alkafiroon
QaraiSo supplicate Allah, putting exclusive faith in Him, though the faithless should be averse.
Saheeh InternationalSo invoke Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.
-
40:15
رَفِيعُ ٱلدَّرَجَٰتِ ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ يُلْقِى ٱلرُّوحَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ لِيُنذِرَ يَوْمَ ٱلتَّلَاقِ ١٥
RafeeAAu addarajati thooalAAarshi yulqee arrooha min amrihi AAalaman yashao min AAibadihi liyunthira yawma attalaq
QaraiRaiser of ranks, Lord of the Throne, He casts the Spirit of His command upon whomever of His servants that He wishes, that he may warn [people] of the Day of Encounter.
Saheeh International[He is] the Exalted above [all] degrees, Owner of the Throne; He places the inspiration of His command [i.e., revelation] upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting.
-
40:16
يَوْمَ هُم بَٰرِزُونَ ۖ لَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مِنْهُمْ شَىْءٌ ۚ لِّمَنِ ٱلْمُلْكُ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ لِلَّهِ ٱلْوَٰحِدِ ٱلْقَهَّارِ ١٦
Yawma hum barizoona la yakhfaAAala Allahi minhum shay-on limani almulku alyawmalillahi alwahidi alqahhar
QaraiThe day when they will emerge [from their graves], nothing about them will be hidden from Allah. ‘To whom does the sovereignty belong today?’ ‘To Allah, the One, the All-paramount!’
Saheeh InternationalThe Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allāh. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.
-
40:17
ٱلْيَوْمَ تُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ ۚ لَا ظُلْمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ ١٧
Alyawma tujza kullu nafsin bimakasabat la thulma alyawma inna AllahasareeAAu alhisab
Qarai‘Today every soul shall be requited for what it has earned. There will be no injustice today. Indeed Allah is swift at reckoning.’
Saheeh InternationalThis Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
-
40:18
وَأَنذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلَْٔازِفَةِ إِذِ ٱلْقُلُوبُ لَدَى ٱلْحَنَاجِرِ كَٰظِمِينَ ۚ مَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ وَلَا شَفِيعٍ يُطَاعُ ١٨
Waanthirhum yawma al-azifati ithialquloobu lada alhanajiri kathimeenama liththalimeena min hameeminwala shafeeAAin yutaAA
QaraiWarn them of the Approaching Day, when the hearts will be at the throats, choking with suppressed agony, [and] the wrongdoers will have no sympathizer, nor any intercessor who might be heard.
Saheeh InternationalAnd warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
-
40:19
يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِى ٱلصُّدُورُ ١٩
YaAAlamu kha-inata al-aAAyuni wamatukhfee assudoor
QaraiHe knows the treachery of the eyes, and what the breasts hide.
Saheeh InternationalHe knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.
-
40:20
وَٱللَّهُ يَقْضِى بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا يَقْضُونَ بِشَىْءٍ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ ٢٠
Wallahu yaqdee bilhaqqiwallatheena yadAAoona min doonihi la yaqdoonabishay-in inna Allaha huwa assameeAAu albaseer
QaraiAllah judges with justice, while those whom they invoke besides Him do not judge by anything. Indeed it is Allah who is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh judges with truth, while those they invoke besides Him judge not with anything. Indeed, Allāh - He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

40:21
۞ أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَءَاثَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٍ ٢١
Awa lam yaseeroo fee al-ardi fayanthurookayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena kanoomin qablihim kanoo hum ashadda minhum quwwatan waatharanfee al-ardi faakhathahumu Allahu bithunoobihimwama kana lahum mina Allahi min waq
QaraiHave they not travelled through the land so that they may observe how was the fate of those who were before them? They were greater than them in might and with respect to the effects [they left] in the land. But then Allah seized them for their sins, and they had no defender against Allah [’s punishment].
Saheeh InternationalHave they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allāh seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allāh any protector.
-
40:22
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانَت تَّأْتِيهِمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَكَفَرُوا۟ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ قَوِىٌّ شَدِيدُ ٱلْعِقَابِ ٢٢
Thalika bi-annahum kanatta/teehim rusuluhum bilbayyinati fakafaroo faakhathahumuAllahu innahu qawiyyun shadeedu alAAiqab
QaraiThat was because their apostles used to bring them manifest proofs, but they defied [them]. So Allah seized them. Indeed He is all-strong, severe in retribution.
Saheeh InternationalThat was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allāh seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.
-
40:23
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ بَِٔايَٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ ٢٣
Walaqad arsalna moosa bi-ayatinawasultanin mubeen
QaraiCertainly We sent Moses with Our signs and a manifest authority
Saheeh InternationalAnd We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority
-
40:24
إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَهَٰمَٰنَ وَقَٰرُونَ فَقَالُوا۟ سَٰحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ ٢٤
Ila firAAawna wahamanawaqaroona faqaloo sahirun kaththab
Qaraito Pharaoh, Haman and Korah, but they said, ‘A magician and a mendacious liar.’
Saheeh InternationalTo Pharaoh, Hāmān and Qārūn, but they said, "[He is] a magician and a liar."
-
40:25
فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ مِنْ عِندِنَا قَالُوا۟ ٱقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَبْنَآءَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ وَٱسْتَحْيُوا۟ نِسَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَمَا كَيْدُ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ إِلَّا فِى ضَلَٰلٍ ٢٥
Falamma jaahum bilhaqqimin AAindina qaloo oqtuloo abnaa allatheenaamanoo maAAahu wastahyoo nisaahumwama kaydu alkafireena illa fee dalal
QaraiSo when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, ‘Kill the sons of the faithful who are with him, and spare their women.’ But the stratagems of the faithless only go awry.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, "Kill the sons of those who have believed with him and keep their women alive." But the plan of the disbelievers is not except in error.

40:26
وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ذَرُونِىٓ أَقْتُلْ مُوسَىٰ وَلْيَدْعُ رَبَّهُۥٓ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يُبَدِّلَ دِينَكُمْ أَوْ أَن يُظْهِرَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلْفَسَادَ ٢٦
Waqala firAAawnu tharooneeaqtul moosa walyadAAu rabbahu innee akhafu anyubaddila deenakum aw an yuthhira fee al-ardialfasad
QaraiAnd Pharaoh said, ‘Let me slay Moses, and let him invoke his Lord. Indeed I fear that he will change your religion, or bring forth corruption in our land.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or that he will cause corruption in the land."
-
40:27
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُم مِّن كُلِّ مُتَكَبِّرٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ ٢٧
Waqala moosa innee AAuthtubirabbee warabbikum min kulli mutakabbirin la yu/minubiyawmi alhisab
QaraiMoses said, ‘I seek the protection of my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.’
Saheeh InternationalBut Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account."
-
40:28
وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مُّؤْمِنٌ مِّنْ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَكْتُمُ إِيمَٰنَهُۥٓ أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّىَ ٱللَّهُ وَقَدْ جَآءَكُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَكُ كَٰذِبًا فَعَلَيْهِ كَذِبُهُۥ ۖ وَإِن يَكُ صَادِقًا يُصِبْكُم بَعْضُ ٱلَّذِى يَعِدُكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى مَنْ هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ كَذَّابٌ ٢٨
Waqala rajulun mu/minun min alifirAAawna yaktumu eemanahu ataqtuloona rajulan an yaqoolarabbiyya Allahu waqad jaakum bilbayyinatimin rabbikum wa-in yaku kathiban faAAalayhi kathibuhuwa-in yaku sadiqan yusibkum baAAdu allatheeyaAAidukum inna Allaha la yahdee man huwa musrifunkaththab
QaraiSaid a man of faith from Pharaoh’s clan, who concealed his faith, ‘Will you kill a man for saying, ‘‘My Lord is Allah,’’ while he has already brought you manifest proofs from your Lord? Should he be lying, his falsehood will be to his own detriment; but if he is truthful, there shall visit you some of what he promises you. Indeed Allah does not guide someone who is a transgressor and liar.
Saheeh InternationalAnd a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allāh' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allāh does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.

40:29
يَٰقَوْمِ لَكُمُ ٱلْمُلْكُ ٱلْيَوْمَ ظَٰهِرِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَمَن يَنصُرُنَا مِنۢ بَأْسِ ٱللَّهِ إِن جَآءَنَا ۚ قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ مَآ أُرِيكُمْ إِلَّا مَآ أَرَىٰ وَمَآ أَهْدِيكُمْ إِلَّا سَبِيلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ٢٩
Ya qawmi lakumu almulku alyawma thahireenafee al-ardi faman yansuruna min ba/si Allahiin jaana qala firAAawnu ma oreekumilla ma ara wama ahdeekum illasabeela arrashad
QaraiO my people! Today sovereignty belongs to you, and you are dominant in the land. But who will save us from Allah’s punishment should it overtake us?’ Pharaoh said, ‘I just point out to you what I see [to be advisable for you], and I guide you only to the way of rectitude.’
Saheeh InternationalO my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allāh if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."

40:30
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوْمِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُم مِّثْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ ٣٠
Waqala allathee amana yaqawmi innee akhafu AAalaykum mithla yawmi al-ahzab
QaraiHe who had faith said, ‘O my people! Indeed I fear for you [a day] like the day of the [heathen] factions;
Saheeh InternationalAnd he who believed said, "O my people, indeed I fear for you [a fate] like the day of the companies -
-
40:31
مِثْلَ دَأْبِ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ ۚ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلْمًا لِّلْعِبَادِ ٣١
Mithla da/bi qawmi noohin waAAadinwathamooda wallatheena min baAAdihim wamaAllahu yureedu thulman lilAAibad
Qarailike the case of the people of Noah, of Ad and Thamud, and those who came after them, and Allah does not desire any wrong for [His] servants.
Saheeh InternationalLike the custom of the people of Noah and of ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them. And Allāh wants no injustice for [His] servants.
-
40:32
وَيَٰقَوْمِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلتَّنَادِ ٣٢
Waya qawmi innee akhafuAAalaykum yawma attanad
QaraiO my people! I fear for you a day of mutual distress calls,
Saheeh InternationalAnd O my people, indeed I fear for you the Day of Calling -
-
40:33
يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ۗ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنْ هَادٍ ٣٣
Yawma tuwalloona mudbireena ma lakummina Allahi min AAasimin waman yudlili Allahufama lahu min had
Qaraia day when you will turn back [to flee], not having anyone to protect you from Allah, and whomever Allah leads astray has no guide.
Saheeh InternationalThe Day you will turn your backs fleeing; there is not for you from Allāh any protector. And whoever Allāh sends astray - there is not for him any guide.
-
40:34
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبْلُ بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَمَا زِلْتُمْ فِى شَكٍّ مِّمَّا جَآءَكُم بِهِۦ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلْتُمْ لَن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ رَسُولًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَنْ هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ مُّرْتَابٌ ٣٤
Walaqad jaakum yoosufu min qablu bilbayyinatifama ziltum fee shakkin mimma jaakum bihi hattaitha halaka qultum lan yabAAatha Allahu minbaAAdihi rasoolan kathalika yudillu Allahuman huwa musrifun murtab
QaraiCertainly Joseph brought you manifest proofs earlier, but you continued to remain in doubt concerning what he had brought you. When he died, you said, ‘‘Allah will never send any apostle after him.’’ That is how Allah leads astray those who are unrestrained and skeptical.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allāh send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allāh leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."

40:35
ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۖ كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلْبِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ جَبَّارٍ ٣٥
Allatheena yujadiloona fee ayatiAllahi bighayri sultanin atahum kaburamaqtan AAinda Allahi waAAinda allatheena amanookathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAala kulliqalbi mutakabbirin jabbar
QaraiThose who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority that may have come to them—[that is] greatly outrageous to Allah and to those who have faith. That is how Allah seals the heart of every arrogant tyrant.’
Saheeh InternationalThose who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without an authority having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allāh and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allāh seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.
-
40:36
وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ يَٰهَٰمَٰنُ ٱبْنِ لِى صَرْحًا لَّعَلِّىٓ أَبْلُغُ ٱلْأَسْبَٰبَ ٣٦
Waqala firAAawnu ya hamanuibni lee sarhan laAAallee ablughu al-asbab
QaraiPharaoh said, ‘O Haman! Build me a tower so that I may reach the routes
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh said, "O Hāmān, construct for me a tower that I might reach the ways -
-
40:37
أَسْبَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ فَأَطَّلِعَ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّى لَأَظُنُّهُۥ كَٰذِبًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِفِرْعَوْنَ سُوٓءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَصُدَّ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۚ وَمَا كَيْدُ فِرْعَوْنَ إِلَّا فِى تَبَابٍ ٣٧
Asbaba assamawatifaattaliAAa ila ilahi moosa wa-inneelaathunnuhu kathiban wakathalikazuyyina lifirAAawna soo-o AAamalihi wasudda AAani assabeeliwama kaydu firAAawna illa fee tabab
Qarai—the routes of the heavens—and take a look at the God of Moses, and indeed I consider him a liar.’ The evil of his conduct was thus presented as decorous to Pharaoh, and he was kept from the way [of Allah]. Pharaoh’s stratagems only led him into ruin.
Saheeh InternationalThe ways into the heavens - so that I may look at the deity of Moses; but indeed, I think he is a liar." And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin.
-
40:38
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوْمِ ٱتَّبِعُونِ أَهْدِكُمْ سَبِيلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ٣٨
Waqala allathee amana yaqawmi ittabiAAooni ahdikum sabeela arrashad
QaraiAnd he who had faith said, ‘O my people! Follow me; I will guide you to the way of rectitude.
Saheeh InternationalAnd he who believed said, "O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the way of right conduct.
-
40:39
يَٰقَوْمِ إِنَّمَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا مَتَٰعٌ وَإِنَّ ٱلَْٔاخِرَةَ هِىَ دَارُ ٱلْقَرَارِ ٣٩
Ya qawmi innama hathihialhayatu addunya mataAAunwa-inna al-akhirata hiya daru alqarar
QaraiO my people! This life of the world is only a [passing] enjoyment, and indeed the Hereafter is the abiding home.
Saheeh InternationalO my people, this worldly life is only [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter - that is the home of [permanent] settlement.
-
40:40
مَنْ عَمِلَ سَيِّئَةً فَلَا يُجْزَىٰٓ إِلَّا مِثْلَهَا ۖ وَمَنْ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحًا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ يُرْزَقُونَ فِيهَا بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ٤٠
Man AAamila sayyi-atan fala yujzailla mithlaha waman AAamila salihanmin thakarin aw ontha wahuwa mu/minun faola-ikayadkhuloona aljannata yurzaqoona feeha bighayri hisab
QaraiWhoever commits a misdeed shall not be requited except with its like, but whoever acts righteously, whether male or female, should he be faithful—such shall enter paradise, and they will be provided therein without any reckoning.
Saheeh InternationalWhoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by the like thereof; but whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - those will enter Paradise, being given provision therein without account.

40:41
۞ وَيَٰقَوْمِ مَا لِىٓ أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَى ٱلنَّجَوٰةِ وَتَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ ٤١
Waya qawmi malee adAAookum ilaannajati watadAAoonanee ila annar
QaraiO my people! [Think,] what makes me invite you to deliverance, while you invite me toward the Fire?
Saheeh InternationalAnd O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?
-
40:42
تَدْعُونَنِى لِأَكْفُرَ بِٱللَّهِ وَأُشْرِكَ بِهِۦ مَا لَيْسَ لِى بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَأَنَا۠ أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْغَفَّٰرِ ٤٢
TadAAoonanee li-akfura billahiwaoshrika bihi ma laysa lee bihi AAilmun waanaadAAookum ila alAAazeezi alghaffar
QaraiYou invite me to defy Allah and to ascribe to Him partners of which I have no knowledge, while I call you to the All-mighty, the All-forgiver.
Saheeh InternationalYou invite me to disbelieve in Allāh and associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
-
40:43
لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّمَا تَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَعْوَةٌ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَلَا فِى ٱلَْٔاخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ مَرَدَّنَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ٤٣
La jarama annama tadAAoonaneeilayhi laysa lahu daAAwatun fee addunya walafee al-akhirati waanna maraddana ila Allahiwaanna almusrifeena hum as-habu annar
QaraiUndoubtedly, that to which you invite me has no invitation in the world nor in the Hereafter, and indeed our return will be to Allah, and indeed it is the transgressors who will be inmates of the Fire.
Saheeh InternationalAssuredly, that to which you invite me has no [response to a] supplication in this world or in the Hereafter; and indeed, our return is to Allāh, and indeed, the transgressors will be companions of the Fire.
-
40:44
فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ مَآ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَصِيرٌۢ بِٱلْعِبَادِ ٤٤
Fasatathkuroona ma aqoolulakum waofawwidu amree ila Allahi inna Allahabaseerun bilAAibad
QaraiSoon you will remember what I tell you, and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed Allah watches His servants.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants."
-
40:45
فَوَقَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ سَئَِّاتِ مَا مَكَرُوا۟ ۖ وَحَاقَ بَِٔالِ فِرْعَوْنَ سُوٓءُ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٤٥
Fawaqahu Allahu sayyi-atima makaroo wahaqa bi-ali firAAawna soo-oalAAathab
QaraiThen Allah saved him from their evil schemes, while a terrible punishment besieged Pharaoh’s clan:
Saheeh InternationalSo Allāh protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment -
-
40:46
ٱلنَّارُ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا غُدُوًّا وَعَشِيًّا ۖ وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْخِلُوٓا۟ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَشَدَّ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٤٦
Annaru yuAAradoonaAAalayha ghuduwwan waAAashiyyan wayawma taqoomu assaAAatuadkhiloo ala firAAawna ashadda alAAathab
Qaraithe Fire, to which they are exposed morning and evening. On the day when the Hour sets in, Pharaoh’s clan will enter the severest punishment.
Saheeh InternationalThe Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."

40:47
وَإِذْ يَتَحَآجُّونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ فَيَقُولُ ٱلضُّعَفَٰٓؤُا۟ لِلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمْ تَبَعًا فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّغْنُونَ عَنَّا نَصِيبًا مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ ٤٧
Wa-ith yatahajjoona fee annarifayaqoolu adduAAafao lillatheenaistakbaroo inna kunna lakum tabaAAan fahal antummughnoona AAanna naseeban mina annar
QaraiWhen they argue in the Fire, the oppressed will say to the oppressors, ‘We used to follow you; will you avail us against any portion of the Fire?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?"
-
40:48
قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُلٌّ فِيهَآ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدْ حَكَمَ بَيْنَ ٱلْعِبَادِ ٤٨
Qala allatheena istakbaroo innakullun feeha inna Allaha qad hakama baynaalAAibad
QaraiThe oppressors will say, ‘We are all in it [together]; Allah has judged between [His] servants.’
Saheeh InternationalThose who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."
-
40:49
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ لِخَزَنَةِ جَهَنَّمَ ٱدْعُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ يُخَفِّفْ عَنَّا يَوْمًا مِّنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٤٩
Waqala allatheena fee annarilikhazanati jahannama odAAoo rabbakum yukhaffif AAannayawman mina alAAathab
QaraiThose who are in the Fire will say to the keepers of hell, ‘Invoke your Lord to lighten for us [at least] a day’s punishment.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
-
40:50
قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ تَكُ تَأْتِيكُمْ رُسُلُكُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ ۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ ۚ قَالُوا۟ فَٱدْعُوا۟ ۗ وَمَا دُعَٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ إِلَّا فِى ضَلَٰلٍ ٥٠
Qaloo awa lam taku ta/teekumrusulukum bilbayyinati qaloo bala qaloofadAAoo wama duAAao alkafireena illafee dalal
QaraiThey will say, ‘Had not your apostles brought you manifest proofs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ They will say, ‘Then invoke [Him] yourselves.’ But the invocations of the faithless only go awry.
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error [i.e., futility]."
-
40:51
إِنَّا لَنَنصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلْأَشْهَٰدُ ٥١
Inna lanansuru rusulanawallatheena amanoo fee alhayatiaddunya wayawma yaqoomu al-ashhad
QaraiIndeed We shall help Our apostles and those who have faith in the life of the world and on the day when the witnesses rise up,
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -
-
40:52
يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ ۖ وَلَهُمُ ٱللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوٓءُ ٱلدَّارِ ٥٢
Yawma la yanfaAAu aththalimeenamaAAthiratuhum walahumu allaAAnatu walahum soo-o addar
Qaraithe day when the excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them, the curse will lie on them, and for them will be the ills of the [ultimate] abode.
Saheeh InternationalThe Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].
-
40:53
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَأَوْرَثْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ ٥٣
Walaqad atayna moosaalhuda waawrathna banee isra-eela alkitab
QaraiCertainly We gave guidance to Moses and We gave the Children of Israel the Book as a legacy,
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture
-
40:54
هُدًى وَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ ٥٤
Hudan wathikra li-olee al-albab
Qaraias guidance and admonition for those who possess intellect.
Saheeh InternationalAs guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.
-
40:55
فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِبْكَٰرِ ٥٥
Fasbir inna waAAda Allahihaqqun wastaghfir lithanbika wasabbihbihamdi rabbika bilAAashiyyi wal-ibkar
QaraiSo be patient! Allah’s promise is indeed true. Plead [Allah] for forgiveness of your sin, and celebrate the praise of your Lord morning and evening.
Saheeh InternationalSo be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
-
40:56
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ إِن فِى صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَٰلِغِيهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ ٥٦
Inna allatheena yujadiloonafee ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahumin fee sudoorihim illa kibrun ma hum bibaligheehifastaAAith billahi innahu huwa assameeAAualbaseer
QaraiIndeed those who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority that may have come to them—there is [an ambition for] greatness in their breasts, which they will never attain. So seek the protection of Allah; indeed, He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.
-
40:57
لَخَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٥٧
Lakhalqu assamawati wal-ardiakbaru min khalqi annasi walakinna aktharaannasi la yaAAlamoon
QaraiThe creation of the heavens and the earth is surely more prodigious than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know.
Saheeh InternationalThe creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.
-
40:58
وَمَا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ وَٱلْبَصِيرُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَلَا ٱلْمُسِىٓءُ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ ٥٨
Wama yastawee al-aAAma walbaseeruwallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo assalihatiwala almusee-o qaleelan ma tatathakkaroon
QaraiThe blind one and the seer are not equal, neither are the evildoers and those who have faith and do righteous deeds. Little is the admonition that you take!
Saheeh InternationalAnd not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.
-
40:59
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لََٔاتِيَةٌ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ٥٩
Inna assaAAata laatiyatunla rayba feeha walakinna akthara annasila yu/minoon
QaraiIndeed the Hour is bound to come; there is no doubt in it. But most people do not believe.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.
-
40:60
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِى سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ٦٠
Waqala rabbukumu odAAoonee astajiblakum inna allatheena yastakbiroona AAan AAibadateesayadkhuloona jahannama dakhireen
QaraiYour Lord has said, ‘Call Me, and I will hear you!’ Indeed those who are disdainful of My worship will enter hell in utter humiliation.
Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
-
40:61
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا۟ فِيهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ ٦١
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumuallayla litaskunoo feehi wannahara mubsiraninna Allaha lathoo fadlin AAala annasiwalakinna akthara annasi layashkuroon
QaraiIt is Allah who made the night for you, that you may rest in it, and the day to provide visibility. Indeed Allah is gracious to mankind, but most people do not give thanks.
Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight. Indeed, Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful.

40:62
ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ خَٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤْفَكُونَ ٦٢
Thalikumu Allahu rabbukum khaliqukulli shay-in la ilaha illa huwa faannatu/fakoon
QaraiThat is Allah, your Lord, the creator of all things, there is no god except Him. Then where do you stray?
Saheeh InternationalThat is Allāh, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
-
40:63
كَذَٰلِكَ يُؤْفَكُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ بَِٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ ٦٣
Kathalika yu/faku allatheena kanoobi-ayati Allahi yajhadoon
QaraiThose who were used to impugning the signs of Allah are thus made to go astray.
Saheeh InternationalThus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allāh.
-
40:64
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ قَرَارًا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءً وَصَوَّرَكُمْ فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَكُمْ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۖ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٤
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumual-arda qararan wassamaa binaanwasawwarakum faahsana suwarakum warazaqakummina attayyibati thalikumu Allahurabbukum fatabaraka Allahu rabbu alAAalameen
QaraiIt is Allah who made for you the earth an abode and the sky a canopy. He formed you and perfected your forms, and provided you with all the good things. That is Allah, your Lord! Blessed is Allah, Lord of all the worlds!
Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
-
40:65
هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱدْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ ۗ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٥
Huwa alhayyu la ilahailla huwa fadAAoohu mukhliseena lahu addeenaalhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameen
QaraiHe is the Living One, there is no god except Him. So supplicate Him, putting exclusive faith in Him. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
Saheeh InternationalHe is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
-
40:66
۞ قُلْ إِنِّى نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَمَّا جَآءَنِىَ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ مِن رَّبِّى وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُسْلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٦
Qul innee nuheetu an aAAbuda allatheenatadAAoona min dooni Allahi lamma jaaniyaalbayyinatu min rabbee waomirtu an oslima lirabbi alAAalameen
QaraiSay, ‘I have been forbidden to worship those whom you invoke besides Allah, as manifest proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all the worlds.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."

40:67
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَشُدَّكُمْ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا۟ شُيُوخًا ۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن يُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَجَلًا مُّسَمًّى وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ ٦٧
Huwa allathee khalaqakum min turabinthumma min nutfatin thumma min AAalaqatin thummayukhrijukum tiflan thumma litablughoo ashuddakum thummalitakoonoo shuyookhan waminkum man yutawaffa min qabluwalitablughoo ajalan musamman walaAAallakum taAAqiloon
QaraiIt is He who created you from dust, then from a drop of [seminal] fluid, then from a clinging mass, then He brings you forth as infants, then [He nurtures you] so that you may come of age, and then that you may become aged—though there are some of you who die earlier—and complete a specified term, and so that you may exercise your reason.
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason.

40:68
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ فَإِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ ٦٨
Huwa allathee yuhyee wayumeetufa-itha qada amran fa-innama yaqoolu lahukun fayakoon
QaraiIt is He who gives life and brings death. When He decides on a matter, He just says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is.
Saheeh InternationalHe it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.
-
40:69
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ أَنَّىٰ يُصْرَفُونَ ٦٩
Alam tara ila allatheena yujadiloonafee ayati Allahi anna yusrafoon
QaraiHave you not regarded those who dispute the signs of Allah, where they are being led away [from Allah’s way]?
Saheeh InternationalDo you not consider those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh - how are they averted?
-
40:70
ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَبِمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا بِهِۦ رُسُلَنَا ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ ٧٠
Allatheena kaththaboo bilkitabiwabima arsalna bihi rusulana fasawfayaAAlamoon
Qarai—Those who deny the Book and what we have sent with Our apostles. Soon they will know
Saheeh InternationalThose who deny the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,
-
40:71
إِذِ ٱلْأَغْلَٰلُ فِىٓ أَعْنَٰقِهِمْ وَٱلسَّلَٰسِلُ يُسْحَبُونَ ٧١
Ithi al-aghlalu fee aAAnaqihimwassalasilu yushaboon
Qaraiwhen they are dragged [with] iron collars and chains around their necks
Saheeh InternationalWhen the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged
-
40:72
فِى ٱلْحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِى ٱلنَّارِ يُسْجَرُونَ ٧٢
Fee alhameemi thumma fee annariyusjaroon
Qaraiinto scalding waters and then set aflame in the Fire.
Saheeh InternationalIn boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].
-
40:73
ثُمَّ قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ ٧٣
Thumma qeela lahum ayna ma kuntumtushrikoon
QaraiThen they will be told, ‘Where are they whom you used to worship as deities
Saheeh InternationalThen it will be said to them, "Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship]
-
40:74
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ قَالُوا۟ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنَّا بَل لَّمْ نَكُن نَّدْعُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ شَئًْا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ ٧٤
Min dooni Allahi qaloo dallooAAanna bal lam nakun nadAAoo min qablu shay-an kathalikayudillu Allahu alkafireen
Qaraibesides Allah?’ They will say, ‘They have forsaken us. No, we did not invoke anything before.’ That is how Allah leads the faithless astray.
Saheeh InternationalOther than Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allāh put astray the disbelievers.
-
40:75
ذَٰلِكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَفْرَحُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمْ تَمْرَحُونَ ٧٥
Thalikum bima kuntum tafrahoonafee al-ardi bighayri alhaqqi wabima kuntumtamrahoon
Qarai‘That [punishment] is because you used to boast unduly on the earth and because you used to strut.
Saheeh International[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.
-
40:76
ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ أَبْوَٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ ٧٦
Odkhuloo abwaba jahannama khalideenafeeha fabi/sa mathwa almutakabbireen
QaraiEnter the gates of hell, to remain in it [forever].’ Evil is the [final] abode of the arrogant.
Saheeh InternationalEnter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."
-
40:77
فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۚ فَإِمَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى نَعِدُهُمْ أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُونَ ٧٧
Fasbir inna waAAda Allahihaqqun fa-imma nuriyannaka baAAda allatheenaAAiduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa-ilayna yurjaAAoon
QaraiSo be patient! Allah’s promise is indeed true. Whether We show you a part of what We promise them, or take you away [before that], [in any case] they will be brought back to Us.
Saheeh InternationalSo be patient, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.
-
40:78
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًا مِّن قَبْلِكَ مِنْهُم مَّن قَصَصْنَا عَلَيْكَ وَمِنْهُم مَّن لَّمْ نَقْصُصْ عَلَيْكَ ۗ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن يَأْتِىَ بَِٔايَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ قُضِىَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ ٧٨
Walaqad arsalna rusulan min qablikaminhum man qasasna AAalayka waminhum man lamnaqsus AAalayka wama kana lirasoolinan ya/tiya bi-ayatin illa bi-ithni Allahifa-itha jaa amru Allahi qudiya bilhaqqiwakhasira hunalika almubtiloon
QaraiCertainly We have sent apostles before you. Of them are those We have recounted to you, and of them are those We have not recounted to you. An apostle may not bring any sign except by Allah’s permission. Hence, when Allah’s edict comes, judgment is made with justice, and it is thence that the falsifiers become losers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allāh. So when the command of Allāh comes, it will be concluded [i.e., judged] in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].
-
40:79
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَنْعَٰمَ لِتَرْكَبُوا۟ مِنْهَا وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ ٧٩
Allahu allathee jaAAala lakumual-anAAama litarkaboo minha waminhata/kuloon
QaraiIt is Allah who created the cattle for you that you may ride some of them, and some of them you eat;
Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.
-
40:80
وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَٰفِعُ وَلِتَبْلُغُوا۟ عَلَيْهَا حَاجَةً فِى صُدُورِكُمْ وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ ٨٠
Walakum feeha manafiAAuwalitablughoo AAalayha hajatan fee sudoorikumwaAAalayha waAAala alfulki tuhmaloon
Qaraiand there are [numerous] uses in them for you, and that over them you may satisfy any need that is in your breasts, and you are carried on them and on ships.
Saheeh InternationalAnd for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts; and upon them and upon ships you are carried.
-
40:81
وَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ فَأَىَّ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُنكِرُونَ ٨١
Wayureekum ayatihi faayya ayatiAllahi tunkiroon
QaraiHe shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allah do you deny?
Saheeh InternationalAnd He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allāh do you deny?
-
40:82
أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوٓا۟ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّةً وَءَاثَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ ٨٢
Afalam yaseeroo fee al-ardi fayanthurookayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihimkanoo akthara minhum waashadda quwwatan waatharanfee al-ardi fama aghna AAanhum ma kanooyaksiboon
QaraiHave they not travelled over the land so that they may observe how was the fate of those who were before them? They were more numerous than them and were greater [than them] in power and with respect to the effects [they left] in the land. But what they used to earn did not avail them.
Saheeh InternationalHave they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
-
40:83
فَلَمَّا جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ ٨٣
Falamma jaat-hum rusuluhum bilbayyinatifarihoo bima AAindahum mina alAAilmi wahaqabihim ma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oon
QaraiWhen their apostles brought them manifest proofs, they boasted about the knowledge they possessed, but they were besieged by what they used to deride.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
-
40:84
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا۟ بَأْسَنَا قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَحْدَهُۥ وَكَفَرْنَا بِمَا كُنَّا بِهِۦ مُشْرِكِينَ ٨٤
Falamma raaw ba/sana qalooamanna billahi wahdahuwakafarna bima kunna bihi mushrikeen
QaraiThen, when they sighted Our punishment, they said, ‘We believe in Allah alone, and disavow what we used to take as His partners.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."
-
40:85
فَلَمْ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمْ إِيمَٰنُهُمْ لَمَّا رَأَوْا۟ بَأْسَنَا ۖ سُنَّتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِى قَدْ خَلَتْ فِى عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ ٨٥
Falam yaku yanfaAAuhum eemanuhum lammaraaw ba/sana sunnata Allahi allatee qad khalat feeAAibadihi wakhasira hunalika alkafiroon
QaraiBut their faith was of no benefit to them when they sighted Our punishment—Allah’s precedent, which has passed among His servants, and it is thence that the faithless will be losers.
Saheeh InternationalBut never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
