بِسْمِ

12:1
ا
لٓ ر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَٰ تُٱ لْكِتَٰ بِٱ لْمُبِي نِ ١Alif-lam-ra tilka ayatualkitabi almubeen
Aif, Lam, Ra. These are the signs of the Manifest Book.Ali Quli Qarai
Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the clear Book.Saheeh International
-
12:2
إِ
نّ َآ أَنز َلْنَٰ هُ قُرْءَٰ نًا عَرَبِيًّ ۭا ل َّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُو نَ ٢Inna anzalnahu qur-ananAAarabiyyan laAAallakum taAAqiloon
Indeed We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may exercise your reason.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.Saheeh International

12:3
نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ
ٱ لْقَصَصِ بِمَآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ هَٰ ذَاٱ لْقُرْءَانَ وَإِن ك ُنت َ مِن ق َبْ لِهِۦ لَمِنَٱ لْغَٰ فِلِي نَ ٣Nahnu naqussu AAalayka ahsanaalqasasi bima awhayna ilayka hathaalqur-ana wa-in kunta min qablihi lamina alghafileen
We will recount to you the best of narratives in what We have revealed to you of this Quran, and indeed prior to it you were among those who are unaware [of it].Ali Quli Qarai
We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān although you were, before it, among the unaware.Saheeh International

12:4
إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَ
ٰٓ أَبَتِ إِنّ ِى رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبً ۭا و َٱ ل شَّمْسَ وَٱ لْقَمَرَ رَأَيْتُهُمْ لِى سَٰ جِدِي نَ ٤Ith qala yoosufu li-abeehi yaabati innee raaytu ahada AAashara kawkaban washshamsawalqamara raaytuhum lee sajideen
When Joseph said to his father, ‘Father! I saw eleven planets, and the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrating themselves before me,’Ali Quli Qarai
[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."Saheeh International

12:5
قَالَ يَ
ٰ بُنَىَّ لَا تَقْ صُصْ رُءْيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُوا۟ لَكَ كَيْدًا ۖ إِنّ َٱ ل شَّيْطَٰ نَ لِلْإِنس َٰ نِ عَدُوٌّ ۭم ُّبِي نٌۭ ٥Qala ya bunayya la taqsusru/yaka AAala ikhwatika fayakeedoo laka kaydan innaashshaytana lil-insani AAaduwwun mubeen
he said, ‘My son, do not recount your dream to your brothers, lest they should devise schemes against you. Satan is indeed man’s manifest enemy.Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.Saheeh International

12:6
وَكَذَ
ٰ لِكَ يَجْ تَبِيكَ رَبُّكَ وَيُعَلِّمُكَ مِن ت َأْوِيلِٱ لْأَحَادِيثِ وَيُتِمّ ُ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰٓ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ كَمَآ أَتَمّ َهَا عَلَىٰٓ أَبَوَيْكَ مِن ق َبْ لُ إِبْ رَٰ هِيمَ وَإِسْحَٰ قَ ۚ إِنّ َ رَبَّكَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِي مٌۭ ٦Wakathalika yajtabeeka rabbukawayuAAallimuka min ta/weeli al-ahadeethi wayutimmuniAAmatahu AAalayka waAAala ali yaAAqooba kamaatammaha AAala abawayka min qablu ibraheemawa-ishaqa inna rabbaka AAaleemun hakeem
That is how your Lord will choose you, and teach you the interpretation of dreams, and complete His blessing upon you and upon the house of Jacob, just as He completed it earlier for your fathers, Abraham and Isaac. Your Lord is indeed all-knowing and all-wise.’Ali Quli Qarai
And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."Saheeh International

12:7
۞ لَّقَ
دْ كَانَ فِى يُوسُفَ وَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓ ءَايَٰ تٌ ۭل ِّلسَّا ٓئِلِي نَ ٧Laqad kana fee yoosufa wa-ikhwatihi ayatunlissa-ileen
In Joseph and his brothers there are certainly signs for the seekers.Ali Quli Qarai
Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, [such as]Saheeh International
-
12:8
إِذْ قَالُو
ا۟ لَيُوسُفُ وَأَخُوهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِينَا مِنّ َا وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنّ َ أَبَانَا لَفِى ضَلَٰ لٍ ۢم ُّبِي نٍ ٨Ith qaloo layoosufu waakhoohu ahabbuila abeena minna wanahnu AAusbatuninna abana lafee dalalin mubeen
When they said, ‘Surely Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than [the rest of] us, though we are a hardy band. Our father is indeed in manifest error.’Ali Quli Qarai
When they said, "Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error.Saheeh International

12:9
ٱ
قْ تُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ أَوِٱ طْ رَحُوهُ أَرْضً ۭا ي َخْلُ لَكُمْ وَجْ هُ أَبِيكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا۟ مِنۢ ب َعْدِهِۦ قَوْمً ۭا ص َٰ لِحِي نَ ٩Oqtuloo yoosufa awi itrahoohuardan yakhlu lakum wajhu abeekum watakoonoo min baAAdihiqawman saliheen
‘Kill Joseph or cast him away into some [distant] land, so that your father’s attention may be exclusively towards you, and thereafter you may become a righteous lot.’Ali Quli Qarai
Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance [i.e., attention] of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."Saheeh International

12:10
قَالَ ق
َا ٓئِلٌ ۭم ِّنْهُمْ لَا تَقْ تُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِى غَيَٰ بَتِٱ لْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْ هُ بَعْضُٱ ل سَّيَّارَةِ إِن ك ُنت ُمْ فَٰ عِلِي نَ ١٠Qala qa-ilun minhum lataqtuloo yoosufa waalqoohu fee ghayabati aljubbi yaltaqithubaAAdu assayyarati in kuntum faAAileen
One of them said, ‘Do not kill Joseph, but cast him into the recess of a well so that some caravan may pick him up, if you are to do [anything].’Ali Quli Qarai
Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."Saheeh International

12:11
قَالُو
ا۟ يَٰٓ أَبَانَا مَا لَكَ لَا تَأْمَ۫نّ َا عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَإِنّ َا لَهُۥ لَنَٰ صِحُو نَ ١١Qaloo ya abana malaka la ta/manna AAala yoosufa wa-innalahu lanasihoon
They said, ‘Father! Why is it that you do not trust us with Joseph? We are indeed his well-wishers.Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors?Saheeh International

12:12
أَرْسِلْهُ مَعَنَا غَ
دً ۭا ي َرْتَعْ وَيَلْعَبْ وَإِنّ َا لَهُۥ لَحَٰ فِظُو نَ ١٢Arsilhu maAAana ghadan yartaAAwayalAAab wa-inna lahu lahafithoon
Let him go with us tomorrow so that he may eat lots of fruits and play, and we will indeed take [good] care of him.’Ali Quli Qarai
Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians."Saheeh International

12:13
قَالَ إِ
نّ ِى لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ أَن ت َذْهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَخَافُ أَن ي َأْكُلَهُٱ ل ذِّئْبُ وَأَنت ُمْ عَنْهُ غَٰ فِلُو نَ ١٣Qala innee layahzununee an thathhaboobihi waakhafu an ya/kulahu aththi/buwaantum AAanhu ghafiloon
He said, ‘It really upsets me that you should take him away, and I fear the wolf may eat him while you are oblivious of him.’Ali Quli Qarai
[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."Saheeh International

12:14
قَالُو
ا۟ لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُٱ ل ذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنّ َآ إِذً ۭا ل َّخَٰ سِرُو نَ ١٤Qaloo la-in akalahu aththi/buwanahnu AAusbatun inna ithan lakhasiroon
They said, ‘Should the wolf eat him while we are a hardy band, then we will indeed be losers!’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."Saheeh International

12:15
فَلَ
مّ َا ذَهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَجْ مَعُوٓ ا۟ أَن ي َجْ عَلُوهُ فِى غَيَٰ بَتِٱ لْجُبِّ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّئَنّ َهُم ب ِأَمْرِهِمْ هَٰ ذَا وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُو نَ ١٥Falamma thahaboo bihiwaajmaAAoo an yajAAaloohu fee ghayabati aljubbi waawhaynailayhi latunabi-annahum bi-amrihim hatha wahum layashAAuroon
So when they took him away and conspired to put him into the recess of a well, We revealed to him, ‘[A day will come when] you will surely inform them about this affair of theirs while they are not aware [of your identity].’Ali Quli Qarai
So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."Saheeh International

12:16
وَج
َا ٓءُوٓ أَبَاهُمْ عِشَا ٓءً ۭي َبْ كُو نَ ١٦Wajaoo abahum AAishaanyabkoon
In the evening, they came weeping to their father.Ali Quli Qarai
And they came to their father at night, weeping.Saheeh International

12:17
قَالُو
ا۟ يَٰٓ أَبَانَآ إِنّ َا ذَهَبْ نَا نَسْتَبِقُ وَتَرَكْنَا يُوسُفَ عِند َ مَتَٰ عِنَا فَأَكَلَهُٱ ل ذِّئْبُ ۖ وَمَآ أَنت َ بِمُؤْمِنٍ ۢل َّنَا وَلَوْ كُنّ َا صَٰ دِقِي نَ ١٧Qaloo ya abanainna thahabna nastabiqu wataraknayoosufa AAinda mataAAina faakalahu aththi/buwama anta bimu/minin lana walaw kunna sadiqeen
They said, ‘Father! We had gone racing and left Joseph with our things, whereat the wolf ate him. But you will not believe us even if we spoke truly.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."Saheeh International

12:18
وَج
َا ٓءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍ ۢك َذِبٍ ۢۚ ق َالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنف ُسُكُمْ أَمْرً ۭا ۖ ف َصَبْ رٌ ۭج َمِيلٌ ۭۖ و َٱ للَّهُٱ لْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُو نَ ١٨Wajaoo AAala qameesihibidamin kathibin qala bal sawwalat lakum anfusukumamran fasabrun jameelun wallahu almustaAAanuAAala ma tasifoon
And they produced sham blood on his shirt. He said, ‘No, your souls have made a matter seem decorous to you. Yet patience is graceful, and Allah is my resort against what you allege.’Ali Quli Qarai
And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allāh is the one sought for help against that which you describe."Saheeh International

12:19
وَج
َا ٓءَتْ سَيَّارَةٌ ۭف َأَرْسَلُوا۟ وَارِدَهُمْ فَأَدْ لَىٰ دَلْوَهُۥ ۖ قَالَ يَٰ بُشْرَىٰ هَٰ ذَا غُلَٰ مٌ ۭۚ و َأَسَرُّوهُ بِضَٰ عَةً ۭۚ و َٱ للَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ ب ِمَا يَعْمَلُو نَ ١٩Wajaat sayyaratun faarsaloo waridahumfaadla dalwahu qala ya bushra hathaghulamun waasarroohu bidaAAatan wallahuAAaleemun bima yaAAmaloon
There came a caravan, and they sent their water-drawer, who let down his bucket. ‘Good news!’ he said. ‘This is a young boy!’ So they hid him as [a piece of] merchandise, and Allah knew best what they were doing.Ali Quli Qarai
And there came a company of travelers; then they sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, "Good news! Here is a boy." And they concealed him, [taking him] as merchandise; and Allāh was Knowing of what they did.Saheeh International

12:20
وَشَرَوْهُ بِثَمَ
نٍۭ ب َخْسٍ ۢد َرَٰ هِمَ مَعْدُودَةٍ ۢو َكَانُوا۟ فِيهِ مِنَٱ ل زَّٰ هِدِي نَ ٢٠Washarawhu bithamanin bakhsin darahimamaAAdoodatin wakanoo feehi mina azzahideen
And they sold him for a cheap price, a few dirhams, for they set small store by him.Ali Quli Qarai
And they sold him for a reduced price - a few dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those content with little.Saheeh International

12:21
وَقَالَ
ٱ لَّذِىٱ شْتَرَىٰ هُ مِن م ِّصْرَ لِٱ مْرَأَتِهِۦٓ أَكْرِمِى مَثْوَىٰ هُ عَسَىٰٓ أَن ي َنف َعَنَآ أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُۥ وَلَدً ۭا ۚ و َكَذَٰ لِكَ مَكَّنّ َا لِيُوسُفَ فِىٱ لْأَرْضِ وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ مِن ت َأْوِيلِٱ لْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ وَٱ للَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرِهِۦ وَلَٰ كِنّ َ أَكْثَرَٱ ل نّ َاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُو نَ ٢١Waqala allathee ishtarahumin misra limraatihi akrimee mathwahu AAasaan yanfaAAana aw nattakhithahu waladan wakathalikamakkanna liyoosufa fee al-ardi walinuAAallimahu minta/weeli al-ahadeethi wallahu ghalibunAAala amrihi walakinna akthara annasila yaAAlamoon
The man from Egypt who had bought him said to his wife, ‘Give him an honourable place [in the household]. Maybe he will be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ Thus We established Joseph in the land and that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams. Allah has [full] command of His affairs, but most people do not know.Ali Quli Qarai
And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events [i.e., dreams]. And Allāh is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know.Saheeh International

12:22
وَلَ
مّ َا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥٓ ءَاتَيْنَٰ هُ حُكْمً ۭا و َعِلْمً ۭا ۚ و َكَذَٰ لِكَ نَجْ زِىٱ لْمُحْسِنِي نَ ٢٢Walamma balagha ashuddahu ataynahuhukman waAAilman wakathalika najzee almuhsineen
When he came of age, We gave him judgement and [sacred] knowledge, and thus do We reward the virtuous.Ali Quli Qarai
And when he [i.e., Joseph] reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good.Saheeh International

12:23
وَرَ
ٰ وَدَتْهُٱ لَّتِى هُوَ فِى بَيْتِهَا عَن ن َّفْسِهِۦ وَغَلَّقَتِٱ لْأَبْ وَٰ بَ وَقَالَتْ هَيْتَ لَكَ ۚ قَالَ مَعَاذَٱ للَّهِ ۖ إِنّ َهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَحْسَنَ مَثْوَاىَ ۖ إِنّ َهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُٱ ل ظَّٰ لِمُو نَ ٢٣Warawadat-hu allatee huwa fee baytihaAAan nafsihi waghallaqati al-abwaba waqalat haytalaka qala maAAatha Allahi innahu rabbee ahsanamathwaya innahu la yuflihu aththalimoon
The woman in whose house he was, solicited him. She closed the doors and said, ‘Come!!’ He said, ‘God forbid! Indeed He is my Lord; He has given me a good abode. Indeed the wrongdoers are not felicitous.’Ali Quli Qarai
And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed."Saheeh International

12:24
وَلَقَ
دْ هَمّ َتْ بِهِۦ ۖ وَهَمّ َ بِهَا لَوْلَآ أَن ر َّءَا بُرْهَٰ نَ رَبِّهِۦ ۚ كَذَٰ لِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُٱ ل سُّو ٓءَ وَٱ لْفَحْشَا ٓءَ ۚ إِنّ َهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَاٱ لْمُخْلَصِي نَ ٢٤Walaqad hammat bihi wahamma biha lawlaan raa burhana rabbihi kathalika linasrifaAAanhu assoo-a walfahshaa innahumin AAibadina almukhlaseen
She certainly made for him; and he would have made for her [too] had he not beheld the proof of his Lord. So it was, that We might turn away from him all evil and indecency. He was indeed one of Our dedicated servants.Ali Quli Qarai
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof [i.e., sign] of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.Saheeh International

12:25
وَ
ٱ سْتَبَقَاٱ لْبَابَ وَقَدَّتْ قَمِيصَهُۥ مِن د ُبُرٍ ۢو َأَلْفَيَا سَيِّدَهَا لَدَاٱ لْبَابِ ۚ قَالَتْ مَا جَزَا ٓءُ مَنْ أَرَادَ بِأَهْلِكَ سُو ٓءًا إِلَّآ أَن ي ُسْجَنَ أَوْ عَذَابٌ أَلِي مٌۭ ٢٥Wastabaqa albabawaqaddat qameesahu min duburin waalfaya sayyidahalada albabi qalat ma jazao manarada bi-ahlika soo-an illa an yusjana aw AAathabunaleem
They raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they ran into her husband at the door. She said, ‘What is to be the requital of him who has evil intentions for your wife except imprisonment or a painful punishment?’Ali Quli Qarai
And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?"Saheeh International

12:26
قَالَ هِىَ رَ
ٰ وَدَتْنِى عَن ن َّفْسِى ۚ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌ ۭم ِّنْ أَهْلِهَآ إِن ك َانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن ق ُبُلٍ ۢف َصَدَقَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَٱ لْكَٰ ذِبِي نَ ٢٦Qala hiya rawadatnee AAannafsee washahida shahidun min ahliha in kanaqameesuhu qudda min qubulin fasadaqat wahuwa minaalkathibeen
He said, ‘It was she who solicited me.’ A witness of her own household testified [thus]: ‘If his shirt is torn from the front, she tells the truth and he lies.Ali Quli Qarai
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars.Saheeh International

12:27
وَإِ
ن ك َانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن د ُبُرٍ ۢف َكَذَبَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَٱ ل صَّٰ دِقِي نَ ٢٧Wa-in kana qameesuhu qudda minduburin fakathabat wahuwa mina assadiqeen
But if his shirt is torn from behind, then she lies and he tells the truth.’Ali Quli Qarai
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."Saheeh International

12:28
فَلَ
مّ َا رَءَا قَمِيصَهُۥ قُدَّ مِن د ُبُرٍ ۢق َالَ إِنّ َهُۥ مِن ك َيْدِكُنّ َ ۖ إِنّ َ كَيْدَكُنّ َ عَظِي مٌۭ ٢٨Falamma raa qameesahuqudda min duburin qala innahu min kaydikunna innakaydakunna AAatheem
So when he saw that his shirt was torn from behind, he said, ‘This is [a case] of you women’s guile! Your guile is indeed great!Ali Quli Qarai
So when he [i.e., her husband] saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of your [i.e., women's] plan. Indeed, your plan is great [i.e., vehement].Saheeh International

12:29
يُوسُفُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَ
ٰ ذَا ۚ وَٱ سْتَغْفِرِى لِذَنۢب ِكِ ۖ إِنّ َكِ كُنت ِ مِنَٱ لْخَاطِِٔي نَ ٢٩Yoosufu aAArid AAan hatha wastaghfireelithanbiki innaki kunti mina alkhati-een
Joseph, let this matter alone, and you, woman, plead for forgiveness for your sin, for you have indeed been erring.’Ali Quli Qarai
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."Saheeh International

12:30
۞ وَقَالَ نِسْوَ
ةٌ ۭف ِىٱ لْمَدِينَةِٱ مْرَأَتُٱ لْعَزِيزِ تُرَٰ وِدُ فَتَىٰ هَا عَن ن َّفْسِهِۦ ۖ قَدْ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّا ۖ إِنّ َا لَنَرَىٰ هَا فِى ضَلَٰ لٍ ۢم ُّبِي نٍۢ ٣٠Waqala niswatun fee almadeenatiimraatu alAAazeezi turawidu fataha AAannafsihi qad shaghafaha hubban inna lanarahafee dalalin mubeen
Some of the townswomen said, ‘The chieftain’s wife has solicited her slave boy! He has captivated her love. Indeed we see her to be in manifest error.’Ali Quli Qarai
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-ʿAzeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."Saheeh International

12:31
فَلَ
مّ َا سَمِعَتْ بِمَكْرِهِنّ َ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِنّ َ وَأَعْتَدَتْ لَهُنّ َ مُتَّكًَٔ ۭا و َءَاتَتْ كُلَّ وَٰ حِدَةٍ ۢم ِّنْهُنّ َ سِكِّينً ۭا و َقَالَتِٱ خْرُجْ عَلَيْهِنّ َ ۖ فَلَمّ َا رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ وَقَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنّ َ وَقُلْنَ حَٰ شَ لِلَّهِ مَا هَٰ ذَا بَشَرًا إِنْ هَٰ ذَآ إِلَّا مَلَكٌ ۭك َرِي مٌۭ ٣١Falamma samiAAat bimakrihinna arsalatilayhinna waaAAtadat lahunna muttakaan waatat kulla wahidatinminhunna sikkeenan waqalati okhruj AAalayhinna falammaraaynahu akbarnahu waqattaAAna aydiyahunna waqulna hashalillahi ma hatha basharan in hathailla malakun kareem
When she heard of their machinations, she sent for them and arranged a repast, and gave each of them a knife, and said [to Joseph], ‘Come out before them.’ So when they saw him, they marvelled at him and cut their hands [absent-mindedly], and they said, ‘Good heavens! This is not a human being! This is but a noble angel!’Ali Quli Qarai
So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allāh! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."Saheeh International

12:32
قَالَتْ فَذَ
ٰ لِكُنّ َٱ لَّذِى لُمْتُنّ َنِى فِيهِ ۖ وَلَقَدْ رَٰ وَد تُّهُۥ عَن ن َّفْسِهِۦ فَٱ سْتَعْصَمَ ۖ وَلَئِن ل َّمْ يَفْعَلْ مَآ ءَامُرُهُۥ لَيُسْجَنَنّ َ وَلَيَكُونً ۭا م ِّنَٱ ل صَّٰ غِرِي نَ ٣٢Qalat fathalikunna allatheelumtunnanee feehi walaqad rawadtuhu AAan nafsihi fastAAsamawala-in lam yafAAal ma amuruhu layusjanannawalayakoonan mina assaghireen
She said, ‘He is the one on whose account you blamed me. Certainly, I did solicit him, but he was continent, and if he does not do what I bid him, surely he shall be imprisoned and humbled.’Ali Quli Qarai
She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased."Saheeh International

12:33
قَالَ رَبِّ
ٱ ل سِّجْ نُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمّ َا يَدْ عُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ ۖ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنّ ِى كَيْدَهُنّ َ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنّ َ وَأَكُن م ِّنَٱ لْجَٰ هِلِي نَ ٣٣Qala rabbi assijnu ahabbuilayya mimma yadAAoonanee ilayhi wa-illa tasrifAAannee kaydahunna asbu ilayhinna waakun mina aljahileen
He said, ‘My Lord! The prison is dearer to me than to what they invite me. If You do not turn away their schemes from me, I will incline towards them and become one of the senseless.’Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."Saheeh International

12:34
فَ
ٱ سْتَجَابَ لَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ فَصَرَفَ عَنْهُ كَيْدَهُنّ َ ۚ إِنّ َهُۥ هُوَٱ ل سَّمِيعُٱ لْعَلِي مُ ٣٤Fastajaba lahu rabbuhu fasarafaAAanhu kaydahunna innahu huwa assameeAAu alAAaleem
So his Lord answered him and turned away their stratagems from him. Indeed, He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.Ali Quli Qarai
So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.Saheeh International

12:35
ثُ
مّ َ بَدَا لَهُم م ِّنۢ ب َعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا۟ ٱ لَْٔايَٰ تِ لَيَسْجُنُنّ َهُۥ حَتَّىٰ حِي نٍۢ ٣٥Thumma bada lahum min baAAdi maraawoo al-ayati layasjununnahu hatta heen
Then it appeared to them, after they had seen all the signs [of his innocence], that they should confine him for some time.Ali Quli Qarai
Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs that he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] should surely imprison him for a time.Saheeh International

12:36
وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ
ٱ ل سِّجْ نَ فَتَيَانِ ۖ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَآ إِنّ ِىٓ أَرَىٰ نِىٓ أَعْصِرُ خَمْرً ۭا ۖ و َقَالَٱ لَْٔاخَرُ إِنّ ِىٓ أَرَىٰ نِىٓ أَحْمِلُ فَوْقَ رَأْسِى خُبْ زً ۭا ت َأْكُلُٱ ل طَّيْرُ مِنْهُ ۖ نَبِّئْنَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنّ َا نَرَىٰ كَ مِنَٱ لْمُحْسِنِي نَ ٣٦Wadakhala maAAahu assijna fatayaniqala ahaduhuma innee aranee aAAsirukhamran waqala al-akharu innee aranee ahmilufawqa ra/see khubzan ta/kulu attayru minhu nabbi/nabita/weelihi inna naraka mina almuhsineen
There entered the prison two youths along with him. One of them said, ‘I dreamt that I am pressing grapes.’ The other said, ‘I dreamt that I am carrying bread on my head from which the birds are eating.’ ‘Inform us of its interpretation,’ [they said], ‘for indeed we see you to be a virtuous man.’Ali Quli Qarai
And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing [grapes for] wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good."Saheeh International

12:37
قَالَ لَا يَأْتِيكُمَا طَعَا
مٌ ۭت ُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓ إِلَّا نَبَّأْتُكُمَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ قَبْ لَ أَن ي َأْتِيَكُمَا ۚ ذَٰ لِكُمَا مِمّ َا عَلَّمَنِى رَبِّىٓ ۚ إِنّ ِى تَرَكْتُ مِلَّةَ قَوْمٍ ۢل َّا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱ للَّهِ وَهُم ب ِٱ لَْٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ كَٰ فِرُو نَ ٣٧Qala la ya/teekuma taAAamunturzaqanihi illa nabba/tukuma bita/weelihiqabla an ya/tiyakuma thalikuma mimmaAAallamanee rabbee innee taraktu millata qawmin layu/minoona billahi wahum bil-akhiratihum kafiroon
He said, ‘Before the meals you are served come to you I will inform you of its interpretation. That is among things my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I renounce the creed of the people who have no faith in Allah and who [also] disbelieve in the Hereafter.Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.Saheeh International

12:38
وَ
ٱ تَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَا ٓءِىٓ إِبْ رَٰ هِيمَ وَإِسْحَٰ قَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن ن ُّشْرِكَ بِٱ للَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۢۚ ذ َٰ لِكَ مِن ف َضْلِٱ للَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَىٱ ل نّ َاسِ وَلَٰ كِنّ َ أَكْثَرَٱ ل نّ َاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُو نَ ٣٨WattabaAAtu millata aba-eeibraheema wa-ishaqa wayaAAqooba ma kanalana an nushrika billahi min shay-in thalikamin fadli Allahi AAalayna waAAala annasiwalakinna akthara annasi layashkuroon
I follow the creed of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is not for us to ascribe any partner to Allah. That is by virtue of Allah’s grace upon us and upon all mankind, but most people do not give thanks.Ali Quli Qarai
And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allāh. That is from the favor of Allāh upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.Saheeh International

12:39
يَ
ٰ صَٰ حِبَىِٱ ل سِّجْ نِ ءَأَرْبَابٌ ۭم ُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِٱ للَّهُٱ لْوَٰ حِدُٱ لْقَهَّا رُ ٣٩Ya sahibayi assijniaarbabun mutafarriqoona khayrun ami Allahu alwahidualqahhar
O my prison mates! Are different masters better, or Allah, the One, the All-paramount?Ali Quli Qarai
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allāh, the One, the Prevailing?Saheeh International

12:40
مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِ
ن د ُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَا ٓءً ۭس َمّ َيْتُمُوهَآ أَنت ُمْ وَءَابَا ٓؤُكُم م َّآ أَنز َلَٱ للَّهُ بِهَا مِن س ُلْطَٰ نٍ ۚ إِنِٱ لْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓ ا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ ۚ ذَٰ لِكَٱ ل دِّينُٱ لْقَيِّمُ وَلَٰ كِنّ َ أَكْثَرَٱ ل نّ َاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُو نَ ٤٠Ma taAAbudoona min doonihi illaasmaan sammaytumooha antum waabaokumma anzala Allahu biha min sultaninini alhukmu illa lillahi amara allataAAbudoo illa iyyahu thalika addeenualqayyimu walakinna akthara annasi layaAAlamoon
You do not worship besides Him but [mere] names that you and your fathers have coined, for which Allah has not sent down any authority. Sovereignty belongs only to Allah. He has commanded you to worship none except Him. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know.Ali Quli Qarai
You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allāh has sent down no evidence. Legislation is not but for Allāh. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.Saheeh International

12:41
يَ
ٰ صَٰ حِبَىِٱ ل سِّجْ نِ أَمّ َآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِى رَبَّهُۥ خَمْرً ۭا ۖ و َأَمّ َاٱ لَْٔاخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُٱ ل طَّيْرُ مِن ر َّأْسِهِۦ ۚ قُضِىَٱ لْأَمْرُٱ لَّذِى فِيهِ تَسْتَفْتِيَا نِ ٤١Ya sahibayi assijniamma ahadukuma fayasqee rabbahu khamranwaamma al-akharu fayuslabu fata/kulu attayrumin ra/sihi qudiya al-amru allathee feehi tastaftiyan
O my prison mates! As for one of you, he will serve wine to his master, and as for the other, he will be crucified and vultures will eat from his head. The matter about which you inquire has been decided.’Ali Quli Qarai
O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."Saheeh International

12:42
وَقَالَ لِلَّذِى ظَ
نّ َ أَنّ َهُۥ نَاجٍ ۢم ِّنْهُمَاٱ ذْكُرْنِى عِند َ رَبِّكَ فَأَنس َىٰ هُٱ ل شَّيْطَٰ نُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِىٱ ل سِّجْ نِ بِضْعَ سِنِي نَ ٤٢Waqala lillathee thannaannahu najin minhuma othkurnee AAindarabbika faansahu ashshaytanu thikrarabbihi falabitha fee assijni bidAAa sineen
Then he said to the one whom he knew would be delivered from among the two: ‘Mention me to your master.’ But Satan caused him to forget mentioning [it] to his master. So he remained in the prison for several years.Ali Quli Qarai
And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and he [i.e., Joseph] remained in prison several years.Saheeh International

12:43
وَقَالَ
ٱ لْمَلِكُ إِنّ ِىٓ أَرَىٰ سَبْ عَ بَقَرَٰ تٍ ۢس ِمَانٍ ۢي َأْكُلُهُنّ َ سَبْ عٌ عِجَافٌ ۭو َسَبْ عَ سُنۢب ُلَٰ تٍ خُضْرٍ ۢو َأُخَرَ يَابِسَٰ تٍ ۢۖ ي َٰٓ أَيُّهَاٱ لْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِى فِى رُءْيَٰ ىَ إِن ك ُنت ُمْ لِلرُّءْيَا تَعْبُرُو نَ ٤٣Waqala almaliku innee arasabAAa baqaratin simanin ya/kuluhunna sabAAun AAijafunwasabAAa sunbulatin khudrin waokhara yabisatinya ayyuha almalao aftoonee fee ru/yaya inkuntum lirru/ya taAAburoon
[One day] the king said, ‘I saw [in a dream] seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears and [seven] others [that were] dry. O courtiers, give me your opinion about my dream, if you can interpret dreams.’Ali Quli Qarai
And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions."Saheeh International

12:44
قَال
ُوٓ ا۟ أَضْغَٰ ثُ أَحْلَٰ مٍ ۢۖ و َمَا نَحْنُ بِتَأْوِيلِٱ لْأَحْلَٰ مِ بِعَٰ لِمِي نَ ٤٤Qaloo adghathu ahlaminwama nahnu bita/weeli al-ahlami biAAalimeen
They said, ‘[These are] confused nightmares, and we do not know the interpretation of nightmares.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."Saheeh International

12:45
وَقَالَ
ٱ لَّذِى نَجَا مِنْهُمَا وَٱ دَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أُمّ َةٍ أَنَا۠ أُنَبِّئُكُم ب ِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ فَأَرْسِلُو نِ ٤٥Waqala allathee najaminhuma waddakara baAAda ommatin anaonabbi-okum bita/weelihi faarsiloon
Said the one of the two who had been delivered, remembering [Joseph] after a long time: ‘I will inform you of its interpretation; so let me go [to meet Joseph in the prison].’Ali Quli Qarai
But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."Saheeh International

12:46
يُوسُفُ أَيُّهَا
ٱ ل صِّدِّيقُ أَفْتِنَا فِى سَبْ عِ بَقَرَٰ تٍ ۢس ِمَانٍ ۢي َأْكُلُهُنّ َ سَبْ عٌ عِجَافٌ ۭو َسَبْ عِ سُنۢب ُلَٰ تٍ خُضْرٍ ۢو َأُخَرَ يَابِسَٰ تٍ ۢل َّعَلِّىٓ أَرْجِعُ إِلَىٱ ل نّ َاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْلَمُو نَ ٤٦Yoosufu ayyuha assiddeequaftina fee sabAAi baqaratin simaninya/kuluhunna sabAAun AAijafun wasabAAi sunbulatinkhudrin waokhara yabisatin laAAallee arjiAAuila annasi laAAallahum yaAAlamoon
‘Joseph,’ [he said], ‘O truthful one, give us your opinion concerning seven fat cows who are eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears and [seven] others dry, that I may return to the people so that they may know [the truth of the matter].’Ali Quli Qarai
[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]."Saheeh International

12:47
قَالَ تَزْرَعُونَ سَ
بْ عَ سِنِينَ دَأَبً ۭا ف َمَا حَصَد تُّمْ فَذَرُوهُ فِى سُنۢب ُلِهِۦٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلً ۭام ِّمّ َا تَأْكُلُو نَ ٤٧Qala tazraAAoona sabAAa sineenadaaban fama hasadtum fatharoohu feesunbulihi illa qaleelan mimma ta/kuloon
He said, ‘You will sow for seven consecutive years. Then leave in the ear whatever [grain] you harvest, except a little that you eat.Ali Quli Qarai
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.Saheeh International

12:48
ثُ
مّ َ يَأْتِى مِنۢ ب َعْدِ ذَٰ لِكَ سَبْ عٌ ۭش ِدَادٌ ۭي َأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنّ َ إِلَّا قَلِيلً ۭام ِّمّ َا تُحْصِنُو نَ ٤٨Thumma ya/tee min baAAdi thalikasabAAun shidadun ya/kulna ma qaddamtum lahunna illaqaleelan mimma tuhsinoon
Then after that there will come seven hard years which will eat up whatever you have set aside for them—all except a little which you preserve [for seed].Ali Quli Qarai
Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store.Saheeh International

12:49
ثُ
مّ َ يَأْتِى مِنۢ ب َعْدِ ذَٰ لِكَ عَامٌ ۭف ِيهِ يُغَاثُٱ ل نّ َاسُ وَفِيهِ يَعْصِرُو نَ ٤٩Thumma ya/tee min baAAdi thalika AAamunfeehi yughathu annasu wafeehi yaAAsiroon
Then after that there will come a year wherein the people will be granted relief and provided with rains therein.Ali Quli Qarai
Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]."Saheeh International

12:50
وَقَالَ
ٱ لْمَلِكُٱ ئْتُونِى بِهِۦ ۖ فَلَمّ َا جَا ٓءَهُٱ ل رَّسُولُ قَالَٱ رْجِعْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَسَْٔلْهُ مَا بَالُٱ ل نّ ِسْوَةِٱ لَّٰ تِى قَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنّ َ ۚ إِنّ َ رَبِّى بِكَيْدِهِنّ َ عَلِي مٌۭ ٥٠Waqala almaliku i/toonee bihi falammajaahu arrasoolu qala irjiAA ilarabbika fas-alhu ma balu anniswatiallatee qattaAAna aydiyahunna inna rabbeebikaydihinna AAaleem
The king said, ‘Bring him to me!’ When the messenger came to him, he said, ‘Go back to your master, and ask him about the affair of women who cut their hands. My Lord is indeed well aware of their stratagems.’Ali Quli Qarai
And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan."Saheeh International

12:51
قَالَ مَا خَ
طْ بُكُنّ َ إِذْ رَٰ وَد تُّنّ َ يُوسُفَ عَن ن َّفْسِهِۦ ۚ قُلْنَ حَٰ شَ لِلَّهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِن س ُو ٓءٍ ۢۚ ق َالَتِٱ مْرَأَتُٱ لْعَزِيزِٱ لَْٰٔ نَ حَصْحَصَٱ لْحَقُّ أَنَا۠ رَٰ وَد تُّهُۥ عَن ن َّفْسِهِۦ وَإِنّ َهُۥ لَمِنَٱ ل صَّٰ دِقِي نَ ٥١Qala ma khatbukunna ithrawadtunna yoosufa AAan nafsihi qulna hasha lillahima AAalimna AAalayhi min soo-in qalatiimraatu alAAazeezi al-ana hashasa alhaqquana rawadtuhu AAan nafsihi wa-innahu lamina assadiqeen
The king said, ‘What was your business, women, when you solicited Joseph?’ They said, ‘Heaven be praised! We know of no evil in him.’ The prince’s wife said, ‘Now the truth has come to light! It was I who solicited him, and he is indeed telling the truth.’Ali Quli Qarai
Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allāh! We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.Saheeh International

12:52
ذَ
ٰ لِكَ لِيَعْلَمَ أَنّ ِى لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِٱ لْغَيْبِ وَأَنّ َٱ للَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى كَيْدَٱ لْخَا ٓئِنِي نَ ٥٢Thalika liyaAAlama annee lam akhunhubilghaybi waanna Allaha la yahdee kaydaalkha-ineen
[Joseph said], [‘I initiated] this [inquiry], that he may know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that Allah does not further the schemes of the treacherous.’Ali Quli Qarai
That is so he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allāh does not guide the plan of betrayers.Saheeh International

12:53
۞ وَم
َآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِىٓ ۚ إِنّ َٱ ل نّ َفْسَ لَأَمّ َارَةٌۢ ب ِٱ ل سُّو ٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّىٓ ۚ إِنّ َ رَبِّى غَفُورٌ ۭر َّحِي مٌۭ ٥٣Wama obarri-o nafsee inna annafsalaammaratun bissoo-i illa ma rahimarabbee inna rabbee ghafoorun raheem
‘Yet I do not absolve my [own carnal] soul, for the [carnal] soul indeed prompts [men] to evil, except inasmuch as my Lord has mercy. Indeed my Lord is all-forgiving, all-merciful.’Ali Quli Qarai
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."Saheeh International

12:54
وَقَالَ
ٱ لْمَلِكُٱ ئْتُونِى بِهِۦٓ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِى ۖ فَلَمّ َا كَلَّمَهُۥ قَالَ إِنّ َكَٱ لْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِي نٌۭ ٥٤Waqala almaliku i/toonee bihiastakhlishu linafsee falamma kallamahu qalainnaka alyawma ladayna makeenun ameen
The king said, ‘Bring him to me, I will make him my favourite.’ Then, when he had spoken with him, he said, ‘Indeed today [onwards] you will be honoured and trustworthy with us.’Ali Quli Qarai
And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."Saheeh International

12:55
قَالَ
ٱ جْ عَلْنِى عَلَىٰ خَزَا ٓئِنِٱ لْأَرْضِ ۖ إِنّ ِى حَفِيظٌ عَلِي مٌۭ ٥٥Qala ijAAalnee AAala khaza-inial-ardi innee hafeethun AAaleem
He said, ‘Put me in charge of the country’s granaries. I am indeed fastidious [and]well-informed.’Ali Quli Qarai
[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."Saheeh International

12:56
وَكَذَ
ٰ لِكَ مَكَّنّ َا لِيُوسُفَ فِىٱ لْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَا ٓءُ ۚ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن ن َّشَا ٓءُ ۖ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْ رَٱ لْمُحْسِنِي نَ ٥٦Wakathalika makanna liyoosufafee al-ardi yatabawwao minha haythu yashaonuseebu birahmatina man nashao walanudeeAAu ajra almuhsineen
That is how We established Joseph in the land that he may settle in it wherever he wished. We confer Our mercy on whomever We wish, and We do not waste the reward of the virtuous.Ali Quli Qarai
And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.Saheeh International

12:57
وَلَأَ
جْ رُٱ لَْٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌ ۭل ِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُو نَ ٥٧Walaajru al-akhirati khayrun lillatheenaamanoo wakanoo yattaqoon
And the reward of the Hereafter is surely better for those who have faith and are Godwary.Ali Quli Qarai
And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allāh.Saheeh International

12:58
وَج
َا ٓءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنك ِرُو نَ ٥٨Wajaa ikhwatu yoosufa fadakhalooAAalayhi faAAarafahum wahum lahu munkiroon
[After some years] the brothers of Joseph came and entered his presence. He recognized them, but they did not recognize him.Ali Quli Qarai
And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.Saheeh International

12:59
وَلَ
مّ َا جَهَّزَهُم ب ِجَهَازِهِمْ قَالَٱ ئْتُونِى بِأَخٍ ۢل َّكُم م ِّنْ أَبِيكُمْ ۚ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنّ ِىٓ أُوفِىٱ لْكَيْلَ وَأَنَا۠ خَيْرُٱ لْمُنز ِلِي نَ ٥٩Walamma jahhazahum bijahazihimqala i/toonee bi-akhin lakum min abeekum alatarawna annee oofee alkayla waana khayru almunzileen
When he had furnished them with their provision, he said, ‘Bring me a brother that you have through your father. Do you not see that I give the full measure and that I am the best of hosts?Ali Quli Qarai
And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?Saheeh International

12:60
فَإ
ِن ل َّمْ تَأْتُونِى بِهِۦ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِند ِى وَلَا تَقْ رَبُو نِ ٦٠Fa-in lam ta/toonee bihi fala kaylalakum AAindee wala taqraboon
But if you do not bring him to me, then there will be no rations for you with me, and don’t [ever] come near me.’Ali Quli Qarai
But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."Saheeh International

12:61
قَالُو
ا۟ سَنُرَٰ وِدُ عَنْهُ أَبَاهُ وَإِنّ َا لَفَٰ عِلُو نَ ٦١Qaloo sanurawidu AAanhu abahuwa-inna lafaAAiloon
They said, ‘We will solicit him from his father. [That] we will surely do.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."Saheeh International

12:62
وَقَالَ لِفِتْيَ
ٰ نِهِٱ جْ عَلُوا۟ بِضَٰ عَتَهُمْ فِى رِحَالِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَآ إِذَاٱ نق َلَبُوٓ ا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُو نَ ٦٢Waqala lifityanihi ijAAaloo bidaAAatahumfee rihalihim laAAallahum yaAArifoonaha ithainqalaboo ila ahlihim laAAallahum yarjiAAoon
He said to his servants, ‘Put their money [back] into their saddlebags. Maybe they will recognize it when they return to their folks, and maybe they will come back [again].’Ali Quli Qarai
And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."Saheeh International

12:63
فَلَ
مّ َا رَجَعُوٓ ا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيهِمْ قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓ أَبَانَا مُنِعَ مِنّ َاٱ لْكَيْلُ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَآ أَخَانَا نَكْتَلْ وَإِنّ َا لَهُۥ لَحَٰ فِظُو نَ ٦٣Falamma rajaAAoo ila abeehim qalooya abana muniAAa minna alkaylufaarsil maAAana akhana naktal wa-innalahu lahafithoon
So when they returned to their father, they said, ‘Father, the measure has been withheld from us, so let our brother go with us so that we may obtain the measure, and we will indeed take [good] care of him.’Ali Quli Qarai
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."Saheeh International

12:64
قَالَ هَلْ ءَامَنُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا كَم
َآ أَمِنت ُكُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَخِيهِ مِن ق َبْ لُ ۖ فَٱ للَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَٰ فِظً ۭا ۖ و َهُوَ أَرْحَمُٱ ل رَّٰ حِمِي نَ ٦٤Qala hal amanukum AAalayhi illakama amintukum AAala akheehi min qablu fallahukhayrun hafithan wahuwa arhamu arrahimeen
He said, ‘Should I not trust you with him just as I trusted you with his brother before? Yet Allah is the best of protectors, and He is the most merciful of merciful ones.’Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allāh is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."Saheeh International

12:65
وَلَ
مّ َا فَتَحُوا۟ مَتَٰ عَهُمْ وَجَدُوا۟ بِضَٰ عَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓ أَبَانَا مَا نَبْ غِى ۖ هَٰ ذِهِۦ بِضَٰ عَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا ۖ وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ ۢۖ ذ َٰ لِكَ كَيْلٌ ۭي َسِي رٌۭ ٦٥Walamma fatahoo mataAAahumwajadoo bidaAAatahum ruddat ilayhim qaloo yaabana ma nabghee hathihi bidaAAatunaruddat ilayna wanameeru ahlana wanahfathuakhana wanazdadu kayla baAAeerin thalikakaylun yaseer
And when they opened their baggage, they found their money restored to them. They said, ‘Father, what [more] do we want?! This is our money, restored to us! We will get provisions for our family and take care of our brother, and add another camel-load of rations. These are meagre rations.’Ali Quli Qarai
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies [i.e., food] for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."Saheeh International

12:66
قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُ
ۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقً ۭا م ِّنَٱ للَّهِ لَتَأْتُنّ َنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن ي ُحَاطَ بِكُمْ ۖ فَلَمّ َآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَٱ للَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِي لٌۭ ٦٦Qala lan orsilahu maAAakum hattatu/tooni mawthiqan mina Allahi lata/tunnanee bihi illaan yuhata bikum falamma atawhu mawthiqahum qalaAllahu AAala ma naqoolu wakeel
He said, ‘I will not let him go with you until you give me a [solemn] pledge by Allah that you will surely bring him back to me, unless you are made to perish.’ When they had given him their [solemn] pledge, he said, ‘Allah is witness over what we say.’Ali Quli Qarai
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise [i.e., oath] by Allāh that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded [i.e., overcome by enemies]." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allāh, over what we say, is Entrusted."Saheeh International

12:67
وَقَالَ يَ
ٰ بَنِىَّ لَا تَدْ خُلُوا۟ مِنۢ ب َابٍ ۢو َٰ حِدٍ ۢو َٱ دْ خُلُوا۟ مِنْ أَبْ وَٰ بٍ ۢم ُّتَفَرِّقَةٍ ۢۖ و َمَآ أُغْنِى عَنك ُم م ِّنَٱ للَّهِ مِن ش َىْءٍ ۖ إِنِٱ لْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَعَلَيْهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِٱ لْمُتَوَكِّلُو نَ ٦٧Waqala ya baniyya latadkhuloo min babin wahidin wadkhuloo minabwabin mutafarriqatin wama oghnee AAankum mina Allahimin shay-in ini alhukmu illa lillahiAAalayhi tawakkaltu waAAalayhi falyatawakkali almutawakkiloon
And he said, ‘My sons, do not enter by one gate, but enter by separate gates, though I cannot avail you anything against Allah. Sovereignty belongs only to Allah. In Him I have put my trust; and in Him let all the trusting put their trust.’Ali Quli Qarai
And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allāh at all. The decision is only for Allāh; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely."Saheeh International

12:68
وَلَ
مّ َا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم م َّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم م ِّنَٱ للَّهِ مِن ش َىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةً ۭف ِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰ هَا ۚ وَإِنّ َهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍ ۢل ِّمَا عَلَّمْنَٰ هُ وَلَٰ كِنّ َ أَكْثَرَٱ ل نّ َاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُو نَ ٦٨Walamma dakhaloo min haythuamarahum aboohum ma kana yughnee AAanhum mina Allahimin shay-in illa hajatan fee nafsi yaAAqooba qadahawa-innahu lathoo AAilmin lima AAallamnahuwalakinna akthara annasi layaAAlamoon
When they entered whence their father had bidden them, it did not avail them anything against Allah, but only fulfilled a wish in Jacob’s heart. Indeed, he had the knowledge of what We had taught him, but most people do not know.Ali Quli Qarai
And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allāh at all except [it was] a need [i.e., concern] within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.Saheeh International

12:69
وَلَ
مّ َا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ ءَاوَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَخَاهُ ۖ قَالَ إِنّ ِىٓ أَنَا۠ أَخُوكَ فَلَا تَبْ تَئِسْ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُو نَ ٦٩Walamma dakhaloo AAala yoosufaawa ilayhi akhahu qala innee anaakhooka fala tabta-is bima kanoo yaAAmaloon
When they entered into the presence of Joseph, he set his brother close to himself, and said, ‘Indeed I am your brother, so do not sorrow for what they used to do.’Ali Quli Qarai
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]."Saheeh International

12:70
فَلَ
مّ َا جَهَّزَهُم ب ِجَهَازِهِمْ جَعَلَٱ ل سِّقَايَةَ فِى رَحْلِ أَخِيهِ ثُمّ َ أَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌ أَيَّتُهَاٱ لْعِيرُ إِنّ َكُمْ لَسَٰ رِقُو نَ ٧٠Falamma jahhazahum bijahazihimjaAAala assiqayata fee rahli akheehi thummaaththana mu-aththinun ayyatuha alAAeeruinnakum lasariqoon
When he had furnished them with their provision, he put the drinking-cup into his brother’s saddlebag. Then a herald shouted: ‘O [men of the] caravan! You are indeed thieves!’Ali Quli Qarai
So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves."Saheeh International

12:71
قَالُو
ا۟ وَأَقْ بَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِم م َّاذَا تَفْقِدُو نَ ٧١Qaloo waaqbaloo AAalayhim mathatafqidoon
They said, as they turned towards them, ‘What are you missing?’Ali Quli Qarai
They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"Saheeh International

12:72
قَالُو
ا۟ نَفْقِدُ صُوَاعَٱ لْمَلِكِ وَلِمَن ج َا ٓءَ بِهِۦ حِمْلُ بَعِيرٍ ۢو َأَنَا۠ بِهِۦ زَعِي مٌۭ ٧٢Qaloo nafqidu suwaAAaalmaliki waliman jaa bihi himlu baAAeerin waanabihi zaAAeem
They said, ‘We miss the king’s goblet.’ ‘Whoever brings it shall have a camel-load [of grain],’ [said the steward], ‘I will guarantee that.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it."Saheeh International

12:73
قَالُو
ا۟ تَٱ للَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُم م َّا جِئْنَا لِنُفْسِدَ فِىٱ لْأَرْضِ وَمَا كُنّ َا سَٰ رِقِي نَ ٧٣Qaloo tallahi laqadAAalimtum ma ji/na linufsida fee al-ardi wamakunna sariqeen
They said, ‘By Allah! You certainly know that we did not come to make trouble in this country, and we are not thieves.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "By Allāh, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves."Saheeh International

12:74
قَالُو
ا۟ فَمَا جَزَٰ ٓؤُهُۥٓ إِن ك ُنت ُمْ كَٰ ذِبِي نَ ٧٤Qaloo fama jazaohu inkuntum kathibeen
They said, ‘What shall be its requital if you [prove to] be lying?’Ali Quli Qarai
They [the accusers] said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars?"Saheeh International

12:75
قَالُو
ا۟ جَزَٰ ٓؤُهُۥ مَن و ُجِدَ فِى رَحْلِهِۦ فَهُوَ جَزَٰ ٓؤُهُۥ ۚ كَذَٰ لِكَ نَجْ زِىٱ ل ظَّٰ لِمِي نَ ٧٥Qaloo jazaohu man wujida feerahlihi fahuwa jazaohu kathalika najzee aththalimeen
They said, ‘The requital for it shall be that he in whose saddlebag it is found shall give himself over as its requital. Thus do we requite the wrongdoers.’Ali Quli Qarai
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."Saheeh International

12:76
فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَ
بْ لَ وِعَا ٓءِ أَخِيهِ ثُمّ َٱ سْتَخْرَجَهَا مِن و ِعَا ٓءِ أَخِيهِ ۚ كَذَٰ لِكَ كِدْ نَا لِيُوسُفَ ۖ مَا كَانَ لِيَأْخُذَ أَخَاهُ فِى دِينِٱ لْمَلِكِ إِلَّآ أَن ي َشَا ٓءَٱ للَّهُ ۚ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَٰ تٍ ۢم َّن ن َّشَا ٓءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِي مٌۭ ٧٦Fabadaa bi-awAAiyatihim qabla wiAAa-iakheehi thumma istakhrajaha min wiAAa-i akheehi kathalikakidna liyoosufa ma kana liya/khuthaakhahu fee deeni almaliki illa an yashaa AllahunarfaAAu darajatin man nashao wafawqa kulli theeAAilmin AAaleem
Then he began with their sacks, before [opening] his brother’s sack. Then he took it out from his brother’s sack. Thus did We devise for Joseph’s sake. He could not have held his brother under the king’s law unless Allah willed [otherwise]. We raise in rank whomever We please, and above every man of knowledge is One who knows best.Ali Quli Qarai
So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion [i.e., law] of the king except that Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.Saheeh International

12:77
۞ قَال
ُوٓ ا۟ إِن ي َسْرِقْ فَقَدْ سَرَقَ أَخٌ ۭل َّهُۥ مِن ق َبْ لُ ۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِى نَفْسِهِۦ وَلَمْ يُبْ دِهَا لَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ أَنت ُمْ شَرٌّ ۭم َّكَانً ۭا ۖ و َٱ للَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُو نَ ٧٧Qaloo in yasriq faqad saraqa akhunlahu min qablu faasarraha yoosufu fee nafsihi walam yubdihalahum qala antum sharrun makanan wallahuaAAlamu bima tasifoon
They said, ‘If he has stolen [there is no wonder]; a brother of his had stolen before.’ Thereupon Joseph kept the matter to himself and he did not disclose it to them. He said, ‘You are in a worse state! And Allah knows best what you allege.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."Saheeh International

12:78
قَالُو
ا۟ يَٰٓ أَيُّهَاٱ لْعَزِيزُ إِنّ َ لَهُۥٓ أَبً ۭا ش َيْخً ۭا ك َبِيرً ۭا ف َخُذْ أَحَدَنَا مَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖ إِنّ َا نَرَىٰ كَ مِنَٱ لْمُحْسِنِي نَ ٧٨Qaloo ya ayyuhaalAAazeezu inna lahu aban shaykhan kabeeran fakhuth ahadanamakanahu inna naraka mina almuhsineen
They said, ‘O emir! Indeed, he has a father, a very old man; so take one of us in his place. Indeed we see that you are a virtuous man.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "O ʿAzeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."Saheeh International

12:79
قَالَ مَعَاذَ
ٱ للَّهِ أَن ن َّأْخُذَ إِلَّا مَن و َجَدْ نَا مَتَٰ عَنَا عِند َهُۥٓ إِنّ َآ إِذً ۭا ل َّظَٰ لِمُو نَ ٧٩Qala maAAatha Allahi anna/khutha illa man wajadna mataAAanaAAindahu inna ithan lathalimoon
He said, ‘God forbid that we should detain anyone except him with whom we found our wares, for then we would indeed be wrongdoers.’Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."Saheeh International

12:80
فَلَ
مّ َاٱ سْتَئَْسُوا۟ مِنْهُ خَلَصُوا۟ نَجِيًّ ۭا ۖ ق َالَ كَبِيرُهُمْ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمُوٓ ا۟ أَنّ َ أَبَاكُمْ قَدْ أَخَذَ عَلَيْكُم م َّوْثِقً ۭا م ِّنَٱ للَّهِ وَمِن ق َبْ لُ مَا فَرَّطتُمْ فِى يُوسُفَ ۖ فَلَنْ أَبْ رَحَٱ لْأَرْضَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْذَنَ لِىٓ أَبِىٓ أَوْ يَحْكُمَٱ للَّهُ لِى ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُٱ لْحَٰ كِمِي نَ ٨٠Falamma istay-asoo minhu khalasoonajiyyan qala kabeeruhum alam taAAlamoo anna abakumqad akhatha AAalaykum mawthiqan mina Allahi waminqablu ma farrattum fee yoosufa falan abrahaal-arda hatta ya/thana lee abee aw yahkumaAllahu lee wahuwa khayru alhakimeen
When they had despaired of [moving] him, they withdrew to confer privately. The eldest of them said, ‘Don’t you know that your father has taken a [solemn] pledge from you by Allah, and earlier you have neglected your duty in regard to Joseph? So I will never leave this land until my father permits me, or Allah passes a judgement for me, and He is the best of judges.Ali Quli Qarai
So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allāh and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me, and He is the best of judges.Saheeh International

12:81
ٱرْجِع
ُوٓ ا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيكُمْ فَقُولُوا۟ يَٰٓ أَبَانَآ إِنّ َٱ بْ نَكَ سَرَقَ وَمَا شَهِدْ نَآ إِلَّا بِمَا عَلِمْنَا وَمَا كُنّ َا لِلْغَيْبِ حَٰ فِظِي نَ ٨١IrjiAAoo ila abeekum faqooloo yaabana inna ibnaka saraqa wama shahidnailla bima AAalimna wama kunnalilghaybi hafitheen
Go back to your father, and say, ‘‘Father! Your son has indeed committed theft, and we testified only to what we knew, and we could not have forestalled the unseen.Ali Quli Qarai
Return to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen.Saheeh International

12:82
وَسَْٔلِ
ٱ لْقَرْيَةَٱ لَّتِى كُنّ َا فِيهَا وَٱ لْعِيرَٱ لَّتِىٓ أَقْ بَلْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَإِنّ َا لَصَٰ دِقُو نَ ٨٢Was-ali alqaryata allatee kunnafeeha walAAeera allatee aqbalna feehawa-inna lasadiqoon
Ask [the people of] the town we were in, and the caravan with which we came. We indeed speak the truth.’’ ’Ali Quli Qarai
And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful.'"Saheeh International

12:83
قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَ
نف ُسُكُمْ أَمْرً ۭا ۖ ف َصَبْ رٌ ۭج َمِيلٌ ۖ عَسَىٱ للَّهُ أَن ي َأْتِيَنِى بِهِمْ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنّ َهُۥ هُوَٱ لْعَلِيمُٱ لْحَكِي مُ ٨٣Qala bal sawwalat lakum anfusukumamran fasabrun jameelun AAasa Allahu anya/tiyanee bihim jameeAAan innahu huwa alAAaleemu alhakeem
He said, ‘No, your souls have made a matter seem decorous to you. Yet patience is graceful. Maybe Allah will bring them all [back] to me. Indeed He is the All-knowing, the All-wise.’Ali Quli Qarai
[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allāh will bring them to me all together. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise."Saheeh International

12:84
وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَ
ٰٓ أَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَٱ بْ يَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَٱ لْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِي مٌۭ ٨٤Watawalla AAanhum waqala yaasafa AAala yoosufa wabyaddat AAaynahumina alhuzni fahuwa katheem
He turned away from them and said, ‘Alas for Joseph!’ His eyes had turned white with grief, and he choked with suppressed agony.Ali Quli Qarai
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.Saheeh International

12:85
قَالُو
ا۟ تَٱ للَّهِ تَفْتَؤُا۟ تَذْكُرُ يُوسُفَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا أَوْ تَكُونَ مِنَٱ لْهَٰ لِكِي نَ ٨٥Qaloo tallahi taftaotathkuru yoosufa hatta takoona haradanaw takoona mina alhalikeen
They said, ‘By Allah! You will go on remembering Joseph until you wreck your health or perish.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "By Allāh, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."Saheeh International

12:86
قَالَ إِ
نّ َمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَىٱ للَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَٱ للَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُو نَ ٨٦Qala innama ashkoo baththee wahuzneeila Allahi waaAAlamu mina Allahi ma lataAAlamoon
He said, ‘I complain of my anguish and grief only to Allah. I know from Allah what you do not know.’Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.Saheeh International

12:87
يَ
ٰ بَنِىَّٱ ذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن ي ُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟ ئَْسُوا۟ مِن ر َّوْحِٱ للَّهِ ۖ إِنّ َهُۥ لَا يَا۟ ئَْسُ مِن ر َّوْحِٱ للَّهِ إِلَّاٱ لْقَوْمُٱ لْكَٰ فِرُو نَ ٨٧Ya baniyya ithhaboo fatahassasoomin yoosufa waakheehi wala tay-asoo min rawhi Allahiinnahu la yay-asu min rawhi Allahi illaalqawmu alkafiroon
‘Go, my sons, and look for Joseph and his brother, and do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed no one despairs of Allah’s mercy except the faithless lot.’Ali Quli Qarai
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allāh. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allāh except the disbelieving people."Saheeh International

12:88
فَلَ
مّ َا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓ أَيُّهَاٱ لْعَزِيزُ مَسَّنَا وَأَهْلَنَاٱ ل ضُّرُّ وَجِئْنَا بِبِضَٰ عَةٍ ۢم ُّزْجَىٰ ةٍ ۢف َأَوْفِ لَنَاٱ لْكَيْلَ وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنّ َٱ للَّهَ يَجْ زِىٱ لْمُتَصَدِّقِي نَ ٨٨Falamma dakhaloo AAalayhi qalooya ayyuha alAAazeezu massana waahlanaaddurru waji/na bibidaAAatin muzjatinfaawfi lana alkayla watasaddaq AAalayna innaAllaha yajzee almutasaddiqeen
Then, when they entered into his presence, they said, ‘O emir! Distress has befallen us and our family, and we have brought [just] a meagre sum. Yet grant us the full measure, and be charitable to us! Indeed Allah rewards the charitable.’Ali Quli Qarai
So when they entered upon him [i.e., Joseph], they said, "O ʿAzeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allāh rewards the charitable."Saheeh International

12:89
قَالَ هَلْ عَلِمْت
ُم م َّا فَعَلْتُم ب ِيُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ إِذْ أَنت ُمْ جَٰ هِلُو نَ ٨٩Qala hal AAalimtum mafaAAaltum biyoosufa waakheehi ith antum jahiloon
He said, ‘Have you realized what you did to Joseph and his brother, when you were senseless?’Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?"Saheeh International

12:90
قَال
ُوٓ ا۟ أَءِنّ َكَ لَأَنت َ يُوسُفُ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ يُوسُفُ وَهَٰ ذَآ أَخِى ۖ قَدْ مَنّ َٱ للَّهُ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنّ َهُۥ مَن ي َتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنّ َٱ للَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْ رَٱ لْمُحْسِنِي نَ ٩٠Qaloo a-innaka laanta yoosufa qalaana yoosufu wahatha akhee qad manna AllahuAAalayna innahu man yattaqi wayasbir fa-inna Allahala yudeeAAu ajra almuhsineen
They said, ‘Are you really Joseph?!’ He said, ‘I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Certainly Allah has shown us favour. Indeed if one is Godwary and patient Allah does not waste the reward of the virtuous.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said, "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allāh has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allāh and is patient, then indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."Saheeh International

12:91
قَالُو
ا۟ تَٱ للَّهِ لَقَدْ ءَاثَرَكَٱ للَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَإِن ك ُنّ َا لَخَٰ طِِٔي نَ ٩١Qaloo tallahi laqad atharakaAllahu AAalayna wa-in kunna lakhati-een
They said, ‘By Allah, Allah has certainly preferred you over us, and we have indeed been erring.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "By Allāh, certainly has Allāh preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners."Saheeh International
-
12:92
قَالَ لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ
ٱ لْيَوْمَ ۖ يَغْفِرُٱ للَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُٱ ل رَّٰ حِمِي نَ ٩٢Qala la tathreeba AAalaykumualyawma yaghfiru Allahu lakum wahuwa arhamu arrahimeen
He said, ‘There shall be no reproach on you today. Allah will forgive you, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allāh forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.Saheeh International

12:93
ٱذْهَبُو
ا۟ بِقَمِيصِى هَٰ ذَا فَأَلْقُوهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْ هِ أَبِى يَأْتِ بَصِيرً ۭا و َأْتُونِى بِأَهْلِكُمْ أَجْ مَعِي نَ ٩٣Ithhaboo biqameesee hathafaalqoohu AAala wajhi abee ya/ti baseeran wa/tooneebi-ahlikum ajmaAAeen
Take this shirt of mine, and cast it upon my father’s face; he will regain his sight, and bring me all your folks.’Ali Quli Qarai
Take this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together."Saheeh International

12:94
وَلَ
مّ َا فَصَلَتِٱ لْعِيرُ قَالَ أَبُوهُمْ إِنّ ِى لَأَجِدُ رِيحَ يُوسُفَ ۖ لَوْلَآ أَن ت ُفَنّ ِدُو نِ ٩٤Walamma fasalati alAAeeru qalaaboohum innee laajidu reeha yoosufa lawla antufannidoon
As the caravan set off, their father said, ‘I sense the scent of Joseph, if you will not consider me a dotard.’Ali Quli Qarai
And when the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father said, "Indeed, I find the smell of Joseph [and would say that he was alive] if you did not think me weakened in mind."Saheeh International

12:95
قَالُو
ا۟ تَٱ للَّهِ إِنّ َكَ لَفِى ضَلَٰ لِكَٱ لْقَدِي مِ ٩٥Qaloo tallahi innakalafee dalalika alqadeem
They said, ‘By God, you persist in your inveterate error.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "By Allāh, indeed you are in your [same] old error."Saheeh International
-
12:96
فَلَ
مّ َآ أَن ج َا ٓءَٱ لْبَشِيرُ أَلْقَىٰ هُ عَلَىٰ وَجْ هِهِۦ فَٱ رْتَدَّ بَصِيرً ۭا ۖ ق َالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنّ ِىٓ أَعْلَمُ مِنَٱ للَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُو نَ ٩٦Falamma an jaa albasheeru alqahuAAala wajhihi fartadda baseeran qalaalam aqul lakum innee aAAlamu mina Allahi ma lataAAlamoon
When the bearer of good news arrived, he cast it on his face, and he regained his sight. He said, ‘Did I not tell you, ‘‘I know from Allah what you do not know?’’ ’Ali Quli Qarai
And when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing. He said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allāh that which you do not know?"Saheeh International
-
12:97
قَالُو
ا۟ يَٰٓ أَبَانَاٱ سْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَآ إِنّ َا كُنّ َا خَٰ طِِٔي نَ ٩٧Qaloo ya abanaistaghfir lana thunoobana inna kunnakhati-een
They said, ‘Father! Plead [with Allah] for forgiveness of our sins! We have indeed been erring.’Ali Quli Qarai
They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners."Saheeh International
-
12:98
قَالَ سَوْفَ أَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكُمْ رَبّ
ِىٓ ۖ إِنّ َهُۥ هُوَٱ لْغَفُورُٱ ل رَّحِي مُ ٩٨Qala sawfa astaghfiru lakum rabbeeinnahu huwa alghafooru arraheem
He said, ‘I shall plead with my Lord to forgive you; indeed He is the All-forgiving, the All-merciful.’Ali Quli Qarai
He said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."Saheeh International

12:99
فَلَ
مّ َا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ ءَاوَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَبَوَيْهِ وَقَالَٱ دْ خُلُوا۟ مِصْرَ إِن ش َا ٓءَٱ للَّهُ ءَامِنِي نَ ٩٩Falamma dakhaloo AAala yoosufaawa ilayhi abawayhi waqala odkhuloo misrain shaa Allahu amineen
When they entered into the presence of Joseph, he set his parents close to himself, and said, ‘Welcome to Egypt, in safety, God willing!’Ali Quli Qarai
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself [i.e., embraced them] and said, "Enter Egypt, Allāh willing, safe [and secure]."Saheeh International
-
12:100
وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيْهِ عَلَى
ٱ لْعَرْشِ وَخَرُّوا۟ لَهُۥ سُجَّدً ۭا ۖ و َقَالَ يَٰٓ أَبَتِ هَٰ ذَا تَأْوِيلُ رُءْيَٰ ىَ مِن ق َبْ لُ قَدْ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّى حَقًّ ۭا ۖ و َقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِىٓ إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِى مِنَٱ ل سِّجْ نِ وَجَا ٓءَ بِكُم م ِّنَٱ لْبَدْ وِ مِنۢ ب َعْدِ أَن ن َّزَغَٱ ل شَّيْطَٰ نُ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَ إِخْوَتِىٓ ۚ إِنّ َ رَبِّى لَطِيفٌ ۭل ِّمَا يَشَا ٓءُ ۚ إِنّ َهُۥ هُوَٱ لْعَلِيمُٱ لْحَكِي مُ ١٠٠WarafaAAa abawayhi AAala alAAarshiwakharroo lahu sujjadan waqala ya abati hathata/weelu ru/yaya min qablu qad jaAAalaha rabbee haqqanwaqad ahsana bee ith akhrajanee mina assijniwajaa bikum mina albadwi min baAAdi an nazagha ashshaytanubaynee wabayna ikhwatee inna rabbee lateefun limayashao innahu huwa alAAaleemu alhakeem
And he seated his parents high upon the throne, and they fell down prostrate before him. He said, ‘Father! This is the fulfillment of my dream of long ago, which my Lord has made come true. He was certainly gracious to me when He brought me out of the prison and brought you over from the desert after that Satan had incited ill feeling between me and my brothers. Indeed my Lord is all-attentive in bringing about what He wishes. Indeed He is the All-knowing, the All-wise.’Ali Quli Qarai
And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.Saheeh International

12:101
۞ رَبِّ قَ
دْ ءَاتَيْتَنِى مِنَٱ لْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِى مِن ت َأْوِيلِٱ لْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَٱ ل سَّمَٰ وَٰ تِ وَٱ لْأَرْضِ أَنت َ وَلِىِّۦ فِىٱ ل دُّنْيَا وَٱ لَْٔاخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِى مُسْلِمً ۭا و َأَلْحِقْ نِى بِٱ ل صَّٰ لِحِي نَ ١٠١Rabbi qad ataytanee mina almulkiwaAAallamtanee min ta/weeli al-ahadeethi fatira assamawatiwal-ardi anta waliyyee fee addunyawal-akhirati tawaffanee musliman waalhiqneebissaliheen
‘My Lord! You have granted me a share in the kingdom, and taught me the interpretation of dreams. Originator of the heavens and earth! You are my guardian in this world and the Hereafter! Let my death be in submission [to You], and unite me with the Righteous.’Ali Quli Qarai
My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."Saheeh International

12:102
ذَ
ٰ لِكَ مِنْ أَنۢب َا ٓءِٱ لْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنت َ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْ مَعُوٓ ا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُو نَ ١٠٢Thalika min anba-i alghaybinooheehi ilayka wama kunta ladayhim ithajmaAAoo amrahum wahum yamkuroon
These are accounts from the Unseen, which We reveal to you, and you were not with them when they conspired together and schemed.Ali Quli Qarai
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muḥammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.Saheeh International
-
12:103
وَم
َآ أَكْثَرُٱ ل نّ َاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِي نَ ١٠٣Wama aktharu annasiwalaw harasta bimu/mineen
Yet most people will not have faith, however eager you should be.Ali Quli Qarai
And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.Saheeh International
-
12:104
وَمَا تَسَْٔلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَ
جْ رٍ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ ۭل ِّلْعَٰ لَمِي نَ ١٠٤Wama tas-aluhum AAalayhi min ajrinin huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameen
You do not ask them any reward for it: it is just a reminder for all the nations.Ali Quli Qarai
And you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds.Saheeh International
-
12:105
وَكَأَيّ
ِن م ِّنْ ءَايَةٍ ۢف ِىٱ ل سَّمَٰ وَٰ تِ وَٱ لْأَرْضِ يَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضُو نَ ١٠٥Wakaayyin min ayatin fee assamawatiwal-ardi yamurroona AAalayha wahum AAanhamuAAridoon
How many a sign there is in the heavens and the earth that they pass by while they are disregardful of it!Ali Quli Qarai
And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.Saheeh International
-
12:106
وَمَا يُؤْمِنُ أَكْثَرُه
ُم ب ِٱ للَّهِ إِلَّا وَهُم م ُّشْرِكُو نَ ١٠٦Wama yu/minu aktharuhum billahiilla wahum mushrikoon
And most of them do not believe in Allah without ascribing partners to Him.Ali Quli Qarai
And most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.Saheeh International
-
12:107
أَفَأَمِن
ُوٓ ا۟ أَن ت َأْتِيَهُمْ غَٰ شِيَةٌ ۭم ِّنْ عَذَابِٱ للَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُٱ ل سَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةً ۭو َهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُو نَ ١٠٧Afaaminoo an ta/tiyahum ghashiyatunmin AAathabi Allahi aw ta/tiyahumu assaAAatubaghtatan wahum la yashAAuroon
Do they feel secure from being overtaken by a blanket punishment from Allah, or being overtaken by the Hour, suddenly, while they are unaware?Ali Quli Qarai
Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allāh or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?Saheeh International
-
12:108
قُلْ هَ
ٰ ذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدْ عُوٓ ا۟ إِلَىٱ للَّهِ ۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِٱ تَّبَعَنِى ۖ وَسُبْ حَٰ نَٱ للَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَٱ لْمُشْرِكِي نَ ١٠٨Qul hathihi sabeelee adAAoo ilaAllahi AAala baseeratin ana wamaniittabaAAanee wasubhana Allahi wama anamina almushrikeen
Say, ‘This is my way. I summon to Allah with insight—I and he who follows me. Immaculate is Allah, and I am not one of the polytheists.’Ali Quli Qarai
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allāh with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allāh; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."Saheeh International
-
12:109
وَم
َآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن ق َبْ لِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالً ۭان ُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِم م ِّنْ أَهْلِٱ لْقُرَىٰٓ ۗ أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِىٱ لْأَرْضِ فَيَنظ ُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰ قِبَةُٱ لَّذِينَ مِن ق َبْ لِهِمْ ۗ وَلَدَارُٱ لَْٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌ ۭل ِّلَّذِينَٱ تَّقَوْا۟ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُو نَ ١٠٩Wama arsalna min qablika illarijalan noohee ilayhim min ahli alquraafalam yaseeroo fee al-ardi fayanthurookayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihimwaladaru al-akhirati khayrun lillatheenaittaqaw afala taAAqiloon
We did not send [any apostles] before you except as men from among the people of the towns, to whom We revealed. Have they not travelled over the land so that they may observe how was the fate of those who were before them? And the abode of the Hereafter is surely better for those who are Godwary. Do you not exercise your reason?Ali Quli Qarai
And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh; then will you not reason?Saheeh International
-
12:110
حَتَّ
ىٰٓ إِذَاٱ سْتَئَْسَٱ ل رُّسُلُ وَظَنّ ُوٓ ا۟ أَنّ َهُمْ قَدْ كُذِبُوا۟ جَا ٓءَهُمْ نَصْرُنَا فَنُجِّىَ مَن ن َّشَا ٓءُ ۖ وَلَا يُرَدُّ بَأْسُنَا عَنِٱ لْقَوْمِٱ لْمُجْ رِمِي نَ ١١٠Hatta itha istay-asa arrusuluwathannoo annahum qad kuthiboo jaahumnasruna fanujjiya man nashao walayuraddu ba/suna AAani alqawmi almujrimeen
When the apostles lost hope and they thought that they had been told lies, Our help came to them, and We delivered whomever We wished, and Our punishment will not be averted from the guilty lot.Ali Quli Qarai
[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.Saheeh International
-
12:111
لَقَ
دْ كَانَ فِى قَصَصِهِمْ عِبْ رَةٌ ۭل ِّأُو۟ لِىٱ لْأَلْبَٰ بِ ۗ مَا كَانَ حَدِيثً ۭا ي ُفْتَرَىٰ وَلَٰ كِن ت َصْدِيقَٱ لَّذِى بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ ۢو َهُدً ۭى و َرَحْمَةً ۭل ِّقَوْمٍ ۢي ُؤْمِنُو نَ ١١١Laqad kana fee qasasihimAAibratun li-olee al-albabi ma kana hadeethanyuftara walakin tasdeeqa allatheebayna yadayhi watafseela kulli shay-in wahudan warahmatanliqawmin yu/minoon
