بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
20:1
طه ١
Ta-ha
QaraiTa Ha!
Saheeh InternationalṬā, Hā.
-
20:2
مَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِتَشْقَىٰٓ ٢
Ma anzalna AAalayka alqur-analitashqa
QaraiWe did not send down to you the Quran that you should be miserable,
Saheeh InternationalWe have not sent down to you the Qur’ān that you be distressed
-
20:3
إِلَّا تَذْكِرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ ٣
Illa tathkiratan liman yakhsha
Qaraibut only as an admonition to him who fears [his Lord].
Saheeh InternationalBut only as a reminder for those who fear [Allāh] -
-
20:4
تَنزِيلًا مِّمَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ ٱلْعُلَى ٤
Tanzeelan mimman khalaqa al-arda wassamawatialAAula
QaraiA sending down [of the Revelation] from Him who created the earth and the lofty heavens
Saheeh InternationalA revelation from He who created the earth and highest heavens,
-
20:5
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ ٥
Arrahmanu AAalaalAAarshi istawa
Qarai—the All-beneficent, settled on the Throne.
Saheeh InternationalThe Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.
-
20:6
لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَمَا تَحْتَ ٱلثَّرَىٰ ٦
Lahu ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi wama baynahuma wamatahta aththara
QaraiTo Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and whatever is between them, and whatever is under the ground.
Saheeh InternationalTo Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth and what is between them and what is under the soil.
-
20:7
وَإِن تَجْهَرْ بِٱلْقَوْلِ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ وَأَخْفَى ٧
Wa-in tajhar bilqawli fa-innahuyaAAlamu assirra waakhfa
QaraiWhether you speak loudly [or in secret tones,] He indeed knows the secret and what is still more hidden.
Saheeh InternationalAnd if you speak aloud - then indeed, He knows the secret and what is [even] more hidden.
-
20:8
ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ لَهُ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ٨
Allahu la ilaha illahuwa lahu al-asmao alhusna
QaraiAllah—there is no god except Him—to Him belong the Best Names.
Saheeh InternationalAllāh - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.
-
20:9
وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ ٩
Wahal ataka hadeethu moosa
QaraiDid the story of Moses come to you,
Saheeh InternationalAnd has the story of Moses reached you? -
-
20:10
إِذْ رَءَا نَارًا فَقَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ ٱمْكُثُوٓا۟ إِنِّىٓ ءَانَسْتُ نَارًا لَّعَلِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم مِّنْهَا بِقَبَسٍ أَوْ أَجِدُ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ هُدًى ١٠
Ith raa naran faqalali-ahlihi omkuthoo innee anastu naran laAAallee ateekumminha biqabasin aw ajidu AAala annarihuda
Qaraiwhen he sighted a fire, and said to his family, ‘Wait! Indeed, I descry a fire! Maybe I will bring you a brand from it, or find some guidance at the fire.’
Saheeh InternationalWhen he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance."

20:11
فَلَمَّآ أَتَىٰهَا نُودِىَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ ١١
Falamma ataha noodiya yamoosa
QaraiSo when he came to it, he was called, ‘O Moses!
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses,
-
20:12
إِنِّىٓ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكَ فَٱخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ ۖ إِنَّكَ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى ١٢
Innee ana rabbuka fakhlaAAnaAAlayka innaka bilwadi almuqaddasi tuwa
QaraiIndeed I am your Lord! So take off your sandals. You are indeed in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the blessed valley of Ṭuwā.
-
20:13
وَأَنَا ٱخْتَرْتُكَ فَٱسْتَمِعْ لِمَا يُوحَىٰٓ ١٣
Waana ikhtartuka fastamiAAlima yooha
QaraiI have chosen you; so listen to what is revealed.
Saheeh InternationalAnd I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
-
20:14
إِنَّنِىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدْنِى وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ ١٤
Innanee ana Allahu lailaha illa ana faAAbudnee waaqimi assalatalithikree
QaraiIndeed I am Allah—there is no god except Me. So worship Me, and maintain the prayer for My remembrance.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
-
20:15
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ ءَاتِيَةٌ أَكَادُ أُخْفِيهَا لِتُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا تَسْعَىٰ ١٥
Inna assaAAata atiyatunakadu okhfeeha litujza kullu nafsin bimatasAAa
QaraiIndeed the Hour is bound to come: I will have it hidden, so that every soul may be rewarded for its endeavour.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.
-
20:16
فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا مَن لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِهَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ فَتَرْدَىٰ ١٦
Fala yasuddannaka AAanhaman la yu/minu biha wattabaAAa hawahufatarda
QaraiSo do not let yourself be distracted from it by those who do not believe in it and who follow their desires, or you will perish.’
Saheeh InternationalSo do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
-
20:17
وَمَا تِلْكَ بِيَمِينِكَ يَٰمُوسَىٰ ١٧
Wama tilka biyameenika ya moosa
Qarai‘Moses, what is that in your right hand?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
-
20:18
قَالَ هِىَ عَصَاىَ أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ عَلَيْهَا وَأَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلَىٰ غَنَمِى وَلِىَ فِيهَا مََٔارِبُ أُخْرَىٰ ١٨
Qala hiya AAasaya atawakkaoAAalayha waahushshu biha AAala ghanameewaliya feeha maaribu okhra
QaraiHe said, ‘It is my staff. I lean on it, and with it I beat down leaves for my sheep; and I have other uses for it.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
-
20:19
قَالَ أَلْقِهَا يَٰمُوسَىٰ ١٩
Qala alqiha ya moosa
QaraiHe said, ‘Moses, throw it down.’
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
-
20:20
فَأَلْقَىٰهَا فَإِذَا هِىَ حَيَّةٌ تَسْعَىٰ ٢٠
Faalqaha fa-itha hiya hayyatuntasAAa
QaraiSo he threw it down, and behold, it was a snake, moving swiftly.
Saheeh InternationalSo he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.
-
20:21
قَالَ خُذْهَا وَلَا تَخَفْ ۖ سَنُعِيدُهَا سِيرَتَهَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ ٢١
Qala khuthha walatakhaf sanuAAeeduha seerataha al-oola
QaraiHe said, ‘Take hold of it, and do not fear. We will restore it to its former state.
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition.
-
20:22
وَٱضْمُمْ يَدَكَ إِلَىٰ جَنَاحِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَآءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوٓءٍ ءَايَةً أُخْرَىٰ ٢٢
Wadmum yadaka ila janahikatakhruj baydaa min ghayri soo-in ayatan okhra
QaraiNow clasp your hand to your armpit: it will emerge white, without any harm—[this is yet] another sign,
Saheeh InternationalAnd draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign,
-
20:23
لِنُرِيَكَ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِنَا ٱلْكُبْرَى ٢٣
Linuriyaka min ayatinaalkubra
Qaraithat We may show you some of Our great signs.
Saheeh InternationalThat We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.
-
20:24
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ٢٤
Ithhab ila firAAawna innahu tagha
QaraiGo to Pharaoh. He has indeed rebelled.’
Saheeh InternationalGo to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed [i.e., tyrannized]."
-
20:25
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱشْرَحْ لِى صَدْرِى ٢٥
Qala rabbi ishrah lee sadree
QaraiHe said, ‘My Lord! Open my breast for me.
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "My Lord, expand [i.e., relax] for me my breast [with assurance]
-
20:26
وَيَسِّرْ لِىٓ أَمْرِى ٢٦
Wayassir lee amree
QaraiMake my task easy for me.
Saheeh InternationalAnd ease for me my task
-
20:27
وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِى ٢٧
Wahlul AAuqdatan min lisanee
QaraiRemove the hitch from my tongue,
Saheeh InternationalAnd untie the knot from my tongue
-
20:28
يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِى ٢٨
Yafqahoo qawlee
Qarai[so that] they may understand my speech.
Saheeh InternationalThat they may understand my speech.
-
20:29
وَٱجْعَل لِّى وَزِيرًا مِّنْ أَهْلِى ٢٩
WajAAal lee wazeeran min ahlee
QaraiAppoint for me a minister from my family,
Saheeh InternationalAnd appoint for me a minister [i.e., assistant] from my family -
-
20:30
هَٰرُونَ أَخِى ٣٠
Haroona akhee
QaraiAaron, my brother.
Saheeh InternationalAaron, my brother.
-
20:31
ٱشْدُدْ بِهِۦٓ أَزْرِى ٣١
Oshdud bihi azree
QaraiStrengthen my back through him,
Saheeh InternationalIncrease through him my strength
-
20:32
وَأَشْرِكْهُ فِىٓ أَمْرِى ٣٢
Waashrik-hu fee amree
Qaraiand make him my associate in my task,
Saheeh InternationalAnd let him share my task
-
20:33
كَىْ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِيرًا ٣٣
Kay nusabbihaka katheera
Qaraiso that we may glorify You greatly,
Saheeh InternationalThat we may exalt You much
-
20:34
وَنَذْكُرَكَ كَثِيرًا ٣٤
Wanathkuraka katheera
Qaraiand remember You greatly.
Saheeh InternationalAnd remember You much.
-
20:35
إِنَّكَ كُنتَ بِنَا بَصِيرًا ٣٥
Innaka kunta bina baseera
QaraiIndeed You see us best.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, You are of us ever Seeing."
-
20:36
قَالَ قَدْ أُوتِيتَ سُؤْلَكَ يَٰمُوسَىٰ ٣٦
Qala qad ooteeta su/laka yamoosa
QaraiHe said, ‘Moses, your request has been granted!
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.
-
20:37
وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَيْكَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَىٰٓ ٣٧
Walaqad mananna AAalayka marratanokhra
QaraiCertainly, We have done you a favour another time,
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had already conferred favor upon you another time,
-
20:38
إِذْ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّكَ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ ٣٨
Ith awhayna ilaommika ma yooha
Qaraiwhen We revealed to your mother whatever was to be revealed:
Saheeh InternationalWhen We inspired to your mother what We inspired,
-
20:39
أَنِ ٱقْذِفِيهِ فِى ٱلتَّابُوتِ فَٱقْذِفِيهِ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ فَلْيُلْقِهِ ٱلْيَمُّ بِٱلسَّاحِلِ يَأْخُذْهُ عَدُوٌّ لِّى وَعَدُوٌّ لَّهُۥ ۚ وَأَلْقَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَحَبَّةً مِّنِّى وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَىٰ عَيْنِىٓ ٣٩
Ani iqthifeehi fee attabootifaqthifeehi fee alyammi falyulqihi alyammu bissahiliya/khuthhu AAaduwwun lee waAAaduwwun lahu waalqaytuAAalayka mahabbatan minnee walitusnaAAa AAalaAAaynee
Qarai“Put him in the casket, and cast it into the river. Then the river will cast it on the bank, and he shall be picked up by an enemy of Mine and an enemy of his.” And I made you endearing, and that you might be reared under My [watchful] eyes.
Saheeh International[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].

20:40
إِذْ تَمْشِىٓ أُخْتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن يَكْفُلُهُۥ ۖ فَرَجَعْنَٰكَ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّكَ كَىْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ ۚ وَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا فَنَجَّيْنَٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَمِّ وَفَتَنَّٰكَ فُتُونًا ۚ فَلَبِثْتَ سِنِينَ فِىٓ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ ثُمَّ جِئْتَ عَلَىٰ قَدَرٍ يَٰمُوسَىٰ ٤٠
Ith tamshee okhtuka fataqoolu haladullukum AAala man yakfuluhu farajaAAnaka ilaommika kay taqarra AAaynuha wala tahzanawaqatalta nafsan fanajjaynaka mina alghammi wafatannakafutoonan falabithta sineena fee ahli madyana thumma ji/ta AAalaqadarin ya moosa
QaraiWhen your sister walked up [to Pharaoh’s palace] saying, “Shall I show you someone who will take care of him?” Then We restored you to your mother, that she might not grieve and be comforted. Then you slew a soul, whereupon We delivered you from anguish, and We tried you with various ordeals. Then you stayed for several years among the people of Midian. Then you turned up as ordained, O Moses!
Saheeh International[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
-
20:41
وَٱصْطَنَعْتُكَ لِنَفْسِى ٤١
WastanaAAtuka linafsee
QaraiAnd I chose you for Myself.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd I produced you for Myself.
-
20:42
ٱذْهَبْ أَنتَ وَأَخُوكَ بَِٔايَٰتِى وَلَا تَنِيَا فِى ذِكْرِى ٤٢
Ithhab anta waakhooka bi-ayateewala taniya fee thikree
Qarai‘Go ahead, you and your brother, with My signs and do not flag in My remembrance.
Saheeh InternationalGo, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.
-
20:43
ٱذْهَبَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ٤٣
Ithhaba ila firAAawnainnahu tagha
QaraiBoth of you go to Pharaoh, for he has indeed rebelled.
Saheeh InternationalGo, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
-
20:44
فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوْلًا لَّيِّنًا لَّعَلَّهُۥ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَىٰ ٤٤
Faqoola lahu qawlan layyinanlaAAallahu yatathakkaru aw yakhsha
QaraiSpeak to him in a soft manner; maybe he will take admonition or fear.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."
-
20:45
قَالَا رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَآ أَوْ أَن يَطْغَىٰ ٤٥
Qala rabbana innananakhafu an yafruta AAalayna aw an yatgha
QaraiThey said, ‘Our Lord! We are indeed afraid that he will forestall us or will exceed all bounds.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress."
-
20:46
قَالَ لَا تَخَافَآ ۖ إِنَّنِى مَعَكُمَآ أَسْمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ ٤٦
Qala la takhafainnanee maAAakuma asmaAAu waara
QaraiHe said, ‘Do not be afraid, for I will be with the two of you, hearing and seeing [whatever happens].
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.
-
20:47
فَأْتِيَاهُ فَقُولَآ إِنَّا رَسُولَا رَبِّكَ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَلَا تُعَذِّبْهُمْ ۖ قَدْ جِئْنَٰكَ بَِٔايَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۖ وَٱلسَّلَٰمُ عَلَىٰ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ٤٧
Fa/tiyahu faqoola innarasoola rabbika faarsil maAAana banee isra-eelawala tuAAaththibhum qad ji/naka bi-ayatinmin rabbika wassalamu AAala mani ittabaAAaalhuda
QaraiSo approach him and say, ‘‘We are the apostles of your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go with us, and do not torture them! We certainly bring you a sign from your Lord, and may peace be upon him who follows guidance!
Saheeh InternationalSo go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace will be upon he who follows the guidance.
-
20:48
إِنَّا قَدْ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْنَآ أَنَّ ٱلْعَذَابَ عَلَىٰ مَن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ٤٨
Inna qad oohiya ilaynaanna alAAathaba AAala man kaththaba watawalla
QaraiIndeed it has been revealed to us that punishment shall befall those who impugn us and turn their backs [on us].’’ ’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.'"
-
20:49
قَالَ فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا يَٰمُوسَىٰ ٤٩
Qala faman rabbukuma yamoosa
QaraiHe said, ‘Who is your Lord, Moses?’
Saheeh International[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"
-
20:50
قَالَ رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَعْطَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلْقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ ٥٠
Qala rabbuna allatheeaAAta kulla shay-in khalqahu thumma hada
QaraiHe said, ‘Our Lord is He who gave everything its creation and then guided it.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."
-
20:51
قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ ٱلْقُرُونِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ٥١
Qala fama balualqurooni al-oola
QaraiHe said, ‘What about the former generations?’
Saheeh International[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"
-
20:52
قَالَ عِلْمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّى فِى كِتَٰبٍ ۖ لَّا يَضِلُّ رَبِّى وَلَا يَنسَى ٥٢
Qala AAilmuha AAinda rabbeefee kitabin la yadillu rabbee walayansa
QaraiHe said, ‘Their knowledge is with my Lord, in a Book. My Lord neither makes any error nor forgets.’
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."
-
20:53
ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ مَهْدًا وَسَلَكَ لَكُمْ فِيهَا سُبُلًا وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّن نَّبَاتٍ شَتَّىٰ ٥٣
Allathee jaAAala lakumu al-ardamahdan wasalaka lakum feeha subulan waanzala mina assama-imaan faakhrajna bihi azwajan min nabatinshatta
QaraiHe, who made the earth for you a cradle, and in it threaded for you ways, and sent down water from the sky, and with it We brought forth various kinds of vegetation.
Saheeh International[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.
-
20:54
كُلُوا۟ وَٱرْعَوْا۟ أَنْعَٰمَكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لََٔايَٰتٍ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلنُّهَىٰ ٥٤
Kuloo warAAaw anAAamakum innafee thalika laayatin li-olee annuha
Qarai‘Eat and pasture your cattle.’ There are indeed signs in that for those who have sense.
Saheeh InternationalEat [therefrom] and pasture your livestock. Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.

20:55
۞ مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ وَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْ وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً أُخْرَىٰ ٥٥
Minha khalaqnakum wafeehanuAAeedukum waminha nukhrijukum taratan okhra
QaraiFrom it did We create you, into it shall We return you, and from it shall We bring you forth another time.
Saheeh InternationalFrom it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.
-
20:56
وَلَقَدْ أَرَيْنَٰهُ ءَايَٰتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَأَبَىٰ ٥٦
Walaqad araynahu ayatinakullaha fakaththaba waaba
QaraiCertainly We showed him all Our signs. But he denied [them] and refused [to believe them].
Saheeh InternationalAnd We certainly showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] Our signs - all of them - but he denied and refused.
-
20:57
قَالَ أَجِئْتَنَا لِتُخْرِجَنَا مِنْ أَرْضِنَا بِسِحْرِكَ يَٰمُوسَىٰ ٥٧
Qala aji/tana litukhrijanamin ardina bisihrika ya moosa
QaraiHe said, ‘Moses, have you come to us to expel us from our land with your magic?
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?
-
20:58
فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّكَ بِسِحْرٍ مِّثْلِهِۦ فَٱجْعَلْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ مَوْعِدًا لَّا نُخْلِفُهُۥ نَحْنُ وَلَآ أَنتَ مَكَانًا سُوًى ٥٨
Falana/tiyannaka bisihrin mithlihi fajAAalbaynana wabaynaka mawAAidan la nukhlifuhu nahnuwala anta makanan suwa
QaraiYet we [too] will bring you a magic like it! So fix a tryst between us and you, which neither we shall fail nor you, at a middle place.’
Saheeh InternationalThen we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which we will not fail to keep and neither will you, in a place assigned."

20:59
قَالَ مَوْعِدُكُمْ يَوْمُ ٱلزِّينَةِ وَأَن يُحْشَرَ ٱلنَّاسُ ضُحًى ٥٩
Qala mawAAidukum yawmu azzeenatiwaan yuhshara annasu duha
QaraiHe said, ‘Your tryst shall be the Day of Adornment, and let the people be assembled in early forenoon.’
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."

20:60
فَتَوَلَّىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ فَجَمَعَ كَيْدَهُۥ ثُمَّ أَتَىٰ ٦٠
Fatawalla firAAawnu fajamaAAa kaydahuthumma ata
QaraiThen Pharaoh withdrew [to consult privately], summoned up his guile, and then arrived [at the scene of the contest].
Saheeh InternationalSo Pharaoh went away, put together his plan, and then came [to Moses].
-
20:61
قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ وَيْلَكُمْ لَا تَفْتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا فَيُسْحِتَكُم بِعَذَابٍ ۖ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ ٦١
Qala lahum moosa waylakum lataftaroo AAala Allahi kathiban fayushitakumbiAAathabin waqad khaba mani iftara
QaraiMoses said to them, ‘Woe to you! Do not fabricate lies against Allah, or He will obliterate you with a punishment. Whoever fabricates lies certainly fails.’
Saheeh InternationalMoses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allāh or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."

20:62
فَتَنَٰزَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُم بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ ٦٢
FatanazaAAoo amrahum baynahumwaasarroo annajwa
QaraiSo they disputed their matter among themselves, and kept their confidential talks secret.
Saheeh InternationalSo they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.

20:63
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَٰذَٰنِ لَسَٰحِرَٰنِ يُرِيدَانِ أَن يُخْرِجَاكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُم بِسِحْرِهِمَا وَيَذْهَبَا بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ ٱلْمُثْلَىٰ ٦٣
Qaloo in hathani lasahiraniyureedani an yukhrijakum min ardikum bisihrihimawayathhaba bitareeqatikumu almuthla
QaraiThey said, ‘These two are indeed magicians who intend to expel you from your land with their magic, and to abolish your excellent tradition!
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].

20:64
فَأَجْمِعُوا۟ كَيْدَكُمْ ثُمَّ ٱئْتُوا۟ صَفًّا ۚ وَقَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْيَوْمَ مَنِ ٱسْتَعْلَىٰ ٦٤
FaajmiAAoo kaydakum thumma i/too saffanwaqad aflaha alyawma mani istaAAla
QaraiSo summon up your ingenuity, then come in ranks. Today he who has the upper hand will be felicitous!’
Saheeh InternationalSo resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."

20:65
قَالُوا۟ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِمَّآ أَن تُلْقِىَ وَإِمَّآ أَن نَّكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ أَلْقَىٰ ٦٥
Qaloo ya moosa immaan tulqiya wa-imma an nakoona awwala man alqa
QaraiThey said, ‘O Moses! Will you throw first, or shall we?’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
-
20:66
قَالَ بَلْ أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ فَإِذَا حِبَالُهُمْ وَعِصِيُّهُمْ يُخَيَّلُ إِلَيْهِ مِن سِحْرِهِمْ أَنَّهَا تَسْعَىٰ ٦٦
Qala bal alqoo fa-itha hibaluhumwaAAisiyyuhum yukhayyalu ilayhi min sihrihim annahatasAAa
QaraiHe said, ‘No, you throw first.’ Thereupon, behold, their ropes and staffs appeared to him by their magic to wriggle swiftly.
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
-
20:67
فَأَوْجَسَ فِى نَفْسِهِۦ خِيفَةً مُّوسَىٰ ٦٧
Faawjasa fee nafsihi kheefatan moosa
QaraiThen Moses felt a fear within his heart.
Saheeh InternationalAnd he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
-
20:68
قُلْنَا لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ٦٨
Qulna la takhaf innaka antaal-aAAla
QaraiWe said, ‘Do not be afraid. Indeed, you will have the upper hand.
Saheeh InternationalWe [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
-
20:69
وَأَلْقِ مَا فِى يَمِينِكَ تَلْقَفْ مَا صَنَعُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّمَا صَنَعُوا۟ كَيْدُ سَٰحِرٍ ۖ وَلَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلسَّاحِرُ حَيْثُ أَتَىٰ ٦٩
Waalqi ma fee yameenika talqaf masanaAAoo innama sanaAAoo kaydu sahirinwala yuflihu assahiru haythuata
QaraiThrow down what is in your right hand, and it will swallow what they have conjured. What they have conjured is only a magician’s trick, and the magician does not fare well wherever he may show up.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."

20:70
فَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سُجَّدًا قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ هَٰرُونَ وَمُوسَىٰ ٧٠
Faolqiya assaharatu sujjadanqaloo amanna birabbi haroona wamoosa
QaraiThereat the magicians fell down prostrating. They said, ‘We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses!’
Saheeh InternationalSo the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."

20:71
قَالَ ءَامَنتُمْ لَهُۥ قَبْلَ أَنْ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحْرَ ۖ فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّنْ خِلَٰفٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ فِى جُذُوعِ ٱلنَّخْلِ وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ أَيُّنَآ أَشَدُّ عَذَابًا وَأَبْقَىٰ ٧١
Qala amantum lahu qabla an athanalakum innahu lakabeerukumu allathee AAallamakumu assihrafalaoqattiAAanna aydiyakum waarjulakum min khilafinwalaosallibannakum fee juthooAAi annakhliwalataAAlamunna ayyuna ashaddu AAathaban waabqa
QaraiHe said, ‘Did you believe in him before I should permit you? He is indeed your chief who has taught you magic! Surely, I will cut off your hands and feet from opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will know which of us can inflict a severer and more lasting punishment.’
Saheeh International[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."

20:72
قَالُوا۟ لَن نُّؤْثِرَكَ عَلَىٰ مَا جَآءَنَا مِنَ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَٱلَّذِى فَطَرَنَا ۖ فَٱقْضِ مَآ أَنتَ قَاضٍ ۖ إِنَّمَا تَقْضِى هَٰذِهِ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَآ ٧٢
Qaloo lan nu/thiraka AAala majaana mina albayyinati wallatheefatarana faqdi ma anta qadininnama taqdee hathihi alhayataaddunya
QaraiThey said, ‘We will never prefer you to the clear proofs which have come to us, and to Him who originated us. Decide whatever you want to decide. You can only decide about the life of this world.
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us. So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.

20:73
إِنَّآ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِيَغْفِرَ لَنَا خَطَٰيَٰنَا وَمَآ أَكْرَهْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلسِّحْرِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ ٧٣
Inna amanna birabbinaliyaghfira lana khatayana wamaakrahtana AAalayhi mina assihri wallahukhayrun waabqa
QaraiWe have indeed believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our offences and the magic you compelled us to perform. Allah is better and more lasting.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."

20:74
إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَأْتِ رَبَّهُۥ مُجْرِمًا فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ ٧٤
Innahu man ya/ti rabbahu mujriman fa-innalahu jahannama la yamootu feeha wala yahya
QaraiWhoever comes to his Lord laden with guilt, for him shall be hell, where he will neither live nor die.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
-
20:75
وَمَن يَأْتِهِۦ مُؤْمِنًا قَدْ عَمِلَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلدَّرَجَٰتُ ٱلْعُلَىٰ ٧٥
Waman ya/tihi mu/minan qad AAamila assalihatifaola-ika lahumu addarajatu alAAula
QaraiBut whoever comes to Him with faith and he has done righteous deeds, for such shall be the highest ranks
Saheeh InternationalBut whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
-
20:76
جَنَّٰتُ عَدْنٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ٧٦
Jannatu AAadnin tajree min tahtihaal-anharu khalideena feeha wathalikajazao man tazakka
Qarai—the Gardens of Eden, with streams running in them, to abide in them [forever], and that is the reward of him who keeps pure.
Saheeh InternationalGardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.
-
20:77
وَلَقَدْ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى فَٱضْرِبْ لَهُمْ طَرِيقًا فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ يَبَسًا لَّا تَخَٰفُ دَرَكًا وَلَا تَخْشَىٰ ٧٧
Walaqad awhayna ilamoosa an asri biAAibadee fadriblahum tareeqan fee albahri yabasan la takhafudarakan wala takhsha
QaraiWe revealed to Moses, [saying], ‘Set out with My servants at night, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea. Do not be afraid of being overtaken, and have no fear [of getting drowned].
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."

20:78
فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ بِجُنُودِهِۦ فَغَشِيَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْيَمِّ مَا غَشِيَهُمْ ٧٨
FaatbaAAahum firAAawnu bijunoodihifaghashiyahum mina alyammi ma ghashiyahum
QaraiThen Pharaoh pursued them with his troops, whereat they were engulfed by what engulfed them of the sea.
Saheeh InternationalSo Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,
-
20:79
وَأَضَلَّ فِرْعَوْنُ قَوْمَهُۥ وَمَا هَدَىٰ ٧٩
Waadalla firAAawnu qawmahu wamahada
QaraiPharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
-
20:80
يَٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ قَدْ أَنجَيْنَٰكُم مِّنْ عَدُوِّكُمْ وَوَٰعَدْنَٰكُمْ جَانِبَ ٱلطُّورِ ٱلْأَيْمَنَ وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ٨٠
Ya banee isra-eela qad anjaynakummin AAaduwwikum wawaAAadnakum janiba attoorial-aymana wanazzalna AAalaykumu almanna wassalwa
QaraiO Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We appointed with you a tryst on the right side of the Mount and We sent down to you manna and quails:
Saheeh InternationalO Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
-
20:81
كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَٰكُمْ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِيهِ فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبِى ۖ وَمَن يَحْلِلْ عَلَيْهِ غَضَبِى فَقَدْ هَوَىٰ ٨١
Kuloo min tayyibati marazaqnakum wala tatghaw feehi fayahillaAAalaykum ghadabee waman yahlil AAalayhi ghadabeefaqad hawa
Qarai‘Eat of the good things We have provided you, but do not overstep the bounds therein, lest My wrath should descend on you, and he on whom My wrath descends certainly perishes.
Saheeh International[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
-
20:82
وَإِنِّى لَغَفَّارٌ لِّمَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَٰلِحًا ثُمَّ ٱهْتَدَىٰ ٨٢
Wa-innee laghaffarun liman tabawaamana waAAamila salihan thumma ihtada
QaraiIndeed I forgive those who repent, become faithful, act righteously, and follow guidance.’
Saheeh InternationalBut indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
-
20:83
۞ وَمَآ أَعْجَلَكَ عَن قَوْمِكَ يَٰمُوسَىٰ ٨٣
Wama aAAjalaka AAan qawmika yamoosa
Qarai[God said,] ‘O Moses, what has prompted you to hasten ahead of your people?’
Saheeh International[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
-
20:84
قَالَ هُمْ أُو۟لَآءِ عَلَىٰٓ أَثَرِى وَعَجِلْتُ إِلَيْكَ رَبِّ لِتَرْضَىٰ ٨٤
Qala hum ola-i AAalaatharee waAAajiltu ilayka rabbi litarda
QaraiHe said, ‘They are close upon my heels, and I hurried on to You, my Lord, that You may be pleased.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
-
20:85
قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ ٨٥
Qala fa-inna qad fatannaqawmaka min baAAdika waadallahumu assamiriy
QaraiHe said, ‘Indeed We tried your people in your absence, and the Samiri has led them astray.’
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī has led them astray."
-
20:86
فَرَجَعَ مُوسَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ غَضْبَٰنَ أَسِفًا ۚ قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَلَمْ يَعِدْكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ وَعْدًا حَسَنًا ۚ أَفَطَالَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْعَهْدُ أَمْ أَرَدتُّمْ أَن يَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَخْلَفْتُم مَّوْعِدِى ٨٦
FarajaAAa moosa ila qawmihighadbana asifan qala ya qawmi alamyaAAidkum rabbukum waAAdan hasanan afatalaAAalaykumu alAAahdu am aradtum an yahilla AAalaykum ghadabunmin rabbikum faakhlaftum mawAAidee
QaraiThereupon Moses returned to his people, indignant and grieved. He said, ‘O my people! Did your Lord not give you a true promise? Did the period [of my absence] seem too long to you? Or did you desire that your Lord’s wrath should descend on you and so you failed your tryst with me?’
Saheeh InternationalSo Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
-
20:87
قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلَٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَآ أَوْزَارًا مِّن زِينَةِ ٱلْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَٰهَا فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ ٨٧
Qaloo ma akhlafnamawAAidaka bimalkina walakinna hummilnaawzaran min zeenati alqawmi faqathafnahafakathalika alqa assamiriy
QaraiThey said, ‘We did not fail our tryst with you of our own accord, but we were laden with the weight of those people’s ornaments, and we cast them [into the fire] and so did the Samiri.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
-
20:88
فَأَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُۥ خُوَارٌ فَقَالُوا۟ هَٰذَآ إِلَٰهُكُمْ وَإِلَٰهُ مُوسَىٰ فَنَسِىَ ٨٨
Faakhraja lahum AAijlan jasadan lahu khuwarunfaqaloo hatha ilahukum wa-ilahu moosafanasiy
QaraiThen he produced for them a calf—a [lifeless] body with a low—and they said, This is your god and the god of Moses, so he forgot!
Saheeh InternationalAnd he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
-
20:89
أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَلَّا يَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِمْ قَوْلًا وَلَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا ٨٩
Afala yarawna alla yarjiAAuilayhim qawlan wala yamliku lahum darran walanafAAa
QaraiDid they not see that it did not answer them, nor could it bring them any benefit or harm?
Saheeh InternationalDid they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
-
20:90
وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَٰرُونُ مِن قَبْلُ يَٰقَوْمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى وَأَطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرِى ٩٠
Walaqad qala lahum haroonu minqablu ya qawmi innama futintum bihi wa-innarabbakumu arrahmanu fattabiAAooneewaateeAAoo amree
QaraiAaron had certainly told them earlier, ‘O my people! You are only being tested by it. Indeed your Lord is the All-beneficent. So follow me and obey my command!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
-
20:91
قَالُوا۟ لَن نَّبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَٰكِفِينَ حَتَّىٰ يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ ٩١
Qaloo lan nabraha AAalayhi AAakifeenahatta yarjiAAa ilayna moosa
QaraiThey had said, ‘We will keep on clinging to it until Moses returns to us.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
-
20:92
قَالَ يَٰهَٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوٓا۟ ٩٢
Qala ya haroonu mamanaAAaka ith raaytahum dalloo
QaraiHe said, ‘O Aaron! What kept you, when you saw them going astray,
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
-
20:93
أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ أَفَعَصَيْتَ أَمْرِى ٩٣
Alla tattabiAAani afaAAasaytaamree
Qaraifrom following me? Did you disobey my command?’
Saheeh InternationalFrom following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
-
20:94
قَالَ يَبْنَؤُمَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَتِى وَلَا بِرَأْسِىٓ ۖ إِنِّى خَشِيتُ أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِى ٩٤
Qala yabnaomma la ta/khuthbilihyatee wala bira/see innee khasheetu an taqoolafarraqta bayna banee isra-eela walam tarqub qawlee
QaraiHe said, ‘O son of my mother! Do not grab my beard or my head! I feared lest you should say, ‘‘You have caused a rift among the Children of Israel and did not heed my word [of advice].’’’
Saheeh International[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
-
20:95
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَٰسَٰمِرِىُّ ٩٥
Qala fama khatbuka yasamiriy
QaraiHe said, ‘What is your business, O Samiri?’
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
-
20:96
قَالَ بَصُرْتُ بِمَا لَمْ يَبْصُرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَقَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِّنْ أَثَرِ ٱلرَّسُولِ فَنَبَذْتُهَا وَكَذَٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتْ لِى نَفْسِى ٩٦
Qala basurtu bima lamyabsuroo bihi faqabadtu qabdatan min athariarrasooli fanabathtuha wakathalikasawwalat lee nafsee
QaraiHe said, ‘I saw what they did not see. I took a handful [of dust] from the messenger’s trail and threw it. That is how my soul prompted me.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger and threw it, and thus did my soul entice me."

20:97
قَالَ فَٱذْهَبْ فَإِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ أَن تَقُولَ لَا مِسَاسَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَكَ مَوْعِدًا لَّن تُخْلَفَهُۥ ۖ وَٱنظُرْ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَٰهِكَ ٱلَّذِى ظَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفًا ۖ لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ نَسْفًا ٩٧
Qala fathhab fa-innalaka fee alhayati an taqoola la misasawa-inna laka mawAAidan lan tukhlafahu wanthurila ilahika allathee thaltaAAalayhi AAakifan lanuharriqannahu thummalanansifannahu fee alyammi nasfa
QaraiHe said, ‘Begone! It shall be your [lot] throughout life to say, ‘‘Do not touch me!’’ Indeed, there is a tryst for you which you will not fail to keep! Now look at your god to whom you went on clinging. We will burn it down and then scatter it[s ashes] into the sea.
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.' And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.

20:98
إِنَّمَآ إِلَٰهُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عِلْمًا ٩٨
Innama ilahukumu Allahuallathee la ilaha illa huwa wasiAAakulla shay-in AAilma
QaraiIndeed your God is Allah. There is no god except Him. He embraces all things in [His] knowledge.’
Saheeh InternationalYour god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
-
20:99
كَذَٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ مَا قَدْ سَبَقَ ۚ وَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَٰكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكْرًا ٩٩
Kathalika naqussu AAalayka minanba-i ma qad sabaqa waqad ataynakamin ladunna thikra
QaraiThus do We relate to you some accounts of what is past. Certainly, We have given you a Reminder from Ourselves.
Saheeh InternationalThus, [O Muḥammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
-
20:100
مَّنْ أَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَحْمِلُ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ وِزْرًا ١٠٠
Man aAArada AAanhu fa-innahu yahmiluyawma alqiyamati wizra
QaraiWhoever disregards it shall bear a burden [of punishment] on the Day of Resurrection,
Saheeh InternationalWhoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden [i.e., great sin],
-
20:101
خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهِ ۖ وَسَآءَ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ حِمْلًا ١٠١
Khalideena feehi wasaa lahumyawma alqiyamati himla
Qarairemaining in it [forever]. Evil is their burden on the Day of Resurrection
Saheeh International[Abiding] eternally therein, and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load -
-
20:102
يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ ۚ وَنَحْشُرُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ يَوْمَئِذٍ زُرْقًا ١٠٢
Yawma yunfakhu fee assooriwanahshuru almujrimeena yawma-ithin zurqa
Qarai—the day the Trumpet will be blown; on that day We shall muster the guilty with blind eyes.
Saheeh InternationalThe Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.
-
20:103
يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا عَشْرًا ١٠٣
Yatakhafatoona baynahum in labithtumilla AAashra
QaraiThey will whisper to one another: ‘You have stayed only for ten [days].’
Saheeh InternationalThey will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]."
-
20:104
نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذْ يَقُولُ أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا يَوْمًا ١٠٤
Nahnu aAAlamu bima yaqooloonaith yaqoolu amthaluhum tareeqatan in labithtum illayawma
QaraiWe know best what they will say, when the smartest of them in approach will say, ‘You stayed only a day!’
Saheeh InternationalWe are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."
-
20:105
وَيَسَْٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْجِبَالِ فَقُلْ يَنسِفُهَا رَبِّى نَسْفًا ١٠٥
Wayas-aloonaka AAani aljibali faqulyansifuha rabbee nasfa
QaraiThey question you concerning the mountains. Say, ‘My Lord will scatter them [like dust].’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they ask you about the mountains, so say, "My Lord will blow them away with a blast.
-
20:106
فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعًا صَفْصَفًا ١٠٦
Fayatharuha qaAAan safsafa
QaraiThen He will leave it a level plain.
Saheeh InternationalAnd He will leave it [i.e., the earth] a level plain;
-
20:107
لَّا تَرَىٰ فِيهَا عِوَجًا وَلَآ أَمْتًا ١٠٧
La tara feeha AAiwajanwala amta
QaraiYou will not see any crookedness or unevenness in it.
Saheeh InternationalYou will not see therein a depression or an elevation."
-
20:108
يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلدَّاعِىَ لَا عِوَجَ لَهُۥ ۖ وَخَشَعَتِ ٱلْأَصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ فَلَا تَسْمَعُ إِلَّا هَمْسًا ١٠٨
Yawma-ithin yattabiAAoona addaAAiyala AAiwaja lahu wakhashaAAati al-aswatu lirrahmanifala tasmaAAu illa hamsa
QaraiOn that day they will follow the summoner without zigzagging. Their voices will be muted before the All-beneficent, and you will hear nothing but a murmur.
Saheeh InternationalThat Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].
-
20:109
يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا تَنفَعُ ٱلشَّفَٰعَةُ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وَرَضِىَ لَهُۥ قَوْلًا ١٠٩
Yawma-ithin la tanfaAAu ashshafaAAatuilla man athina lahu arrahmanuwaradiya lahu qawla
QaraiIntercession will not avail that day except from him whom the All-beneficent allows and approves of his word.
Saheeh InternationalThat Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
-
20:110
يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِهِۦ عِلْمًا ١١٠
YaAAlamu ma bayna aydeehim wamakhalfahum wala yuheetoona bihi AAilma
QaraiHe knows what is before them and behind them, though they do not comprehend Him in their knowledge.
Saheeh InternationalHe [i.e., Allāh] knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, but they do not encompass it [i.e., what He knows] in knowledge.
-
20:111
۞ وَعَنَتِ ٱلْوُجُوهُ لِلْحَىِّ ٱلْقَيُّومِ ۖ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْمًا ١١١
WaAAanati alwujoohu lilhayyialqayyoomi waqad khaba man hamala thulma
QaraiAll faces shall be humbled before the Living One, the All-sustainer, and those who bear [the burden of] wrongdoing will fail.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. And he will have failed who carries injustice.
-
20:112
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَا يَخَافُ ظُلْمًا وَلَا هَضْمًا ١١٢
Waman yaAAmal mina assalihatiwahuwa mu/minun fala yakhafu thulmanwala hadma
QaraiBut whoever does righteous deeds, being faithful, will neither fear any injustice or disparagement.
Saheeh InternationalBut he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
-
20:113
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ قُرْءَانًا عَرَبِيًّا وَصَرَّفْنَا فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلْوَعِيدِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ أَوْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُمْ ذِكْرًا ١١٣
Wakathalika anzalnahu qur-ananAAarabiyyan wasarrafna feehi mina alwaAAeedilaAAallahum yattaqoona aw yuhdithu lahum thikra
QaraiThus We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran and We have paraphrased the warnings in it variously so that they may be Godwary, or it may prompt them to remembrance.
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
-
20:114
فَتَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۗ وَلَا تَعْجَلْ بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يُقْضَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ وَحْيُهُۥ ۖ وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًا ١١٤
FataAAala Allahualmaliku alhaqqu wala taAAjal bilqur-animin qabli an yuqda ilayka wahyuhu waqul rabbizidnee AAilma
QaraiSo exalted is Allah, the True Sovereign. Do not hasten with the Quran before its revelation is completed for you, and say, ‘My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.’
Saheeh InternationalSo high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
-
20:115
وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ ءَادَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِىَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُۥ عَزْمًا ١١٥
Walaqad AAahidna ila adamamin qablu fanasiya walam najid lahu AAazma
QaraiCertainly We had enjoined Adam earlier; but he forgot, and We did not find any resoluteness in him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.
-
20:116
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لَِٔادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ ١١٦
Wa-ith qulna lilmala-ikatiosjudoo li-adama fasajadoo illa ibleesa aba
QaraiWhen We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate before Adam,’ they prostrated, but not Iblis: he refused.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees; he refused.
-
20:117
فَقُلْنَا يََٰٓٔادَمُ إِنَّ هَٰذَا عَدُوٌّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَىٰٓ ١١٧
Faqulna ya adamu innahatha AAaduwwun laka walizawjika falayukhrijannakuma mina aljannati fatashqa
QaraiWe said, ‘O Adam! This is indeed an enemy of yours and your mate’s. So do not let him expel you from paradise, or you will be miserable.
Saheeh InternationalSo We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
-
20:118
إِنَّ لَكَ أَلَّا تَجُوعَ فِيهَا وَلَا تَعْرَىٰ ١١٨
Inna laka alla tajooAAa feehawala taAAra
QaraiYou will neither be hungry in it nor naked.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
-
20:119
وَأَنَّكَ لَا تَظْمَؤُا۟ فِيهَا وَلَا تَضْحَىٰ ١١٩
Waannaka la tathmaofeeha wala tadha
QaraiYou will neither be thirsty in it, nor suffer from [the heat of] the sun.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
-
20:120
فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ قَالَ يََٰٓٔادَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ ٱلْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لَّا يَبْلَىٰ ١٢٠
Fawaswasa ilayhi ashshaytanuqala ya adamu hal adulluka AAalashajarati alkhuldi wamulkin la yabla
QaraiThen Satan tempted him. He said, ‘O Adam! Shall I show you the tree of immortality, and an imperishable kingdom?’
Saheeh InternationalThen Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
-
20:121
فَأَكَلَا مِنْهَا فَبَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۚ وَعَصَىٰٓ ءَادَمُ رَبَّهُۥ فَغَوَىٰ ١٢١
Faakala minha fabadat lahumasaw-atuhuma watafiqa yakhsifaniAAalayhima min waraqi aljannati waAAasa adamurabbahu faghawa
QaraiSo they both ate of it, and their nakedness became evident to them, and they began to stitch over themselves with the leaves of paradise. Adam disobeyed his Lord, and went amiss.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
-
20:122
ثُمَّ ٱجْتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدَىٰ ١٢٢
Thumma ijtabahu rabbuhu fatabaAAalayhi wahada
QaraiThen his Lord chose him, and turned to him clemently, and guided him.
Saheeh InternationalThen his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
-
20:123
قَالَ ٱهْبِطَا مِنْهَا جَمِيعًۢا ۖ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّى هُدًى فَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هُدَاىَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشْقَىٰ ١٢٣
Qala ihbita minhajameeAAan baAAdukum libaAAdin AAaduwwun fa-immaya/tiyannakum minnee hudan famani ittabaAAa hudaya falayadillu wala yashqa
QaraiHe said, ‘Get down both of you from it, all together, being enemies of one another! Yet, should any guidance come to you from Me, those who follow My guidance will not go astray, nor will they be miserable.
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
-
20:124
وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِى فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا وَنَحْشُرُهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ أَعْمَىٰ ١٢٤
Waman aAArada AAan thikreefa-inna lahu maAAeeshatan danka wanahshuruhuyawma alqiyamati aAAma
QaraiBut whoever disregards My remembrance, his shall be a wretched life, and We shall raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."

20:125
قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرْتَنِىٓ أَعْمَىٰ وَقَدْ كُنتُ بَصِيرًا ١٢٥
Qala rabbi lima hashartaneeaAAma waqad kuntu baseera
QaraiHe will say, ‘My Lord! Why have You raised me blind, though I used to see?’
Saheeh InternationalHe will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
-
20:126
قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ أَتَتْكَ ءَايَٰتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا ۖ وَكَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ تُنسَىٰ ١٢٦
Qala kathalika atatka ayatunafanaseetaha wakathalika alyawma tunsa
QaraiHe will say: ‘So it is. Our signs came to you, but you forgot them, and so you will be forgotten today.’
Saheeh International[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
-
20:127
وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَنْ أَسْرَفَ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنۢ بَِٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ ۚ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلَْٔاخِرَةِ أَشَدُّ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ ١٢٧
Wakathalika najzee man asrafa walamyu/min bi-ayati rabbihi walaAAathabu al-akhiratiashaddu waabqa
QaraiThus do We requite those who transgress and do not believe in the signs of their Lord, and the punishment of the Hereafter is severer and more lasting.
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.
-
20:128
أَفَلَمْ يَهْدِ لَهُمْ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ يَمْشُونَ فِى مَسَٰكِنِهِمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لََٔايَٰتٍ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلنُّهَىٰ ١٢٨
Afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknaqablahum mina alqurooni yamshoona fee masakinihim inna feethalika laayatin li-olee annuha
QaraiDoes it not dawn upon them how many generations We have destroyed before them, amid [the ruins of] whose dwellings they walk? There are indeed signs in this for those who have reason.
Saheeh InternationalThen, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
-
20:129
وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَكَانَ لِزَامًا وَأَجَلٌ مُّسَمًّى ١٢٩
Walawla kalimatun sabaqat minrabbika lakana lizaman waajalun musamma
QaraiWere it not for a prior decree of your Lord and a specified time, [their doom] would have attended [their guilt].
Saheeh InternationalAnd if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately], and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
-
20:130
فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا ۖ وَمِنْ ءَانَآئِ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْ وَأَطْرَافَ ٱلنَّهَارِ لَعَلَّكَ تَرْضَىٰ ١٣٠
Fasbir AAala mayaqooloona wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulooAAiashshamsi waqabla ghuroobiha wamin ana-iallayli fasabbih waatrafa annaharilaAAallaka tarda
QaraiSo be patient with what they say, and celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the sunset, and glorify Him in watches of the night and at the day’s ends, that you may be pleased.
Saheeh InternationalSo be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
-
20:131
وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ ١٣١
Wala tamuddanna AAaynayka ilama mattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum zahrata alhayatiaddunya linaftinahum feehi warizqu rabbika khayrunwaabqa
QaraiDo not extend your glance toward what We have provided certain groups of them as a glitter of the life of this world, so that We may test them thereby. The provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
-
20:132
وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا ۖ لَا نَسَْٔلُكَ رِزْقًا ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ وَٱلْعَٰقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ١٣٢
Wa/mur ahlaka bissalatiwastabir AAalayha la nas-alukarizqan nahnu narzuquka walAAaqibatu littaqwa
QaraiAnd bid your family to prayer and be steadfast in maintaining it. We do not ask any provision of you: it is We who provide for you, and to Godwariness belongs the ultimate outcome [in the Hereafter].
Saheeh InternationalAnd enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.

20:133
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْلَا يَأْتِينَا بَِٔايَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦٓ ۚ أَوَلَمْ تَأْتِهِم بَيِّنَةُ مَا فِى ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ١٣٣
Waqaloo lawla ya/teenabi-ayatin min rabbihi awa lam ta/tihim bayyinatu mafee assuhufi al-oola
QaraiThey say, ‘Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?’ Has there not come to them a clear proof in that which is in the former scriptures?
Saheeh InternationalAnd they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?

20:134
وَلَوْ أَنَّآ أَهْلَكْنَٰهُم بِعَذَابٍ مِّن قَبْلِهِۦ لَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوْلَآ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَايَٰتِكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن نَّذِلَّ وَنَخْزَىٰ ١٣٤
Walaw anna ahlaknahum biAAathabinmin qablihi laqaloo rabbana lawla arsaltailayna rasoolan fanattabiAAa ayatika minqabli an nathilla wanakhza
QaraiHad We destroyed them with a punishment before it, they would have surely said, ‘Our Lord! Why did You not send us an apostle so that we might have followed Your signs before we were abased and disgraced?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"

20:135
قُلْ كُلٌّ مُّتَرَبِّصٌ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ ۖ فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ ٱلسَّوِىِّ وَمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ ١٣٥
Qul kullun mutarabbisun fatarabbasoofasataAAlamoona man as-habu assiratiassawiyyi wamani ihtada
QaraiSay, ‘Everyone [of us] is waiting. So wait! Soon you will know who are the people of the right path, and who is [rightly] guided.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Each [of us] is waiting; so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
