Adh-Dhariyat · The Winnowing Winds

60 verses · Revealed in Makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 51:1

   وَٱلذَّٰرِيَٰتِ ذَرْوًا ۝١

   QaraiBy the scattering [winds] that scatter [the clouds];

2. 51:2

   فَٱلْحَٰمِلَٰتِ وِقْرًا ۝٢

   Qaraiby the [rain] bearing [clouds] laden [with water];

3. 51:3

   فَٱلْجَٰرِيَٰتِ يُسْرًا ۝٣

   Qaraiby [the ships] which move gently [on the sea];

4. 51:4

   فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَٰتِ أَمْرًا ۝٤

   Qaraiby [the angels] who dispense [livelihood] by [His] command:

5. 51:5

   إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌ ۝٥

   Qaraiindeed what you are promised is true,

6. 51:6

   وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٌ ۝٦

   Qaraiand indeed the retribution will surely come to pass!

7. 51:7

   وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْحُبُكِ ۝٧

   QaraiBy the sky full of adornment [with stars],

8. 51:8

   إِنَّكُمْ لَفِى قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍ ۝٨

   Qaraiindeed you are of different opinions!

9. 51:9

   يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَ ۝٩

   QaraiHe who has been turned away [from the truth] is turned away from it.

10. 51:10

    قُتِلَ ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَ ۝١٠

    QaraiPerish the liars,

11. 51:11

    ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ ۝١١

    Qaraiwho are heedless in a stupor!

12. 51:12

    يَسَْٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ ۝١٢

    QaraiThey ask, ‘When will be the Day of Retribution?’

13. 51:13

    يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ ۝١٣

    QaraiIt is the day when they will be tormented in the Fire,

14. 51:14

    ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ ۝١٤

    Qarai[and will be told]: ‘Taste your torment. This is what you used to hasten.’

15. 51:15

    إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ ۝١٥

    QaraiIndeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and springs,

16. 51:16

    ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ ۝١٦

    Qaraireceiving what their Lord has given them, for they had been virtuous aforetime.

17. 51:17

    كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ ۝١٧

    QaraiThey used to sleep a little during the night,

18. 51:18

    وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ ۝١٨

    Qaraiand at dawns they would plead for forgiveness,

19. 51:19

    وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ ۝١٩

    Qaraiand there was a share in their wealth for the beggar and the deprived.

20. 51:20

    وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَٰتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ ۝٢٠

    QaraiIn the earth are signs for those who have conviction,

21. 51:21

    وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ ۝٢١

    Qaraiand in your souls [as well]. Will you not then perceive?

22. 51:22

    وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٢

    QaraiAnd in the sky is your provision and what you are promised.

23. 51:23

    فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ ۝٢٣

    QaraiBy the Lord of the sky and the earth, it is indeed the truth, just as [it is a fact that] you speak.

24. 51:24

    هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ ۝٢٤

    QaraiDid you receive the story of Abraham’s honoured guests?

25. 51:25

    إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَٰمٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ ۝٢٥

    QaraiWhen they entered into his presence, they said, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’ He answered, ‘[You are] an unfamiliar folk.’

26. 51:26

    فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ ۝٢٦

    QaraiThen he retired to his family and brought a fat [roasted] calf,

27. 51:27

    فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ ۝٢٧

    Qaraiand put it near them. He said, ‘Will you not eat?’

28. 51:28

    فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ ۝٢٨

    QaraiThen he felt a fear of them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid!’ and they gave him the good news of a wise son.

29. 51:29

    فَأَقْبَلَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ فِى صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ ۝٢٩

    QaraiThen his wife came forward crying [with joy]. She beat her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman!’

30. 51:30

    قَالُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ۝٣٠

    QaraiThey said, ‘So has your Lord said. Indeed He is the All-wise, the All-knowing.’

31. 51:31

    ۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ ۝٣١

    QaraiHe said, ‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’

32. 51:32

    قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ ۝٣٢

    QaraiThey said, ‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,

33. 51:33

    لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍ ۝٣٣

    Qaraithat We may rain upon them stones of clay,

34. 51:34

    مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ ۝٣٤

    Qaraisent for the transgressors from your Lord.

35. 51:35

    فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۝٣٥

    QaraiSo We picked out those who were in it of the faithful,

36. 51:36

    فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ ۝٣٦

    Qaraibut We did not find there other than one house of Muslims,

37. 51:37

    وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ ۝٣٧

    Qaraiand We have left therein a sign for those who fear a painful punishment.’

38. 51:38

    وَفِى مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ ۝٣٨

    QaraiAnd in Moses [too there is a sign] when We sent him to Pharaoh with a manifest authority.

39. 51:39

    فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكْنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَٰحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ ۝٣٩

    QaraiBut he turned away assured of his might, and said, ‘A magician or a crazy man!’

40. 51:40

    فَأَخَذْنَٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ ۝٤٠

    QaraiSo We seized him and his hosts, and cast them into the sea, while he was blameworthy.

41. 51:41

    وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَ ۝٤١

    QaraiAnd in ‘Ad when We unleashed upon them a barren wind.

42. 51:42

    مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ ۝٤٢

    QaraiIt left nothing that it came upon without making it like decayed bones.

43. 51:43

    وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ ۝٤٣

    QaraiAnd in Thamud, when they were told, ‘Enjoy for a while.’

44. 51:44

    فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ ۝٤٤

    QaraiThen they defied the command of their Lord; so the thunderbolt seized them as they looked on.

45. 51:45

    فَمَا ٱسْتَطَٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ ۝٤٥

    QaraiSo they were neither able to rise up, nor to come to one another’s aid.

46. 51:46

    وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَٰسِقِينَ ۝٤٦

    QaraiAnd the people of Noah aforetime. Indeed, they were a transgressing lot.

47. 51:47

    وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ ۝٤٧

    QaraiWe have built the heaven with might, and indeed it is We who are its expanders.

48. 51:48

    وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَٰهِدُونَ ۝٤٨

    QaraiAnd We have spread out the earth, so how excellent spreaders We have been!

49. 51:49

    وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٩

    QaraiIn all things We have created pairs so that you may take admonition.

50. 51:50

    فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ ۝٥٠

    Qarai‘So flee toward Allah. Indeed, I am from Him a manifest warner to you.

51. 51:51

    وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ ۝٥١

    QaraiDo not set up another god besides Allah. Indeed I am from Him a manifest warner to you.’

52. 51:52

    كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ ۝٥٢

    QaraiSo it was that there did not come any apostle to those who were before them but they said, ‘A magician,’ or ‘A crazy man!’

53. 51:53

    أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ ۝٥٣

    QaraiDid they enjoin this upon one another?! Rather, they were a rebellious lot.

54. 51:54

    فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍ ۝٥٤

    QaraiSo turn away from them, as you will not be blameworthy.

55. 51:55

    وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۝٥٥

    QaraiAnd admonish, for admonition indeed benefits the faithful.

56. 51:56

    وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ ۝٥٦

    QaraiI did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me.

57. 51:57

    مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ ۝٥٧

    QaraiI desire no provision from them, nor do I desire that they should feed Me.

58. 51:58

    إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ ۝٥٨

    QaraiIndeed it is Allah who is the All-provider, Powerful and All-strong.

59. 51:59

    فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصْحَٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ ۝٥٩

    QaraiIndeed the lot of those who do wrong [now] will be like the lot of their [earlier] counterparts. So let them not ask Me to hasten on [that fate].

60. 51:60

    فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن يَوْمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ ۝٦٠

    QaraiWoe to the faithless for the day they are promised!
