Adh-Dhariyat · The Winnowing Winds
60 verses · Revealed in Makkah
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
51:1
وَٱلذَّٰرِيَٰتِ ذَرْوًا ١
Waththariyati tharwa
QaraiBy the scattering [winds] that scatter [the clouds];
Saheeh InternationalBy the [winds] scattering [dust], dispersing [it]
-
51:2
فَٱلْحَٰمِلَٰتِ وِقْرًا ٢
Falhamilati wiqra
Qaraiby the [rain] bearing [clouds] laden [with water];
Saheeh InternationalAnd the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]
-
51:3
فَٱلْجَٰرِيَٰتِ يُسْرًا ٣
Faljariyati yusra
Qaraiby [the ships] which move gently [on the sea];
Saheeh InternationalAnd the ships sailing with ease
-
51:4
فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَٰتِ أَمْرًا ٤
Falmuqassimati amra
Qaraiby [the angels] who dispense [livelihood] by [His] command:
Saheeh InternationalAnd the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,
-
51:5
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌ ٥
Innama tooAAadoona lasadiq
Qaraiindeed what you are promised is true,
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, what you are promised is true.
-
51:6
وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٌ ٦
Wa-inna addeena lawaqiAA
Qaraiand indeed the retribution will surely come to pass!
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, the recompense is to occur.
-
51:7
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْحُبُكِ ٧
Wassama-i thati alhubuk
QaraiBy the sky full of adornment [with stars],
Saheeh InternationalBy the heaven containing pathways,
-
51:8
إِنَّكُمْ لَفِى قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍ ٨
Innakum lafee qawlin mukhtalif
Qaraiindeed you are of different opinions!
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, you are in differing speech.
-
51:9
يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَ ٩
Yu/faku AAanhu man ofik
QaraiHe who has been turned away [from the truth] is turned away from it.
Saheeh InternationalDeluded away from it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is he who is deluded.
-
51:10
قُتِلَ ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَ ١٠
Qutila alkharrasoon
QaraiPerish the liars,
Saheeh InternationalDestroyed are the misinformers
-
51:11
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ ١١
Allatheena hum fee ghamratin sahoon
Qaraiwho are heedless in a stupor!
Saheeh InternationalWho are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.
-
51:12
يَسَْٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ ١٢
Yas-aloona ayyana yawmu addeen
QaraiThey ask, ‘When will be the Day of Retribution?’
Saheeh InternationalThey ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"
-
51:13
يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ ١٣
Yawma hum AAala annariyuftanoon
QaraiIt is the day when they will be tormented in the Fire,
Saheeh International[It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire
-
51:14
ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ ١٤
Thooqoo fitnatakum hatha allatheekuntum bihi tastaAAjiloon
Qarai[and will be told]: ‘Taste your torment. This is what you used to hasten.’
Saheeh International[And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."
-
51:15
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ ١٥
Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatinwaAAuyoon
QaraiIndeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and springs,
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs,
-
51:16
ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ ١٦
Akhitheena ma atahumrabbuhum innahum kanoo qabla thalika muhsineen
Qaraireceiving what their Lord has given them, for they had been virtuous aforetime.
Saheeh InternationalAccepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good.
-
51:17
كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ ١٧
Kanoo qaleelan mina allayli mayahjaAAoon
QaraiThey used to sleep a little during the night,
Saheeh InternationalThey used to sleep but little of the night,
-
51:18
وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ ١٨
Wabil-ashari humyastaghfiroon
Qaraiand at dawns they would plead for forgiveness,
Saheeh InternationalAnd in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,
-
51:19
وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ ١٩
Wafee amwalihim haqqun lissa-iliwalmahroom
Qaraiand there was a share in their wealth for the beggar and the deprived.
Saheeh InternationalAnd from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.
-
51:20
وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَٰتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ ٢٠
Wafee al-ardi ayatunlilmooqineen
QaraiIn the earth are signs for those who have conviction,
Saheeh InternationalAnd on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]
-
51:21
وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ ٢١
Wafee anfusikum afala tubsiroon
Qaraiand in your souls [as well]. Will you not then perceive?
Saheeh InternationalAnd in yourselves. Then will you not see?
-
51:22
وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ ٢٢
Wafee assama-i rizqukum wamatooAAadoon
QaraiAnd in the sky is your provision and what you are promised.
Saheeh InternationalAnd in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.
-
51:23
فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ ٢٣
Fawarabbi assama-i wal-ardiinnahu lahaqqun mithla ma annakum tantiqoon
QaraiBy the Lord of the sky and the earth, it is indeed the truth, just as [it is a fact that] you speak.
Saheeh InternationalThen by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.
-
51:24
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ ٢٤
Hal ataka hadeethu dayfiibraheema almukrameen
QaraiDid you receive the story of Abraham’s honoured guests?
Saheeh InternationalHas there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham? -
-
51:25
إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَٰمٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ ٢٥
Ith dakhaloo AAalayhi faqaloosalaman qala salamun qawmun munkaroon
QaraiWhen they entered into his presence, they said, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’ He answered, ‘[You are] an unfamiliar folk.’
Saheeh InternationalWhen they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace; [you are] a people unknown."

51:26
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ ٢٦
Faragha ila ahlihi fajaabiAAijlin sameen
QaraiThen he retired to his family and brought a fat [roasted] calf,
Saheeh InternationalThen he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.
-
51:27
فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ ٢٧
Faqarrabahu ilayhim qala alata/kuloon
Qaraiand put it near them. He said, ‘Will you not eat?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"
-
51:28
فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ ٢٨
Faawjasa minhum kheefatan qaloo latakhaf wabashsharoohu bighulamin AAaleem
QaraiThen he felt a fear of them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid!’ and they gave him the good news of a wise son.
Saheeh InternationalAnd he felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.

51:29
فَأَقْبَلَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ فِى صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ ٢٩
Faaqbalati imraatuhu fee sarratin fasakkatwajhaha waqalat AAajoozun AAaqeem
QaraiThen his wife came forward crying [with joy]. She beat her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"
-
51:30
قَالُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٣٠
Qaloo kathaliki qalarabbuki innahu huwa alhakeemu alAAaleem
QaraiThey said, ‘So has your Lord said. Indeed He is the All-wise, the All-knowing.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."
-
51:31
۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ ٣١
Qala fama khatbukumayyuha almursaloon
QaraiHe said, ‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’
Saheeh International[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
-
51:32
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ ٣٢
Qaloo inna orsilna ilaqawmin mujrimeen
QaraiThey said, ‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals
-
51:33
لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍ ٣٣
Linursila AAalayhim hijaratanmin teen
Qaraithat We may rain upon them stones of clay,
Saheeh InternationalTo send down upon them stones of clay,
-
51:34
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ ٣٤
Musawwamatan AAinda rabbika lilmusrifeen
Qaraisent for the transgressors from your Lord.
Saheeh InternationalMarked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."
-
51:35
فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٣٥
Faakhrajna man kana feehamina almu/mineen
QaraiSo We picked out those who were in it of the faithful,
Saheeh InternationalSo We brought out whoever was in them [i.e., the cities] of the believers.
-
51:36
فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ ٣٦
Fama wajadna feehaghayra baytin mina almuslimeen
Qaraibut We did not find there other than one house of Muslims,
Saheeh InternationalAnd We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.
-
51:37
وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ ٣٧
Watarakna feeha ayatanlillatheena yakhafoona alAAathaba al-aleem
Qaraiand We have left therein a sign for those who fear a painful punishment.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
-
51:38
وَفِى مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ ٣٨
Wafee moosa ith arsanahuila firAAawna bisultanin mubeen
QaraiAnd in Moses [too there is a sign] when We sent him to Pharaoh with a manifest authority.
Saheeh InternationalAnd in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
-
51:39
فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكْنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَٰحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ ٣٩
Fatawalla biruknihi waqala sahirunaw majnoon
QaraiBut he turned away assured of his might, and said, ‘A magician or a crazy man!’
Saheeh InternationalBut he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman."
-
51:40
فَأَخَذْنَٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ ٤٠
Faakhathnahu wajunoodahufanabathnahum fee alyammi wahuwa muleem
QaraiSo We seized him and his hosts, and cast them into the sea, while he was blameworthy.
Saheeh InternationalSo We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.
-
51:41
وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَ ٤١
Wafee AAadin ith arsalnaAAalayhimu arreeha alAAaqeem
QaraiAnd in ‘Ad when We unleashed upon them a barren wind.
Saheeh InternationalAnd in ʿAad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.
-
51:42
مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ ٤٢
Ma tatharu min shay-in atatAAalayhi illa jaAAalat-hu karrameem
QaraiIt left nothing that it came upon without making it like decayed bones.
Saheeh InternationalIt left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.
-
51:43
وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ ٤٣
Wafee thamooda ith qeela lahumtamattaAAoo hatta heen
QaraiAnd in Thamud, when they were told, ‘Enjoy for a while.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd in Thamūd, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."
-
51:44
فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ ٤٤
FaAAataw AAan amri rabbihim faakhathat-humuassaAAiqatu wahum yanthuroon
QaraiThen they defied the command of their Lord; so the thunderbolt seized them as they looked on.
Saheeh InternationalBut they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.
-
51:45
فَمَا ٱسْتَطَٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ ٤٥
Fama istataAAoo min qiyaminwama kanoo muntasireen
QaraiSo they were neither able to rise up, nor to come to one another’s aid.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.
-
51:46
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَٰسِقِينَ ٤٦
Waqawma noohin min qablu innahum kanooqawman fasiqeen
QaraiAnd the people of Noah aforetime. Indeed, they were a transgressing lot.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient.
-
51:47
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ ٤٧
Wassamaa banaynahabi-aydin wa-inna lamoosiAAoon
QaraiWe have built the heaven with might, and indeed it is We who are its expanders.
Saheeh InternationalAnd the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.
-
51:48
وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَٰهِدُونَ ٤٨
Wal-arda farashnahafaniAAma almahidoon
QaraiAnd We have spread out the earth, so how excellent spreaders We have been!
Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer.
-
51:49
وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ ٤٩
Wamin kulli shay-in khalaqna zawjaynilaAAallakum tathakkaroon
QaraiIn all things We have created pairs so that you may take admonition.
Saheeh InternationalAnd of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.
-
51:50
فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ ٥٠
Fafirroo ila Allahi inneelakum minhu natheerun mubeen
Qarai‘So flee toward Allah. Indeed, I am from Him a manifest warner to you.
Saheeh InternationalSo flee to Allāh. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.
-
51:51
وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ ٥١
Wala tajAAaloo maAAa Allahi ilahanakhara innee lakum minhu natheerun mubeen
QaraiDo not set up another god besides Allah. Indeed I am from Him a manifest warner to you.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.
-
51:52
كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ ٥٢
Kathalika ma ata allatheenamin qablihim min rasoolin illa qaloo sahirunaw majnoon
QaraiSo it was that there did not come any apostle to those who were before them but they said, ‘A magician,’ or ‘A crazy man!’
Saheeh InternationalSimilarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman."
-
51:53
أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ ٥٣
Atawasaw bihi bal hum qawmun taghoon
QaraiDid they enjoin this upon one another?! Rather, they were a rebellious lot.
Saheeh InternationalDid they suggest it to them? Rather, they [themselves] are a transgressing people.
-
51:54
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍ ٥٤
Fatawalla AAanhum fama anta bimaloom
QaraiSo turn away from them, as you will not be blameworthy.
Saheeh InternationalSo leave them, [O Muḥammad], for you are not to be blamed.
-
51:55
وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٥٥
Wathakkir fa-inna aththikratanfaAAu almu/mineen
QaraiAnd admonish, for admonition indeed benefits the faithful.
Saheeh InternationalAnd remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.
-
51:56
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ ٥٦
Wama khalaqtu aljinna wal-insailla liyaAAbudoon
QaraiI did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me.
Saheeh InternationalAnd I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
-
51:57
مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ ٥٧
Ma oreedu minhum min rizqin wamaoreedu an yutAAimoon
QaraiI desire no provision from them, nor do I desire that they should feed Me.
Saheeh InternationalI do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.
-
51:58
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ ٥٨
Inna Allaha huwa arrazzaquthoo alquwwati almateen
QaraiIndeed it is Allah who is the All-provider, Powerful and All-strong.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is Allāh who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.
-
51:59
فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصْحَٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ ٥٩
Fa-inna lillatheena thalamoothanooban mithla thanoobi as-habihimfala yastaAAjiloon
QaraiIndeed the lot of those who do wrong [now] will be like the lot of their [earlier] counterparts. So let them not ask Me to hasten on [that fate].
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their companions [i.e., predecessors], so let them not impatiently urge Me.
-
51:60
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن يَوْمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ ٦٠
Fawaylun lillatheena kafaroo minyawmihimu allathee yooAAadoon
QaraiWoe to the faithless for the day they are promised!
Saheeh InternationalAnd woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised.
