Al-Waqi'ah · The Inevitable

96 verses · Revealed in Makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 56:1

   إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ۝١

   QaraiWhen the Imminent [Hour] befalls

2. 56:2

   لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۝٢

   Qarai—there is no denying that it will befall—

3. 56:3

   خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ۝٣

   Qarai[it will be] lowering and exalting.

4. 56:4

   إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا ۝٤

   QaraiWhen the earth is shaken violently,

5. 56:5

   وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ۝٥

   Qaraiand the mountains are shattered into bits

6. 56:6

   فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا ۝٦

   Qaraiand become scattered dust,

7. 56:7

   وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَٰثَةً ۝٧

   Qaraiyou will be three groups:

8. 56:8

   فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ۝٨

   QaraiThe People of the Right Hand—and what are the People of the Right Hand?!

9. 56:9

   وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشَْٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشَْٔمَةِ ۝٩

   QaraiAnd the People of the Left Hand—and what are the People of the Left Hand?!

10. 56:10

    وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ۝١٠

    QaraiAnd the Foremost Ones are the foremost ones:

11. 56:11

    أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ۝١١

    Qaraithey are the ones brought near [to Allah],

12. 56:12

    فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ۝١٢

    Qarai[who will reside] in the gardens of bliss.

13. 56:13

    ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ۝١٣

    QaraiA multitude from the former [generations]

14. 56:14

    وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلَْٔاخِرِينَ ۝١٤

    Qaraiand a few from the latter ones.

15. 56:15

    عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ۝١٥

    QaraiOn brocaded couches

16. 56:16

    مُّتَّكِِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ۝١٦

    Qaraireclining on them, face to face.

17. 56:17

    يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ۝١٧

    QaraiThey will be waited upon by immortal youths,

18. 56:18

    بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ ۝١٨

    Qaraiwith goblets and ewers and a cup of a clear wine,

19. 56:19

    لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ ۝١٩

    Qaraiwhich causes them neither headache nor stupefaction,

20. 56:20

    وَفَٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ ۝٢٠

    Qaraiand such fruits as they prefer

21. 56:21

    وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ ۝٢١

    Qaraiand such flesh of fowls as they desire,

22. 56:22

    وَحُورٌ عِينٌ ۝٢٢

    Qaraiand big-eyed houris

23. 56:23

    كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ۝٢٣

    Qarailike guarded pearls,

24. 56:24

    جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ۝٢٤

    Qaraia reward for what they used to do.

25. 56:25

    لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا ۝٢٥

    QaraiThey will not hear therein any vain talk or sinful speech,

26. 56:26

    إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَٰمًا سَلَٰمًا ۝٢٦

    Qaraibut only the watchword, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’

27. 56:27

    وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٢٧

    QaraiAnd the People of the Right Hand—what are the People of the Right Hand?!

28. 56:28

    فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ ۝٢٨

    QaraiAmid thornless lote trees

29. 56:29

    وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ ۝٢٩

    Qaraiand clustered spathes

30. 56:30

    وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ ۝٣٠

    Qaraiand extended shade,

31. 56:31

    وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ ۝٣١

    Qaraiand ever-flowing water

32. 56:32

    وَفَٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ ۝٣٢

    Qaraiand abundant fruits,

33. 56:33

    لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ ۝٣٣

    Qaraineither inaccessible, nor forbidden,

34. 56:34

    وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ ۝٣٤

    Qaraiand noble spouses.

35. 56:35

    إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً ۝٣٥

    QaraiWe have created them with a special creation,

36. 56:36

    فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا ۝٣٦

    Qaraiand made them virgins,

37. 56:37

    عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا ۝٣٧

    Qarailoving, of a like age,

38. 56:38

    لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٣٨

    Qaraifor the People of the Right Hand.

39. 56:39

    ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ۝٣٩

    QaraiA multitude from the former [generations]

40. 56:40

    وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلَْٔاخِرِينَ ۝٤٠

    Qaraiand a multitude from the latter [ones].

41. 56:41

    وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١

    QaraiAnd the People of the Left Hand—what are the People of the Left Hand?!

42. 56:42

    فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ ۝٤٢

    QaraiAmid infernal miasma and boiling water

43. 56:43

    وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ ۝٤٣

    Qaraiand the shadow of a dense black smoke,

44. 56:44

    لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ۝٤٤

    Qaraineither cool nor beneficial.

45. 56:45

    إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ۝٤٥

    QaraiIndeed they had been affluent before this,

46. 56:46

    وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٤٦

    Qaraiand they used to persist in the great sin.

47. 56:47

    وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧

    QaraiAnd they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?!

48. 56:48

    أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨

    QaraiAnd our forefathers too?!’

49. 56:49

    قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلَْٔاخِرِينَ ۝٤٩

    QaraiSay, ‘Indeed the former and latter generations

50. 56:50

    لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ ۝٥٠

    Qaraiwill all be gathered for the tryst of a known day.

51. 56:51

    ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١

    QaraiThen indeed, you, astray deniers,

52. 56:52

    لََٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ ۝٥٢

    Qaraiwill surely eat from the Zaqqum tree

53. 56:53

    فَمَالُِٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ ۝٥٣

    Qaraiand stuff your bellies with it,

54. 56:54

    فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ۝٥٤

    Qaraiand drink boiling water on top of it,

55. 56:55

    فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ ۝٥٥

    Qaraidrinking like thirsty camels.’

56. 56:56

    هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ۝٥٦

    QaraiSuch will be the hospitality they receive on the Day of Retribution.

57. 56:57

    نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ۝٥٧

    QaraiWe created you. Then why do you not acknowledge it?

58. 56:58

    أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ۝٥٨

    QaraiHave you considered the sperm that you emit?

59. 56:59

    ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ ۝٥٩

    QaraiIs it you who create it, or are We the creator?

60. 56:60

    نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ۝٦٠

    QaraiWe have ordained death among you, and We are not to be outmaneuvered

61. 56:61

    عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ۝٦١

    Qaraifrom replacing you with your likes and recreating you in [a realm] you do not know.

62. 56:62

    وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٢

    QaraiCertainly you have known the first genesis, then why do you not take admonition?

63. 56:63

    أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ۝٦٣

    QaraiHave you considered what you sow?

64. 56:64

    ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ ۝٦٤

    QaraiIs it you who make it grow, or are We the grower?

65. 56:65

    لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ ۝٦٥

    QaraiIf We wish, We turn it into chaff, whereat you are left stunned [saying to yourselves,]

66. 56:66

    إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ ۝٦٦

    Qarai‘Indeed we have suffered loss!

67. 56:67

    بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ۝٦٧

    QaraiNo, we are deprived!’

68. 56:68

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ۝٦٨

    QaraiHave you considered the water that you drink?

69. 56:69

    ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ ۝٦٩

    QaraiIs it you who bring it down from the rain cloud, or is it We who bring [it] down?

70. 56:70

    لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ ۝٧٠

    QaraiIf We wish We can make it bitter. Then why do you not give thanks?

71. 56:71

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ۝٧١

    QaraiHave you considered the fire that you kindle?

72. 56:72

    ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشُِٔونَ ۝٧٢

    QaraiWas it you who caused its tree to grow, or were We the grower?

73. 56:73

    نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ ۝٧٣

    QaraiIt was We who made it a reminder and a boon for the desert-dwellers.

74. 56:74

    فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٧٤

    QaraiSo celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme.

75. 56:75

    ۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٧٥

    QaraiI swear by the places where the stars set!

76. 56:76

    وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ۝٧٦

    QaraiAnd indeed it is a great oath, should you know.

77. 56:77

    إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ ۝٧٧

    QaraiThis is indeed a noble Quran,

78. 56:78

    فِى كِتَٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ ۝٧٨

    Qaraiin a guarded Book

79. 56:79

    لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ ۝٧٩

    Qarai—no one touches it except the pure ones—

80. 56:80

    تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ۝٨٠

    Qaraisent down gradually from the Lord of all the worlds.

81. 56:81

    أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ ۝٨١

    QaraiWhat! Do you take lightly this discourse?

82. 56:82

    وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٨٢

    QaraiAnd make your denial of it your vocation?

83. 56:83

    فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ ۝٨٣

    QaraiSo when it reaches the throat [of the dying person],

84. 56:84

    وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ ۝٨٤

    Qaraiand at that moment you are looking on [at his bedside]

85. 56:85

    وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ ۝٨٥

    Qarai—and We are nearer to him than you are, though you do not perceive—

86. 56:86

    فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ ۝٨٦

    Qaraithen why do you not restore it, if you are not subject

87. 56:87

    تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ ۝٨٧

    Qarai[to Divine dispensation], if you are truthful?

88. 56:88

    فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ ۝٨٨

    QaraiThen, if he be of those brought near,

89. 56:89

    فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ ۝٨٩

    Qaraithen ease, abundance, and a garden of bliss.

90. 56:90

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٩٠

    QaraiAnd if he be of the People of the Right Hand,

91. 56:91

    فَسَلَٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٩١

    Qaraithen [he will be told,] ‘Peace be on you, from the People of the Right Hand!’

92. 56:92

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ۝٩٢

    QaraiBut if he be of the impugners, the astray ones,

93. 56:93

    فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ ۝٩٣

    Qaraithen a treat of boiling water

94. 56:94

    وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ ۝٩٤

    Qaraiand entry into hell.

95. 56:95

    إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ ۝٩٥

    QaraiIndeed this is certain truth.

96. 56:96

    فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٩٦

    QaraiSo celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme!
