An-Najm · The Star

62 verses · Revealed in Makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 53:1

   وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ۝١

   QaraiBy the star when it sets:

2. 53:2

   مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ ۝٢

   Qaraiyour companion has neither gone astray, nor amiss.

3. 53:3

   وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ ۝٣

   QaraiNor does he speak out of [his own] desire:

4. 53:4

   إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ ۝٤

   Qaraiit is just a revelation that is revealed [to him],

5. 53:5

   عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ ۝٥

   Qaraitaught him by one of great powers,

6. 53:6

   ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ ۝٦

   Qaraipossessed of sound judgement. He settled,

7. 53:7

   وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ۝٧

   Qaraiwhile he was on the highest horizon.

8. 53:8

   ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ۝٨

   QaraiThen he drew nearer and nearer

9. 53:9

   فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ ۝٩

   Qaraiuntil he was within two bows’ length or even nearer,

10. 53:10

    فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ ۝١٠

    Qaraiwhereat He revealed to His servant whatever He revealed.

11. 53:11

    مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ ۝١١

    QaraiThe heart did not deny what it saw.

12. 53:12

    أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ ۝١٢

    QaraiWill you then dispute with him about what he saw?!

13. 53:13

    وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ ۝١٣

    QaraiCertainly he saw it yet another time,

14. 53:14

    عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ ۝١٤

    Qaraiby the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary,

15. 53:15

    عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ ۝١٥

    Qarainear which is the Garden of the Abode,

16. 53:16

    إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ ۝١٦

    Qaraiwhen there covered the Lote Tree what covered it.

17. 53:17

    مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ ۝١٧

    QaraiHis gaze did not swerve, nor did it overstep the bounds.

18. 53:18

    لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ ۝١٨

    QaraiCertainly he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.

19. 53:19

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ ۝١٩

    QaraiHave you considered Lat and ‘Uzza?

20. 53:20

    وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ ۝٢٠

    Qaraiand Manat, the third one?

21. 53:21

    أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ ۝٢١

    QaraiAre you to have males and He females?

22. 53:22

    تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ ۝٢٢

    QaraiThat, then, will be an unfair division!

23. 53:23

    إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ۝٢٣

    QaraiThese are but names, which you have coined—you and your fathers—for which Allah has not sent down any authority. They follow nothing but conjectures and the desires of the [lower] soul, while there has already come to them the guidance from their Lord.

24. 53:24

    أَمْ لِلْإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ ۝٢٤

    QaraiShall man have whatever he yearns for?

25. 53:25

    فَلِلَّهِ ٱلَْٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ۝٢٥

    QaraiYet to Allah belong this world and the Hereafter.

26. 53:26

    ۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَٰعَتُهُمْ شَئًْا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ ۝٢٦

    QaraiHow many an angel there is in the heavens whose intercession is of not any avail, except after Allah permits whomever He wishes and approves of!

27. 53:27

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلَْٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ ۝٢٧

    QaraiIndeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter give female names to the angels.

28. 53:28

    وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَئًْا ۝٢٨

    QaraiThey do not have any knowledge of that. They follow nothing but conjectures, and conjecture is no substitute for the truth.

29. 53:29

    فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۝٢٩

    QaraiSo avoid those who turn away from Our remembrance and desire nothing but the life of the world.

30. 53:30

    ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ ۝٣٠

    QaraiThat is the ultimate reach of their knowledge. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are [rightly] guided.

31. 53:31

    وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَُٰٓٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى ۝٣١

    QaraiTo Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil for what they have done, and reward those who do good with the best [of rewards].

32. 53:32

    ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ ۝٣٢

    QaraiThose who avoid major sins and indecencies, apart from [minor and occasional] lapses. Indeed your Lord is expansive in [His] forgiveness. He knows you best since [the time] He produced you from the earth and since you were foetuses in the bellies of your mothers. So do not flaunt your piety: He knows best those who are Godwary.

33. 53:33

    أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ ۝٣٣

    QaraiDid you see him who turned away,

34. 53:34

    وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ ۝٣٤

    Qaraigave a little and held off?

35. 53:35

    أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ ۝٣٥

    QaraiDoes he have the knowledge of the Unseen so that he sees?

36. 53:36

    أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ ۝٣٦

    QaraiHas he not been informed of what is in the scriptures of Moses,

37. 53:37

    وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ ۝٣٧

    Qaraiand of Abraham, who fulfilled [his summons]:

38. 53:38

    أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ ۝٣٨

    Qaraithat no bearer shall bear another’s burden,

39. 53:39

    وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ ۝٣٩

    Qaraithat nothing belongs to man except what he strives for,

40. 53:40

    وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ ۝٤٠

    Qaraiand that he will soon be shown his endeavour,

41. 53:41

    ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ ۝٤١

    Qaraithen he will be rewarded for it with the fullest reward;

42. 53:42

    وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ ۝٤٢

    Qaraithat the terminus is toward your Lord,

43. 53:43

    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ ۝٤٣

    Qaraithat it is He who makes [men] laugh, and weep,

44. 53:44

    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا ۝٤٤

    Qaraithat it is He who brings death and gives life,

45. 53:45

    وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ ۝٤٥

    Qaraithat it is He who created the mates, the male and the female,

46. 53:46

    مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ ۝٤٦

    Qaraifrom a drop of [seminal] fluid when emitted;

47. 53:47

    وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ ۝٤٧

    Qaraithat with Him lies the second genesis,

48. 53:48

    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ ۝٤٨

    Qaraithat it is He who enriches and grants possessions,

49. 53:49

    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ ۝٤٩

    Qaraithat it is He who is the Lord of Sirius;

50. 53:50

    وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۝٥٠

    Qaraithat it is He who destroyed the former ‘Ad,

51. 53:51

    وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ ۝٥١

    Qaraiand Thamud, sparing none [of them];

52. 53:52

    وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ ۝٥٢

    Qaraiand the people of Noah before that; indeed they were more unjust and rebellious;

53. 53:53

    وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ ۝٥٣

    Qaraiand He overthrew the town that was overturned,

54. 53:54

    فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ ۝٥٤

    Qaraicovering it with what covered it.

55. 53:55

    فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ ۝٥٥

    QaraiThen which of the bounties of your Lord will you dispute?

56. 53:56

    هَٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ ۝٥٦

    QaraiThis is a warner, [in the tradition] of the warners of old.

57. 53:57

    أَزِفَتِ ٱلَْٔازِفَةُ ۝٥٧

    QaraiThe Imminent [Hour] is near at hand.

58. 53:58

    لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ ۝٥٨

    QaraiThere is none who may unveil it besides Allah.

59. 53:59

    أَفَمِنْ هَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ ۝٥٩

    QaraiWill you then wonder at this discourse,

60. 53:60

    وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ ۝٦٠

    Qaraiand laugh and not weep,

61. 53:61

    وَأَنتُمْ سَٰمِدُونَ ۝٦١

    Qaraiwhile you remain heedless?!

62. 53:62

    فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩ ۝٦٢

    QaraiSo prostrate yourselves to Allah and worship Him!
