Al-Jinn · The Jinn
28 verses · Revealed in Makkah
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
72:1
قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًا ١
Qul oohiya ilayya annahu istamaAAanafarun mina aljinni faqaloo inna samiAAnaqur-anan AAajaba
QaraiSay, ‘It has been revealed to me that a team of the jinn listened [to the Quran] and they said, “Indeed we heard a wonderful Quran,
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

72:2
يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فََٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًا ٢
Yahdee ila arrushdi faamannabihi walan nushrika birabbina ahada
Qaraiwhich guides to rectitude. Hence, we have believed in it and we will never ascribe any partner to our Lord.
Saheeh InternationalIt guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
-
72:3
وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَٰحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا ٣
Waannahu taAAala jaddu rabbinama ittakhatha sahibatan wala walada
QaraiExalted be the majesty of our Lord; He has taken neither any spouse nor son.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
-
72:4
وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطًا ٤
Waannahu kana yaqoolu safeehunaAAala Allahi shatata
QaraiThe foolish ones among us used to speak atrocious lies concerning Allah.
Saheeh InternationalAnd that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees] has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.
-
72:5
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا ٥
Waanna thanannaan lan taqoola al-insu waljinnu AAala Allahikathiba
QaraiWe thought that humans and jinn would never utter any falsehood concerning Allah.
Saheeh InternationalAnd we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.
-
72:6
وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا ٦
Waannahu kana rijalun minaal-insi yaAAoothoona birijalin mina aljinni fazadoohumrahaqa
QaraiIndeed some persons from the humans would seek the protection of some persons from the jinn, thus only adding to their rebellion.
Saheeh InternationalAnd there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].
-
72:7
وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدًا ٧
Waannahum thannoo kama thanantuman lan yabAAatha Allahu ahada
QaraiThey thought, just as you think, that Allah will not raise anyone from the dead.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].
-
72:8
وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا ٨
Waanna lamasna assamaafawajadnaha muli-at harasan shadeedanwashuhuba
QaraiIndeed we made for the heaven and found it full of mighty sentries and flames.
Saheeh InternationalAnd we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
-
72:9
وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَٰعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلَْٔانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا ٩
Waanna kunna naqAAudu minhamaqaAAida lissamAAi faman yastamiAAi al-anayajid lahu shihaban rasada
QaraiWe used to sit in its positions to eavesdrop, but anyone listening now finds a flame waiting for him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
-
72:10
وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا ١٠
Waanna la nadree asharrunoreeda biman fee al-ardi am arada bihim rabbuhumrashada
QaraiWe do not know whether ill is intended for those who are on the earth, or whether their Lord intends good for them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
-
72:11
وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًا ١١
Waanna minna assalihoonawaminna doona thalika kunna tara-iqaqidada
QaraiAmong us some are righteous and some are otherwise: we are various sects.
Saheeh InternationalAnd among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.
-
72:12
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًا ١٢
Wanna thanannaan lan nuAAjiza Allaha fee al-ardi walan nuAAjizahuharaba
QaraiWe know that we cannot frustrate Allah on the earth, nor can we frustrate Him by fleeing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.
-
72:13
وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا ١٣
Waanna lamma samiAAnaalhuda amanna bihi faman yu/min birabbihifala yakhafu bakhsan wala rahaqa
QaraiWhen we heard the [message of] guidance, we believed in it. Whoever that has faith in his Lord will fear neither privation nor oppression.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.
-
72:14
وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلْقَٰسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا۟ رَشَدًا ١٤
Waanna minna almuslimoonawaminna alqasitoona faman aslama faola-ikataharraw rashada
QaraiAmong us some are Muslims and some of us are perverse.” ’ Those who submit [to Allah]—it is they who pursue rectitude.
Saheeh InternationalAnd among us are Muslims [in submission to Allāh], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.
-
72:15
وَأَمَّا ٱلْقَٰسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا۟ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا ١٥
Waama alqasitoona fakanoolijahannama hataba
QaraiAs for the perverse, they will be firewood for hell.
Saheeh InternationalBut as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'
-
72:16
وَأَلَّوِ ٱسْتَقَٰمُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَٰهُم مَّآءً غَدَقًا ١٦
Waallawi istaqamoo AAala attareeqatilaasqaynahum maan ghadaqa
QaraiIf they are steadfast on the path [of Allah], We shall provide them with abundant water,
Saheeh InternationalAnd [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision]
-
72:17
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا ١٧
Linaftinahum feehi waman yuAArid AAanthikri rabbihi yasluk-hu AAathaban saAAada
Qaraiso that We may test them therein, and whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will let him into an escalating punishment.
Saheeh InternationalSo We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment.
-
72:18
وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدًا ١٨
Waanna almasajida lillahi falatadAAoo maAAa Allahi ahada
QaraiThe places of worship belong to Allah, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allāh, so do not invoke with Allāh anyone.
-
72:19
وَأَنَّهُۥ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا۟ يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا ١٩
Waannahu lamma qama AAabdu AllahiyadAAoohu kadoo yakoonoona AAalayhi libada
QaraiWhen the servant of Allah rose to pray to Him, they almost crowded around him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd that when the Servant [i.e., Prophet] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."
-
72:20
قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى وَلَآ أُشْرِكُ بِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا ٢٠
Qul innama adAAoo rabbee walaoshriku bihi ahada
QaraiSay, ‘I pray only to my Lord, and I do not ascribe any partner to Him.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."
-
72:21
قُلْ إِنِّى لَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا ٢١
Qul innee la amliku lakum darranwala rashada
QaraiSay, ‘I have no power to bring you any harm or good [of my own accord].’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."
-
72:22
قُلْ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا ٢٢
Qul innee lan yujeeranee mina Allahiahadun walan ajida min doonihi multahada
QaraiSay, ‘Neither can anyone shelter me from Allah, nor can I find any refuge besides Him.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.
-
72:23
إِلَّا بَلَٰغًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَٰلَٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَعْصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ٢٣
Illa balaghan mina Allahiwarisalatihi waman yaAAsi Allahawarasoolahu fa-inna lahu nara jahannama khalideenafeeha abada
Qarai[I have no duty] except to transmit from Allah, and [to communicate] His messages; and whoever disobeys Allah and His apostle, there will indeed be for him the fire of hell, to remain in it forever.’
Saheeh InternationalBut [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.

72:24
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا ٢٤
Hatta itha raaw mayooAAadoona fasayaAAlamoona man adAAafu nasiranwaaqallu AAadada
QaraiWhen they see what they are promised, they will know who is weaker in supporters and fewer in numbers.
Saheeh International[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.

72:25
قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَمَدًا ٢٥
Qul in adree aqareebun ma tooAAadoonaam yajAAalu lahu rabbee amada
QaraiSay, ‘I do not know if what you are promised is near, or if my Lord has set a [long] term for it.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."
-
72:26
عَٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا ٢٦
AAalimu alghaybi fala yuthhiruAAala ghaybihi ahada
QaraiKnower of the Unseen, He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] Unseen to anyone,
Saheeh International[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone
-
72:27
إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَسْلُكُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِۦ رَصَدًا ٢٧
Illa mani irtada min rasoolinfa-innahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wamin khalfihi rasada
Qaraiexcept to an apostle He approves of. Then He dispatches a sentinel before and behind him
Saheeh InternationalExcept whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him [i.e., each messenger] and behind him observers
-
72:28
لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَٰلَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا ٢٨
LiyaAAlama an qad ablaghoo risalatirabbihim waahata bima ladayhim waahsa kullashay-in AAadada
Qaraiso that He may ascertain that they have communicated the messages of their Lord, and He encompasses all that is with them, and He keeps an count of all things.
Saheeh InternationalThat he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
