Al-Muddaththir · The Cloaked One

56 verses · Revealed in Makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 74:1

   يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ ۝١

   QaraiO you wrapped up in your mantle!

2. 74:2

   قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ ۝٢

   QaraiRise up and warn!

3. 74:3

   وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ۝٣

   QaraiMagnify your Lord,

4. 74:4

   وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ۝٤

   Qaraiand purify your clothes,

5. 74:5

   وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ ۝٥

   Qaraiand keep away from all impurity!

6. 74:6

   وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ ۝٦

   QaraiDo not grant a favour seeking a greater gain,

7. 74:7

   وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ ۝٧

   Qaraiand be patient for the sake of your Lord.

8. 74:8

   فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ ۝٨

   QaraiWhen the Trumpet will be sounded,

9. 74:9

   فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ ۝٩

   Qaraithat will be a day of hardship,

10. 74:10

    عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ ۝١٠

    Qarainot at all easy for the faithless.

11. 74:11

    ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا ۝١١

    QaraiLeave Me [to deal] with him whom I created alone,

12. 74:12

    وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا ۝١٢

    Qaraiand furnished him with extensive means,

13. 74:13

    وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا ۝١٣

    Qarai[gave him] sons to be at his side,

14. 74:14

    وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا ۝١٤

    Qaraiand facilitated [all matters] for him.

15. 74:15

    ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ ۝١٥

    QaraiStill he is eager that I should give him more.

16. 74:16

    كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَِٔايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا ۝١٦

    QaraiNo indeed! He is an obstinate opponent of Our signs.

17. 74:17

    سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ۝١٧

    QaraiSoon I will overwhelm him with hardship.

18. 74:18

    إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ۝١٨

    QaraiIndeed he reflected and decided.

19. 74:19

    فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ۝١٩

    QaraiPerish he, how he decided!

20. 74:20

    ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ۝٢٠

    QaraiAgain, perish he, how he decided!

21. 74:21

    ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ۝٢١

    QaraiThen he looked;

22. 74:22

    ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ۝٢٢

    Qaraithen frowned and scowled.

23. 74:23

    ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ ۝٢٣

    QaraiThen he walked away disdainfully,

24. 74:24

    فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ ۝٢٤

    Qaraisaying, ‘It is nothing but traditional sorcery.

25. 74:25

    إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ ۝٢٥

    QaraiIt is nothing but the speech of a human.’

26. 74:26

    سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

    QaraiSoon I will cast him into Saqar.

27. 74:27

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

    QaraiAnd what will show you what is Saqar?

28. 74:28

    لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

    QaraiIt neither spares, nor leaves [anything].

29. 74:29

    لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

    QaraiIt burns the skin.

30. 74:30

    عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

    QaraiThere are nineteen [keepers] over it.

31. 74:31

    وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ ۝٣١

    QaraiWe have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and so that those who were given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and so that those who were given the Book and the faithful may not be in doubt, and so that the faithless and those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, ‘What did Allah mean by this description?’ Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans.

32. 74:32

    كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ ۝٣٢

    QaraiNo indeed! By the Moon!

33. 74:33

    وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ ۝٣٣

    QaraiBy the night when it recedes!

34. 74:34

    وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ ۝٣٤

    QaraiBy the dawn when it brightens!

35. 74:35

    إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ ۝٣٥

    QaraiIndeed they are one of the greatest [signs of God]

36. 74:36

    نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ ۝٣٦

    Qarai—a warner to all humans,

37. 74:37

    لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ ۝٣٧

    Qarai[alike] for those of you who like to advance ahead and those who would remain behind.

38. 74:38

    كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ ۝٣٨

    QaraiEvery soul is hostage to what it has earned,

39. 74:39

    إِلَّآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٣٩

    Qaraiexcept the People of the Right Hand.

40. 74:40

    فِى جَنَّٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ۝٤٠

    Qarai[They will be] in gardens, questioning

41. 74:41

    عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ۝٤١

    Qaraithe guilty:

42. 74:42

    مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ ۝٤٢

    Qarai‘What drew you into Hell?’

43. 74:43

    قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ ۝٤٣

    QaraiThey will answer, ‘We were not among those who prayed.

44. 74:44

    وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ ۝٤٤

    QaraiNor did we feed the poor.

45. 74:45

    وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ ۝٤٥

    QaraiWe used to indulge in [profane] gossip along with the gossipers,

46. 74:46

    وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ۝٤٦

    Qaraiand we used to deny the Day of Retribution

47. 74:47

    حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ ۝٤٧

    Qaraiuntil death came to us.’

48. 74:48

    فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ ۝٤٨

    QaraiSo the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them.

49. 74:49

    فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ ۝٤٩

    QaraiWhat is the matter with them that they evade the Reminder

50. 74:50

    كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ ۝٥٠

    Qaraias if they were terrified asses

51. 74:51

    فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ ۝٥١

    Qaraifleeing from a lion?

52. 74:52

    بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً ۝٥٢

    QaraiBut everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures [from Allah]!

53. 74:53

    كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلَْٔاخِرَةَ ۝٥٣

    QaraiNo! Indeed, they do not fear the Hereafter.

54. 74:54

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۝٥٤

    QaraiNo! It is indeed a reminder.

55. 74:55

    فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ۝٥٥

    QaraiSo let anyone who wishes be mindful of it.

56. 74:56

    وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۝٥٦

    QaraiAnd they will not be mindful unless Allah wishes. He is worthy of [your] being wary [of Him] and He is worthy to forgive.
