عبس
'Abasa · He Frowned
42 verses · Revealed in Makkah
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
80:1
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ١
AAabasa watawalla
QaraiHe frowned and turned away
Saheeh InternationalHe [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away
-
80:2
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ ٢
An jaahu al-aAAma
Qaraiwhen the blind man approached him.
Saheeh InternationalBecause there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
-
80:3
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ٣
Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka
QaraiAnd how do you know, maybe he would purify himself,
Saheeh InternationalBut what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified
-
80:4
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ ٤
Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra
Qaraior take admonition, and the admonition would benefit him!
Saheeh InternationalOr be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
-
80:5
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ٥
Amma mani istaghna
QaraiBut as for someone who is wealthy,
Saheeh InternationalAs for he who thinks himself without need,
-
80:6
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ٦
Faanta lahu tasadda
Qaraiyou attend to him,
Saheeh InternationalTo him you give attention.
-
80:7
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧
Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka
Qaraithough you are not liable if he does not purify himself.
Saheeh InternationalAnd not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
-
80:8
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ٨
Waamma man jaaka yasAAa
QaraiBut as for someone who comes hurrying to you,
Saheeh InternationalBut as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
-
80:9
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ٩
Wahuwa yakhsha
Qaraiwhile he fears [Allah],
Saheeh InternationalWhile he fears [Allāh],
-
80:10
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ١٠
Faanta AAanhu talahha
Qaraiyou are neglectful of him.
Saheeh InternationalFrom him you are distracted.
-
80:11
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ١١
Kalla innaha tathkira
QaraiNo indeed! These [verses of the Quran ] are a reminder
Saheeh InternationalNo! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;
-
80:12
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ١٢
Faman shaa thakarah
Qarai—so let anyone who wishes remember—
Saheeh InternationalSo whoever wills may remember it.
-
80:13
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ١٣
Fee suhufin mukarrama
Qaraiin honoured scriptures,
Saheeh International[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
-
80:14
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ ١٤
MarfooAAatin mutahhara
Qaraiexalted and purified,
Saheeh InternationalExalted and purified,
-
80:15
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ ١٥
Bi-aydee safara
Qaraiin the hands of envoys,
Saheeh International[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
-
80:16
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ ١٦
Kiramin barara
Qarainoble and pious.
Saheeh InternationalNoble and dutiful.
-
80:17
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ ١٧
Qutila al-insanu ma akfarah
QaraiPerish man! How ungrateful is he!
Saheeh InternationalDestroyed [i.e., cursed] is man; how disbelieving is he.
-
80:18
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ١٨
Min ayyi shay-in khalaqah
QaraiFrom what did He create him?
Saheeh InternationalFrom what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?
-
80:19
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ١٩
Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah
QaraiHe created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid; then proportioned him.
Saheeh InternationalFrom a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
-
80:20
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ٢٠
Thumma assabeela yassarah
QaraiThen He made the way easy for him;
Saheeh InternationalThen He eased the way for him;
-
80:21
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ ٢١
Thumma amatahu faaqbarah
Qaraithen He made him die and buried him;
Saheeh InternationalThen He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
-
80:22
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ٢٢
Thumma itha shaa ansharah
Qaraiand then, when He wished, resurrected him.
Saheeh InternationalThen when He wills, He will resurrect him.
-
80:23
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ٢٣
Kalla lamma yaqdi maamarah
QaraiNo indeed! He has not yet carried out what He has commanded him.
Saheeh InternationalNo! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
-
80:24
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ٢٤
Falyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamih
QaraiLet man consider his food:
Saheeh InternationalThen let mankind look at his food -
-
80:25
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا ٢٥
Anna sababna almaasabba
QaraiWe pour down plenteous water [from the sky],
Saheeh InternationalHow We poured down water in torrents,
-
80:26
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا ٢٦
Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqa
Qaraithen We split the earth making fissures in it
Saheeh InternationalThen We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
-
80:27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا ٢٧
Faanbatna feeha habba
Qaraiand make the grain grow in it,
Saheeh InternationalAnd caused to grow within it grain
-
80:28
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا ٢٨
WaAAinaban waqadba
Qaraias well as vines and vegetables,
Saheeh InternationalAnd grapes and herbage
-
80:29
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا ٢٩
Wazaytoonan wanakhla
Qaraiolives and date palms,
Saheeh InternationalAnd olive and palm trees
-
80:30
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا ٣٠
Wahada-iqa ghulba
Qaraiand densely-planted gardens,
Saheeh InternationalAnd gardens of dense shrubbery
-
80:31
وَفَٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا ٣١
Wafakihatan waabba
Qaraifruits and pastures,
Saheeh InternationalAnd fruit and grass -
-
80:32
مَّتَٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ ٣٢
MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum
Qaraias a sustenance for you and your livestock.
Saheeh International[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
-
80:33
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ٣٣
Fa-itha jaati assakhkha
QaraiSo when the deafening Cry comes—
Saheeh InternationalBut when there comes the Deafening Blast
-
80:34
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ ٣٤
Yawma yafirru almaro min akheeh
Qaraithe day when a man will evade his brother,
Saheeh InternationalOn the Day a man will flee from his brother
-
80:35
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ٣٥
Waommihi waabeeh
Qaraihis mother and his father,
Saheeh InternationalAnd his mother and his father
-
80:36
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ٣٦
Wasahibatihi wabaneeh
Qaraihis spouse and his sons—
Saheeh InternationalAnd his wife and his children,
-
80:37
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ ٣٧
Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha/nun yughneeh
Qaraieach of them will have a task to keep him preoccupied on that day.
Saheeh InternationalFor every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
-
80:38
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ ٣٨
Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfira
QaraiSome faces will be bright on that day,
Saheeh International[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
-
80:39
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ٣٩
Dahikatun mustabshira
Qarailaughing and joyous,
Saheeh InternationalLaughing, rejoicing at good news.
-
80:40
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ٤٠
Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabara
Qaraiand some faces on that day will be covered with dust,
Saheeh InternationalAnd [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
-
80:41
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ٤١
Tarhaquha qatara
Qaraiovercast with gloom.
Saheeh InternationalBlackness will cover them.
-
80:42
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ ٤٢
Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajara
QaraiIt is they who are the faithless, the vicious.
Saheeh InternationalThose are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
