Al-Balad · The City

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 90:1

   لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ۝١

   QaraiI swear by this town,

2. 90:2

   وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ۝٢

   Qaraias you reside in this town;

3. 90:3

   وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ۝٣

   Qarai[and] by the father and him whom he begot:

4. 90:4

   لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ۝٤

   Qaraicertainly We created man in travail.

5. 90:5

   أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ۝٥

   QaraiDoes he suppose that no one will ever have power over him?

6. 90:6

   يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ۝٦

   QaraiHe says, ‘I have squandered immense wealth.’

7. 90:7

   أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ۝٧

   QaraiDoes he suppose that no one sees him?

8. 90:8

   أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ۝٨

   QaraiHave We not made for him two eyes,

9. 90:9

   وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ۝٩

   Qaraia tongue, and two lips,

10. 90:10

    وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ۝١٠

    Qaraiand shown him the two paths [of good and evil]?

11. 90:11

    فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ۝١١

    QaraiYet he has not embarked upon the uphill task.

12. 90:12

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ۝١٢

    QaraiAnd what will show you what is the uphill task?

13. 90:13

    فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ۝١٣

    Qarai[It is] the freeing of a slave,

14. 90:14

    أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ۝١٤

    Qaraior feeding, during days of [general] starvation,

15. 90:15

    يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ۝١٥

    Qaraian orphan among relatives

16. 90:16

    أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ۝١٦

    Qaraior a needy man in desolation,

17. 90:17

    ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ۝١٧

    Qaraiwhile being one of those who have faith and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to compassion.

18. 90:18

    أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ۝١٨

    QaraiThey are the People of the Right Hand.

19. 90:19

    وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بَِٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشَْٔمَةِ ۝١٩

    QaraiBut those who defy Our signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.

20. 90:20

    عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ۝٢٠

    QaraiA closed Fire will be [imposed] upon them.
