البلد
Al-Balad · The City
20 verses · Revealed in Makkah
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
90:1
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ١
La oqsimu bihatha albalad
QaraiI swear by this town,
Saheeh InternationalI swear by this city [i.e., Makkah] –
-
90:2
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ٢
Waanta hillun bihatha albalad
Qaraias you reside in this town;
Saheeh InternationalAnd you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city –
-
90:3
وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ٣
Wawalidin wama walad
Qarai[and] by the father and him whom he begot:
Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
-
90:4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ٤
Laqad khalaqna al-insana feekabad
Qaraicertainly We created man in travail.
Saheeh InternationalWe have certainly created man into hardship.
-
90:5
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ٥
Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahad
QaraiDoes he suppose that no one will ever have power over him?
Saheeh InternationalDoes he think that never will anyone overcome him?
-
90:6
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ٦
Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada
QaraiHe says, ‘I have squandered immense wealth.’
Saheeh InternationalHe says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
-
90:7
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ٧
Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahad
QaraiDoes he suppose that no one sees him?
Saheeh InternationalDoes he think that no one has seen him?
-
90:8
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ٨
Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn
QaraiHave We not made for him two eyes,
Saheeh InternationalHave We not made for him two eyes?
-
90:9
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ٩
Walisanan washafatayn
Qaraia tongue, and two lips,
Saheeh InternationalAnd a tongue and two lips?
-
90:10
وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ١٠
Wahadaynahu annajdayn
Qaraiand shown him the two paths [of good and evil]?
Saheeh InternationalAnd have shown him the two ways?
-
90:11
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ١١
Fala iqtahama alAAaqaba
QaraiYet he has not embarked upon the uphill task.
Saheeh InternationalBut he has not broken through the difficult pass.
-
90:12
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ١٢
Wama adraka maalAAaqaba
QaraiAnd what will show you what is the uphill task?
Saheeh InternationalAnd what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
-
90:13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ١٣
Fakku raqaba
Qarai[It is] the freeing of a slave,
Saheeh InternationalIt is the freeing of a slave
-
90:14
أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ١٤
Aw itAAamun fee yawmin theemasghaba
Qaraior feeding, during days of [general] starvation,
Saheeh InternationalOr feeding on a day of severe hunger
-
90:15
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ١٥
Yateeman tha maqraba
Qaraian orphan among relatives
Saheeh InternationalAn orphan of near relationship
-
90:16
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ١٦
Aw miskeenan tha matraba
Qaraior a needy man in desolation,
Saheeh InternationalOr a needy person in misery
-
90:17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ١٧
Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoowatawasaw bissabri watawasaw bilmarhama
Qaraiwhile being one of those who have faith and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to compassion.
Saheeh InternationalAnd then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
-
90:18
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ١٨
Ola-ika as-habualmaymana
QaraiThey are the People of the Right Hand.
Saheeh InternationalThose are the companions of the right.
-
90:19
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بَِٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشَْٔمَةِ ١٩
Wallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatinahum as-habu almash-ama
QaraiBut those who defy Our signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.
Saheeh InternationalBut they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
-
90:20
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ٢٠
AAalayhim narun mu/sada
QaraiA closed Fire will be [imposed] upon them.
Saheeh InternationalOver them will be fire closed in.
